시의 배경
이 시편은 전통적으로 다윗 왕이 지은 것으로, 그가 하나님의 법과 창조물에 대해 깊은 경외심을 표현한 내용입니다. 이 시편은 크게 두 가지 주제로 나뉘어 있습니다: 일반 계시와 특별 계시입니다. 첫 번째 부분에서 다윗은 자연 세계가 하나님의 영광과 권능, 지혜를 어떻게 드러내며, 모든 인류에게 하나님의 존재에 대한 증거를 제공하는지를 감탄하고 있습니다.
두 번째 부분에서는 하나님의 말씀, 특히 율법(토라)에 초점을 맞추어 그것이 삶을 위한 완전하고 신뢰할 수 있는 지침이라고 말합니다. 다윗은 하나님의 말씀이 변화를 가져오며, 지혜와 기쁨을 주고 영적 통찰력을 제공한다고 강조합니다. 또한 그는 하나님의 법이 의식적인 죄와 무의식적인 죄를 드러내는 역할을 하고, 자신이 죄로부터 깨끗해지기를 바라는 마음을 표현합니다. 마지막으로, 그는 죄로부터 보호해 달라는 기도와 함께 하나님을 자신의 구속자이자 힘으로 신뢰하는 마음을 고백합니다.

하나님을 어떻게 알 수 있는가?
일반계시
1~6절은 자연을 통해 하나님을 아는 일반계시에 대한 내용입니다.
로마서 1:19~20
이는 [하나님]을 알 만한 것이 그들 속에 분명히 드러나 있기 때문이라. [하나님]께서 그것을 그들에게 보이셨느니라.
그분의 보이지 아니하는 것들 곧 그분의 영원하신 권능과 신격은 창세로부터 분명히 보이며 만들어진 것들을 통해 깨달아 알 수 있나니 그러므로 그들이 변명할 수 없느니라.
특별계시
우리의 죄와 구원에 대해 성경 말씀을 통해 알 수 있습니다.
깨닫지 못하는 죄에 대해서
누가 능히 자기 잘못들을 깨달으리요? 주께서는 은밀한 허물에서 나를 정결하게 하소서(12).
고의로 지는 죄에 대해서
또 주의 종을 지키사 고의로 짓는 죄들로부터 떠나게 하시고 그 죄들이 나를 지배하지 못하게 하소서(13)
구원자에 대해서
오 나의 힘이시요, 나의 구속자이신 {주}여(14),
주여
주는 ‘야훼’ 인간과 언약하신 하나님이십니다. ‘야훼’ 하나님은 죄로 타락한 인간을 구원하시기 위해 인간과 언약하신 하나님이십니다.
구속자
“구속자”는 대속의 개념입니다. 누군가를 대신하다는 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 누군가를 대신해서 가문을 잇게 하는 것, 누군가를 대신해서 빚을 갚아 주는 것, 누군가를 대신해서 벌을 받는 것이 다 이런 ‘구속자’의 개념에 포함됩니다.
이런 죄와 구속에 대한 지식은 오직 특별계시를 통해서만 알 수 있습니다.
시의 내용
그것들은 금보다, 참으로 많은 정금보다 더 사모해야 할 것들이며 또 꿀과 벌집보다 더 달도다(10).
오늘 시인은 “그것들” 곧 하나님의 말씀이 많은 정금보다 더 낫고 꿀보다 더 달다고 말합니다.
시인은 왜 이렇게 노래하고 있을까요?
우리 말씀을 통해 하나님의 말씀을 사랑하는 시인에 대해 배우고자 합니다.
토라
{주}의 율법은 완전하여 혼을 회심시키고
“율법”은 ‘토라’입니다. ‘토라’는 모세오경을 지칭하기도 하고, 하나님의 말씀 전체를 지칭하기도 합니다.
“완전”하다는 의미는 ‘흠이 없다’, ‘비난할 것이 없다’라는 의미입니다.
‘회심시키다’의 의미는 ‘다시 회복시키다’, ‘돌아가게 하다’입니다.
하나님의 말씀은 지친 영혼을 회복시키는 능력이 있습니다.
증언
{주}의 증언은 확실하여
‘증언’는 testimony’입니다. 실제로 입증된 것입니다.
하나님의 말씀은 성취됩니다.
하나님]께서 이르시되, 빛이 있으라, 하시매 빛이 있었습니다. (창1:3)
구원자를 보내 주신다는 언약의 성취로 예수님이 이 땅에 오셨습니다.
많은 대언자들의 대언들이 역사적으로 성취되었습니다.
“확신하다”의 의미는 ‘믿을 수 있다’, ‘신뢰할 수 있다’입니다.
세상의 말들은 신뢰할 수 없습니다.
그러나 하나님의 말씀은 신뢰할 수 있습니다.
오늘 이 시대 우리에게 ‘요한 계시록’의 말씀이 주어졌습니다.
이 또한 성취되리라고 우리는 믿을 수 있습니다.
왜냐하면, 하나님의 말씀은 ‘확실’하기 때문입니다.
단순한 자를 지혜롭게 하며
“단순한 자”는 ‘순진한’ 자입니다.
아직 경험이 부족한 자입니다.
그러므로, 믿고 신뢰하기가 힘든 상태에 놓인 자입니다.
하나님의 말씀은 이런 자들을 지혜롭게 합니다.
“내가 주의 훈계들을 지키므로 노인들보다 잘 깨닫나이다:(시편 119:100)
주의 법규
{주}의 법규들은 정당하여 마음을 기쁘게 하고
‘법규’는 도덕적으로 행하거나 행하지 말아야 하는 것들에 대한 말씀입니다.
‘정당하다’는 ‘right’입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 ‘행위’와 ‘행동’에 관한 말씀들은 모두 다 ‘옳습니다’
잘 정비된 조직과 나라에 살며, 바르게 생각하고 행동하는 국민들과 사는 것은 기쁨이 넘칩니다.
반대로, 폭력이 만연한 사회에 사는 것은 두려움과 슬픔이 있습니다.
이런 사회에 사는 사람들은 늘 안정된 사회, 나라를 소망하게 됩니다.
주의 명령
{주}의 명령은 순수하여 눈을 밝게 하는도다.
주의 명령은 십계명을 의미합니다.
‘순수하다’는 의미는 ‘깨끗하다’, ‘어떤 불순물이 없다’는 의미입니다.
순수한 하나님의 말씀, 명령을 묵상하면 우리의 눈이 밝아집니다.
왜 살인하지 말라고 했지?
왜 간음하지 말라고 했지?
왜 도둑질하지 말라고 했지?
묵상할 때, 하나님께서 이웃을 사랑하라는 의미를 깨닫을 수 있습니다.
주를 두려워하는 것
{주}를 두려워하는 것은 깨끗하여 영원토록 지속되고
“주를 두려워하는 것”은 지혜서의 말씀을 의미한다고 볼 수 있습니다.
“{주}를 두려워하는 것이 지식의 시작이거늘 어리석은 자들은 지혜와 훈계를 멸시하느니라(잠언 1:7)
주의 판단
{주}의 판단들은 진실하고 다 의로우니
“주의 판단”은 징계, 심판입니다.
주의 징계와 심판은 “진실”합니다. 반드시 일어납니다.
그리고 그 심판은 “의롭습니다”. 하나님의 심판은 공의와 정의의 심판입니다.
그러므로, 우리는 그 심판에 수긍할 수 있습니다.
주의 종이 또한 그것들로 경고를 받나니 그것들을 지킬 때에 큰 보상이 있나이다(11).
시인은 하나님의 말씀을 통해 자신의 삶을 제어한다고 고백하고 있습니다.
시인은 하나님의 말씀에 순종하는 것이 헛된 것이 아님을 확신있게 말하고 있습니다.
시인은 하나님 말씀을 구체적으로 알고 있습니다.
시인은 말씀에 순종했을 때의 말씀이 주는 여러 유익들에 대한 체험이 있습니다.
시인과 같이 하나님의 말씀에 대한 바른 지식과 순종이 있을 때, 시인처럼 하나님의 말씀을 사랑한다고 고백할 수 있습니다.
Background of the Psalm
This psalm, traditionally attributed to King David, reflects his deep reverence for God’s law and creation. The psalm divides into two main themes: general revelation (verses 1–6) and special revelation (verses 7–14). In the first section, David marvels at how the natural world reveals God’s glory, power, and wisdom, providing evidence of God’s existence to all humanity. The second section shifts focus to God’s Word, particularly the Law (Torah), as a perfect and trustworthy guide for life.
David emphasizes the transformative power of God’s Word, which brings wisdom, joy, and spiritual insight. He also acknowledges the role of God’s law in revealing both conscious and unconscious sins, expressing his desire for personal purity and dependence on God’s mercy. Ultimately, the psalm concludes with a prayer for protection from sin and a heartfelt expression of trust in God as Redeemer and Strength.
This psalm is a reflection on how God communicates with humanity through both the created order and the written Word, and it highlights the psalmist’s love and devotion to God’s commands.
How Can We Know God?
General Revelation (Verses 1–6)
The first six verses discuss general revelation, which is knowing God through nature.
Romans 1:19–20 (KJV) says,
"Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse."
Special Revelation
We can know about our sin and salvation through the Scriptures.
Concerning Unconscious Sins
"Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults." (v. 12, KJV)
Concerning Willful Sins
"Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me." (v. 13, KJV)
Concerning the Redeemer
"O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer." (v. 14, KJV)
Yahweh, the Covenant God
The term "Lord" refers to Yahweh, the God who made a covenant with humanity. Yahweh is the God who made a covenant with fallen mankind to bring salvation.
The Redeemer
The "Redeemer" carries the concept of substitution, which means to act on someone else's behalf. This includes restoring a family line, paying off someone’s debts, or receiving punishment on another’s behalf. Such knowledge about sin and redemption is only known through special revelation.
Content of the Psalm
"More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb." (v. 10, KJV)
Today, the psalmist declares that "they"—God’s words—are better than fine gold and sweeter than honey. Why does the psalmist say this? Through the text, we want to learn from a psalmist who loves God's word.
The Law (Torah)
"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul." (v. 7, KJV)
The term "law" is "Torah," which refers either to the Pentateuch or the entire Word of God. The meaning of "perfect" is "without flaw" or "blameless." "Converting" means to "restore" or "bring back." God's word has the power to restore a weary soul.
The Testimony
"The testimony of the Lord is sure." (v. 7, KJV)
"Testimony" refers to something proven, and God's word has been fulfilled.
"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." (Genesis 1:3, KJV)
The sending of Jesus as the Savior fulfills the covenant promise. Many of the prophecies of the prophets have come true in history. The word "sure" means "trustworthy." Human words may fail, but God’s word is reliable.
We have been given the "Revelation of John," which we can trust will also be fulfilled because God’s word is "sure."
Making the Simple Wise
"The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple." (v7, KJV)
The "simple" refers to those who are inexperienced and perhaps not yet confident in trusting others. God’s word makes such people wise.
"I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts." (Psalm 119:100, KJV)
The Statutes
"The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart." (v. 8, KJV)
Statutes are moral instructions for what should or should not be done. "Right" means they are correct. God's commands concerning our actions are all "right."
Living in a well-ordered society or nation brings joy, while living in a violent society brings fear and sorrow. In such societies, people long for a stable and orderly life.
The Commandment
"The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes." (v. 8, KJV)
This refers to the Ten Commandments. "Pure" means "clean" and "without impurity." Meditating on God’s pure commandments opens our eyes.
Why shouldn’t we kill, commit adultery, or steal?
As we meditate on these, we understand that God commands us to love our neighbors.
The Fear of the Lord
"The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever." (v. 9, KJV)
"The fear of the Lord" refers to wisdom literature.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7, KJV)
The Judgments
"The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether." (v. 9, KJV)
God’s judgments refer to discipline and justice. They are "true" and inevitable. His judgments are "righteous," full of justice. We can trust His judgments.
"Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward." (v. 11, KJV)
The psalmist confesses that God's word guides his life. He confidently declares that obedience to God's word is not in vain. He knows God’s word deeply and has experienced the blessings of obedience. Like the psalmist, when we have proper knowledge of and obedience to God’s word, we can declare our love for it.
