언약의 구조 이해

시편 44편 17절에서 시인은 “주의 언약”을 언급합니다. 이 언약은 단순한 약속이 아니라, 하나님과 그분의 백성 사이에 맺어진 성스러운 관계이며, 그 구조는 다음과 같습니다:

• 역사적 서문: 하나님께서 과거에 어떻게 역사하셨는지를 상기시킴
  → 예: 창세기 1장 – 하나님이 천지를 창조하셨고, 사람을 그분의 형상대로 지으심.
• 상벌 규정: 언약의 순종 시 상, 불순종 시 벌
  → 예: 창세기 2:17 – “선악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매를 먹는 날에는 반드시 죽으리라.”

 

시의 이해 

언약을 어겼을 때 임하는 징벌 (1–16절)

• 시인은 과거 하나님께서 이스라엘을 위해 행하신 구원의 역사를 기억합니다(1–3절).
• 그러나 지금은 그 하나님께서 마치 버리신 것처럼 느껴집니다(9–16절).
• 언약의 벌이 임한 듯한 상황입니다.

 

언약을 기억하고 무죄를 주장함 (17절)

“이 모든 일이 우리에게 임하였으나 우리가 주를 잊지 아니하였으며 주의 언약 가운데서 거짓으로 행하지 아니하였나이다.”

• 시인은 고난이 언약을 어긴 결과가 아님을 호소합니다.
• 언약을 기억하고, 자신들은 하나님께 신실했다고 말합니다.

 

고난에 대한 당혹과 탄식 (18–25절)

• 언약을 지켰음에도 벌이 임한 현실에 대해 시인은 당황하고 혼란스러워합니다.
• “우리가 종일 주를 위하여 죽임을 당하며 도살할 양 같이 여김을 받았나이다”(22절)
• 언약의 논리로는 설명되지 않는 고난을 겪고 있는 것입니다.

 

언약에 기초한 간구 (26절)

“일어나 우리를 도우소서. 주의 긍휼로 인하여 우리를 구속하소서.”

• 시인은 자신의 신실함을 주장하면서도 긍휼을 구합니다.
• 하나님과의 언약 관계를 근거로 하나님의 도우심과 구속하심을 간청합니다.

 

적용

 

우리의 기도: 언약 백성의 갈등과 소망

신자도 설명되지 않는 고난을 겪습니다.

• 오늘날 우리도 시편 44편의 시인처럼 하나님께 충성하며 살지만 고난을 겪을 수 있습니다.
• 하나님이 멀리 계신 것 같고, 응답하지 않으시는 것처럼 느껴질 수 있습니다.
• 이럴 때 우리는 쉽게 낙심하거나 의심하게 됩니다.

그럼에도 불구하고 기도해야 합니다.

• 시인은 혼란스럽고 답답한 현실 속에서도 기도를 멈추지 않았습니다.
• 언약 백성의 기도는, 상황을 이해해서가 아니라 하나님의 인자하심과 언약에 대한 신뢰로부터 나옵니다.

 

그리스도 안에서 드리는 기도

• 우리는 예수 그리스도 안에서 더 온전한 언약을 받았습니다.
• 그리스도의 이름으로 드리는 기도는 하나님께서 반드시 들으시는 기도입니다.
• 우리의 현실이 이해되지 않아도, 하나님은 여전히 언약을 지키시는 분이십니다.

 

Background of the Psalm

Understanding the Structure of the Covenant

In Psalm 44:17, the psalmist refers to “thy covenant.” This covenant is not a mere promise, but a sacred relationship established between God and His people. The structure of such a covenant typically includes the following elements:

• Historical Prologue: A recollection of how God has acted in the past.
  → Example: Genesis 1 – God created the heavens and the earth, and made man in His own image.
• Stipulations of Blessing and Curse: Blessings promised for obedience, and punishments warned for disobedience.
  → Example: Genesis 2:17 – “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”

 

Understanding of the Psalm

 

1) Punishment That Follows Covenant Violation (vv. 1–16)

• The psalmist recalls God’s acts of deliverance for Israel in the past (vv. 1–3).
• However, in the present, it feels as though God has rejected and forsaken them (vv. 9–16).
• The situation seems to reflect the covenantal curse.

 

2) Remembering the Covenant and Asserting Innocence (v. 17)

“All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.” (Psalm 44:17, KJV)

• The psalmist appeals that their suffering is not the result of unfaithfulness.
• They declare their remembrance of the covenant and their loyalty to God.

 

3) Confusion and Lament Over the Suffering (vv. 18–25)

• Despite keeping the covenant, they are experiencing hardship.
• The psalmist is bewildered and troubled by this reality.

“Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.” (Psalm 44:22, KJV)

• The suffering they face cannot be explained by the typical covenant logic of obedience and blessing.

 

4) A Plea Based on the Covenant (v. 26)

“Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.” (Psalm 44:26, KJV)

• The psalmist pleads not based on merit, but on God's mercy.
• They cry out for deliverance on the basis of the covenantal relationship.

 

 

Application

Our Prayer: The Conflict and Hope of the Covenant People

Even believers experience suffering that cannot be explained.

• Just like the psalmist in Psalm 44, we may live faithfully before God and still go through affliction.
• At times, it may feel as though God is distant and not responding.
• In such moments, we are easily tempted to grow discouraged or fall into doubt.

Yet we must continue to pray.

• The psalmist did not cease to pray, even in the midst of confusion and frustration.
• The prayers of God’s covenant people do not arise from fully understanding their situation, but from trusting in God’s lovingkindness and His covenant faithfulness.

Prayer in Christ

• In Christ Jesus, we have received a more perfect covenant.
• Prayers offered in the name of Christ are prayers God has promised to hear.
• Even when we do not understand our present circumstances, God remains faithful to His covenant.
