시의 배경
시의 시선은
하나님에서 이스라엘 그리고 만 백성으로 옮겨 가고 있습니다.
노래와 찬양이라는 단어의 반복은 하나님의 왕으로 인정함의 고백입니다.
또, 이스라엘을 통한 만 백성의 구원의 선교 사명을 노래로 다짐한다고 할 수 있습니다.
시의 내용
1. 하나님의 이름을 찬양(v1~2)
[1~2] (고라의 아들들을 위해 악장에게 준 시) 오 너희 만백성아, 손뼉을 치고 승리의 목소리로 [하나님]께 외칠지어다.
지극히 높으신 {주}께서는 두려우시며 온 땅을 다스리는 위대한 [왕]이시로다.
만백성은 누구인가?
“그분께서 백성들을 우리 밑에(4절)”
“우리를 위하여(5절)”
“[하나님]은 온 땅의 [왕]이시니(7절)”
“[하나님]께서 이교도들을 통치하시며(8절)”
“백성의 통치자들이 함께 모였으니(9절)”
이런 구절들을 종합해 볼 때, 이스라엘을 포함한 온 세상의 백성을 의미한다고 볼 수 있습니다.
하나님의 이름
“지극히 높으신””
“엘론” 하나님께서 가장 높고, 위대하시며, 전능한 분이심을 나타내는 이름입니다.
이 이름은 종종 하나님의 주권과 높고 뛰어난 위엄을 강조할 때 사용됩니다.
“주”
“야훼”는 하나님의 이름, “스스로 존재하는 자” 또는 “나는 그가 존재하는 자”라는 뜻입니다.
이 이름은 하나님의 절대적인 존재와 자주성, 영원성을 강조합니다.
“위대한 왕”
“위대한 왕”을 히브리어로 표현은 “메레크 가돌”입니다. (Melekh Gadol)**입니다.
이 표현은 하나님의 위대함과 주권적인 통치를 강조하는 데 사용됩니다.
하나님이 모든 것을 다스리시는 위대한 왕이심을 나타냅니다.
이스라엘을 선교의 도구로 택하심(v2~3)
[3~4절] 그분께서 백성들을 우리 밑에, 민족들을 우리 발밑에 복종하게 하시며
우리를 위하여 우리의 상속 재산을 택하시리니 곧 그분께서 사랑하신 야곱의 영화로다 셀라”.
“우리는” 누구인가?
“상속 재산”, “야곱의 영화”의 표현을 볼 때 이스라엘 백성입니다.
“발밑에 복종하게 하신다”는 히브리 관용적 표현
고대 중동 문화에서 “발밑에 둔다”는 표현은 “정복”, “지배”라는 뜻도 있지만, 더 근본적으로는 “완전한 통제와 권세 아래 둔다”는 의미입니다..
신약에서도 비슷한 표현이 쓰입니다: “자기 발받침이 될 때까지 기다리시느니라” (히브리서 10:13). 이 구절도 하나님의 최종 승리를 말하는 상징적 표현입니다.
“상속 재산”의 의미
“상속 재산”은 이스라엘 백성에게 약속하신 기업(가나안 땅)을 가르킵니다.
하나님은 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 그들의 후손에게 주실 땅을 약속하셨고 (창세기 12:7; 15:18),
여호수아를 통해 그 약속이 성취되어 분배된 유업이 되었습니다.
시편 저자는 이 하나님의 주권적인 선택과 언약의 신실함을 찬양하며, 하나님께서 여전히 그 백성을 위하여 그들의 “유업”을 보존하여 주신다고 선포하고 있습니다.
“야곱의 영화”
1) 하나님이 야곱에게 주신 선택된 신분
하나님은 야곱(이스라엘)을 자신의 기업, 자기 소유 백성, 거룩한 나라로 삼으셨습니다.
이 선택 자체가 “영광스러운 은혜”입니다.
(2) 영토와 유업
하나님이 주신 약속의 땅(가나안), 예루살렘, 그리고 성전은 야곱의 자랑이었습니다.
(3) 언약적 축복
아브라함에게 주신 언약이 이삭을 거쳐 야곱에게 이어졌고,
야곱의 후손은 하나님의 말씀, 율법, 예배, 구속의 역사를 맡은 민족이 되었습니다.
(4) 메시아의 계보
이 구절들은 창세기 12:3b에서 “네 안에서 땅의 모든 가족들이 복을 받으리라, 하셨더라”. 말씀을 상기시킵니다.
하나님의 관심은 이스라엘 민족에게만 국한되지 않습니다.
하나님은 이스라엘을 도구로 쓰셔서 천하 만민을 구하려 하십니다.
- 마태복음 28:19-20:
"그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족들을 가르치고 [아버지]와 [아들]과 [성령]의 이름으로 그들에게 침례를 주며 내가 너희에게 명령한 모든 것을 그들에게 가르쳐 지키게 하라. 보라, 내가 세상의 끝까지 항상 너희와 함께 있으리라, 하시니라. 아멘.”
- 사도행전 1:8:
"오직 [성령]님께서 너희에게 임하신 후에 너희가 권능을 받고 예루살렘과 온 유대와 사마리아에서 그리고 땅의 맨 끝 지역까지 이르러 나를 위한 증인이 되리라, 하시니라”.
만 백성이 주께로 돌아옴(v5~9)
“하나님께서 큰 소리와 함께 올라가시며 {주}께서 나팔 소리와 함께 올라가셨도다.”
이 표현은 하나님께서 왕으로 대관식 혹은 왕좌에 앉으시는 모습을 묘사하고 있습니다.
[6~7] 노래로 [하나님]을 찬양하고 노래로 찬양하라. 노래로 우리 [왕]을 찬양하고 노래로 찬양하라. [하나님]은 온 땅의 [왕]이시니 너희는 깨닫고 노래로 찬양할지어다.
왕께서 왕좌에 앉자 찬양의 노래가 울려 퍼집니다.
[9] 백성의 통치자들이 함께 모였으니 곧 아브라함의 [하나님]의 백성이라. 땅의 방패들이 [하나님]께 속하였으니 그분께서 크게 높여지셨도다.
이 대관식, 혹은 하나님께서 왕좌에 앉으신 곳에 백성의 통치자들이 참가했습니다.
그들은 아브라함의 하나님의 백성입니다.
그리고 하나님은 온 땅을 다스리는 왕으로 경배와 찬양과 존귀를 받으십니다.
이 일은 신약 시대에 일어나고 있습니다.
미래에 하나님은 재림의 주로 재림하셔서 이 땅을 왕으로 다스릴 것입니다.

“또 {주}께서 온 땅을 다스리는 왕이 되시리니 그 날에는 한 {주}만 계시며 그분의 이름도 하나만 있으리라.
- 요한계시록 11:15
“일곱째 천사가 나팔을 불매 하늘에 큰 음성들이 있어 이르되, 이 세상 왕국들이 우리 [주]와 그분의 그리스도의 왕국들이 되었고 그분께서 영원무궁토록 통치하시리로다, 하니”
이스라엘을 통한 천하만민을 구원하시는 왕이심을 노래하고 찬양합니다.
비록 이스라엘이 이런 찬양의 노래를 불렀을지라도, 그들은 유대주의라는 틀에 갇혀 하나님의 뜻을 배척했습니다.
그러나, 하나님의 계획은 결코 실패하지 않습니다.
- 로마서 11:11
“그러므로 내가 말하노니, 그들이 실족함으로 넘어지게 되었느냐? 결코 그럴 수 없느니라. 오히려 그들의 넘어짐을 통해 구원이 이방인들에게 이르렀으니 이것은 그들이 질투하게 하려 함이니라”
하나님은 신약 시대를 통해 이방인에게 복음이 전파되게 하셨습니다.
- 로마서 11:25~26
“형제들아, 너희가 스스로 지혜 있는 것으로 여기지 않게 하기 위하여 이 신비에 대해 너희가 모르기를 내가 원치 아니하노니 이 신비는 곧 이방인들의 충만함이 이르기까지 이스라엘이 부분적으로 눈멀게 된다는 것이라. 그리하여 모든 이스라엘이 구원을 받으리라. 이것은 기록된바, 시온에서 구출자가 나와 야곱에게서 경건치 아니한 것을 돌이키리니”

“내가 다윗의 집과 예루살렘 거주민들 위에 은혜의 영과 간구하는 영을 부어 주리니 그들이 나 곧 자기들이 찌른 나를 바라보고 사람이 자기 외아들을 위하여 애곡하듯 그를 위하여 애곡하며 사람이 자기의 처음 난 자를 위하여 몹시 슬퍼하듯 그를 위하여 몹시 슬퍼하리로다”.
마지막 때에 성령께서 이스라엘 백성에게 부어져 그들이 예수 그리스도가 메시아임을 아실 것입니다.
그들이 세계 선교 사명을 감당하므로, 이 시가 성취될 것입니다.
Background of the Psalm
The psalm’s perspective shifts—from God, to Israel, and then to all nations.
The repeated use of the words “sing” and “praise” is a confession of acknowledging God as King.
Also, this psalm expresses a commitment through song to fulfill the missionary calling of bringing salvation to all nations through Israel.
Content of the Psalm
Praise the Name of God (vv. 1–2)
“O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
For the Lord most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.” (Psalm 47:1–2, KJV)
Who are “all ye people”?
Based on these expressions:
- “He shall subdue the people under us” (v.3)
- “He shall choose our inheritance for us” (v.4)
- “God is the King of all the earth” (v.7)
- “God reigneth over the heathen” (v.8)
- “The princes of the people are gathered together” (v.9)
“All people” refers to all nations, including Israel.
Names of God in the Psalm
- “Most High” (“El Elyon”): emphasizes God’s supreme power and sovereignty.
- “The Lord” (“Yahweh”): the self-existent, eternal One.
- “Great King” (“Melekh Gadol”): highlights God's absolute dominion over all.
God Chooses Israel as His Missionary Tool (vv. 3–4)
“He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.” (Psalm 47:3–4, KJV)
Who is “us”?
Given the terms “inheritance” and “excellency of Jacob,” this refers to the people of Israel.
“Under our feet” is a Hebrew idiom
It symbolizes complete control or dominion.
This is echoed in the New Testament:
“From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.” (Hebrews 10:13, KJV)
Meaning of “Inheritance”
This refers to the promised land given to Israel.
God promised the land to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 12:7; 15:18),
And fulfilled it through Joshua.
The psalm praises God's sovereignty and covenantal faithfulness in preserving this inheritance.
“Excellency of Jacob” includes:
- God’s gracious election of Jacob (Israel)
- The promised land and temple
- Covenant blessings—God’s Word, worship, and redemptive history
- The Messianic lineage
These verses echo Genesis 12:3b:
“...and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12:3, KJV)
God’s concern is not limited to Israel. He uses Israel to bring salvation to all nations.
Matthew 28:19–20
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Acts 1:8
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
All Nations Return to the Lord (vv. 5–9)
“God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.” (Psalm 47:5, KJV)
This portrays a royal coronation or enthronement scene.
“Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.” (Psalm 47:6–7, KJV)
As the King ascends His throne, the people erupt in songs of praise.
“The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham:
for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.” (Psalm 47:9, KJV)
The leaders of the nations gather before the enthroned King.
They are called “the people of the God of Abraham.”
God, the King of all the earth, receives praise and glory.
This is being fulfilled in the New Testament era,
And it will be completed in Christ’s second coming as King.
Zechariah 14:9
“And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.” (KJV)
Revelation 11:15
“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.” (KJV)
This psalm proclaims God as King, who saves all nations through Israel.
Although Israel sang this psalm, they later rejected God’s will by clinging to legalism.
However, God’s plan never fails.
Romans 11:11
“I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.” (KJV)
God allowed the gospel to reach the Gentiles in this New Testament era.
Romans 11:25–26
“For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits;
that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer,
and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.” (KJV)
Zechariah 12:10
“And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications:
and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced,
and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son,
and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” (KJV)
In the end times, the Holy Spirit will be poured out on Israel, and they will recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
As they fulfill their missionary calling, this psalm will be fully realized.
