내가 사망의 그늘진 골짜기를 다닐지라도 참으로 해를 두려워하지 아니하리니 주께서 나와 함께 계시며 주의 막대기와 지팡이가 나를 위로하시나이다.

 

내가 사망의 그늘진 골짜기를 다닐지라도

이제 여름 목초지를 찾아 이동하는 양떼와 목자는 계곡을 통과하고 있습니다.

이 계곡은 ‘사망의 그늘진’는 ‘사망’과 ‘그늘진’의 합성어입니다. 또 이 단어는 ‘깊은 그늘진’이란 의미로도 사용되었습니다. 골짜기는 어둡습니다. 이 어둠을 이용하여 맹수들이 양떼들을 노리고 있습니다.

 

주께서 나와 함께 계시며

아무리 무서운 곳에 있더라도 누군가가 나와 함께 있으면 두려움이 반감됩니다.

하물며, 나를 인도하는 목자와 있다는 사실은 두려움을 이길 수 있는 큰 힘이 됩니다.

 

주의 막대기와 지팡이가

“막대기”는 공격용 무기입니다. 이 단어는 창세기에서 왕권을 상징하는 “홀”이라는 단어로도 사용되었습니다. 이는 왕의 권위, 왕의 힘을 의미합니다.

서부 영화에서 보면 카우보이들은 틈만 있으면 무언가를 세워두고 총을 싸서 맞추는 연습을 하거나 내기를 하는 장면들을 봅니다.

이스라엘의 목자들도 마찬가지입니다. 막대기를 던져 목표물을 맞추는 연습을 게을리하지 않습니다.

위급 상황에 양떼들의 적들을 향해 정확히 던져야 하기 때문입니다.

“지팡이”는 ‘지탱하다’의 의미가 있습니다. ‘의지하다’의 의미가 있습니다.

이스라엘이 이집트를 의지할 때, 하나님은 이집트가 ‘상한 갈대 지팡이’(이사야 36:6)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

또한, 이 지팡이는 교정할 때, 사용합니다.

양들이 길을 잘못 갈 때, 바르게 인도할 때 사용합니다.

 

나를 위로하시나이다.

“위로”라는 단어는 두 가지 의미로 사용되었습니다.

첫째는, ‘안식을 주다’입니다.

“그의 이름을 노아라 부르며 이르되, {주}께서 저주하신 땅으로 인해 우리가 행하는 일과 우리 손의 수고에 대하여 바로 이 아들이 우리를 위로하리라, 하였더라. (창세기 5:29)

“노아”의 의미는 “rest”, ‘쉼’이라는 의미입니다.

“위로”는 ‘쉼을 주다’라는 의미입니다.

두려움으로 인해 마음의 쉼이 없을 때, 주의 막대기를 통한 보호하심은 우리 마음에 참 된 쉼, 안식을 줍니다.

둘째는, ‘교정하다’입니다.

“위로’라는 단어는 ‘회개하다’, ‘마음을 바꾸다’입니다.’sorry’라는 의미를 가집니다.

이 단어는 “지팡이”와 연관이 있습니다.

하나님께서 바른 길을 가게 하실 때 지팡이를 사용하십니다.

이 지팡이를 통해 잘못된 길로 가고 있음을 깨닫게 됩니다.

이 때에, ‘sorry’한 마음, 회개하는 마음을 가집니다.

내면에 참 된 안식을 가지는 것과 회개하는 것이 두 가지가 다 안식입니다.

이 안식은 목자로부터 옵니다.

목자가 함께 있으므로, 죽음의 골짜기를 통과할 때 두려움이 없습니다.

혹여나 맹수들의 공격이 있더라도, 길을 잘못 들어서더라도 목자가 함께 있어 우리를 보호하고 바르게 인도해 주실 것이기 때문입니다.

 

여러분들은 두려움 속에서 하나님의 말씀이 나에게 위로와 용기를 주는 경험을 해 보신적이 있으시나요?

두려움 속에 기도할 때, 기도의 응답을 받고 기뻐한 적이 있으신가요?

눈물을 흘리며, 가슴을 치고 회개한 적이 있으신가요?

이는 하나님께서 우리와 함께 계시다는 증거이며, 주님께서 우리에게 주시는 위로입니다.

 

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4, KJV)

 

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
As the shepherd and his sheep move through the dark valleys to find summer pastures, they pass through deep, shadowed places. This “valley of the shadow of death” combines the meanings of “death” and “shadow,” symbolizing deep darkness and fear. The valley is dimly lit, and in the cover of this darkness, wild animals lurk, waiting to attack the flock. However, the presence of the shepherd allows the sheep to pass without fear.

 

For thou art with me
No matter how fearful the place, when someone is with us, our fear diminishes significantly. How much more, then, does this hold true when our guide is the Shepherd! The fact that we are with the Shepherd who leads us gives us great strength to overcome fear. With the Lord by our side, we can walk forward boldly.

 

Thy rod and thy staff
The “rod” is a defensive weapon. In Genesis, the word also appears as “scepter,” symbolizing royal authority and power. Just as cowboys in Western movies often practice shooting to perfect their aim, shepherds in Israel also practiced throwing their rod to strike a target. It was crucial to be able to throw it with precision to protect the flock from predators in moments of danger. The Lord, too, is prepared to defend us with His powerful authority.

The “staff” signifies “support” or “dependence.” It represents something to lean on. When Israel relied on Egypt, God warned them, saying that Egypt was “the staff of this broken reed” (Isaiah 36:6, KJV). Furthermore, the staff is used to correct and guide the sheep. When the sheep go astray, the shepherd uses the staff to guide them back to the right path. The staff represents God’s faithful guidance, helping us to walk in the right way.

 

They comfort me
The word “comfort” is used here with two significant meanings.
First, it means “to give rest.” In Genesis, Noah was named because “This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.” (Genesis 5:29, KJV) The name “Noah” means “rest.” Likewise, “comfort” here represents “to give rest.” When fear steals away our peace, the Lord’s protection with His rod gives our hearts true rest.

Second, “comfort” also means “to correct.” The word for “comfort” here includes the idea of repentance and turning of the heart, often connected to the sentiment of being “sorry.” This meaning is associated with the “staff,” which God uses to lead us to the right path. When we stray, God uses His staff to make us aware of the wrong path we’re on, guiding us to turn back. In this turning, we feel repentance—a sorry heart that leads to true peace.

Both the inner peace that comes from true rest and the repentance that brings us back to God are forms of God’s comfort. This comfort comes from the Shepherd. Since the Shepherd is with us, we have no reason to fear, even when walking through the valley of death. Whether we face the attacks of wild animals or wander off the path, the Shepherd will protect and guide us back to safety.
