주의 빛 안에서
모든 것은 눈에서 시작됩니다.
"그의 눈앞에는 하나님을 두려워함이 없다." (1절)
하나님이 그의 시야에 없습니다. 존재의 문제가 아닙니다. 위치의 문제입니다. 하나님은 계십니다. 그러나 그의 눈이 하나님을 향해 있지 않습니다. 그리고 그것은 단순한 실수가 아닙니다. 그는 선을 그쳤고, 악을 미워하지 않습니다. 시선의 왜곡이 의지의 고착이 되었습니다. 그 눈은 스스로 닫혀 있습니다.
하나님이 지워진 눈에는 자기만 보입니다.
"그는 자기 눈에서 우쭐대는도다." (2절)
자기 눈으로 자기를 보면 언제나 매끄럽습니다. 흠이 없습니다. 수치가 없습니다. 거기서 말이 나오고, 꾀가 나오고, 손이 움직입니다. 악인의 문제는 의지만이 아닙니다. 눈입니다. 그리고 그 눈은 전염됩니다. 누군가 나를 향해 손가락을 겨눌 때, 나는 그 손가락을 봅니다. 그 시선이 길어질수록 그가 커집니다. 어느 순간, 나의 눈앞에서도 하나님이 밀려납니다.
그러나 순서가 있습니다.
"주의 빛 안에서 빛을 보리이다." (9절)
בְּאוֹרְךָ נִרְאֶה־אוֹר
נִרְאֶה, 니팔형입니다. 수동태입니다. 내가 본 것이 아닙니다. 보임을 받은 것입니다. 하나님의 빛이 먼저 들어왔습니다. 그때 비로소 눈이 열렸습니다. 악인의 눈이 어두운 것은 노력이 부족해서만이 아닙니다. 빛을 거부했기 때문입니다. 그리고 시인의 눈이 열린 것은 그가 더 경건해서가 아닙니다. 빛이 먼저 들어왔기 때문입니다. 순서가 바뀌지 않습니다. 이것이 은혜입니다.
그렇다면 빛을 받은 자는 무엇을 합니까.
"교만한 자의 발이 나를 치러 오지 못하게 하시며 사악한 자의 손이 나를 제거하지 못하게 하소서." (11절)
조용한 관조가 아닙니다. 부르짖음입니다. 빛 안에서 악의 최종 결론을 이미 알고 있습니다. 그러나 악은 아직 역사 속에 있습니다. 교만한 자의 발은 아직 움직이고 있고, 사악한 자의 손은 아직 뻗어 있습니다. 시인은 그 긴장 안에서 하나님께 직접 나아갑니다. 이미 알지만 아직 싸우는 자의 부르짖음입니다. 그것이 빛 안에서 하는 행동입니다.
그 빛 안에서 시인은 봅니다.
"거기서 불법을 행하는 자들이 쓰러졌으니, 그들이 내던져져서 능히 일어서지 못하리이다." (12절)
현실은 그대로입니다. 그런데 그 현실 안에서 내가 달라집니다.
어제는 그가 커 보였습니다. 오늘도 그는 거기 있습니다. 그런데 오늘은 그가 다르게 보입니다. 그가 작아진 것이 아닙니다. 그 뒤에 있던 것이 보이기 시작했습니다. 큰 산 같은 하나님의 의가 보입니다. 큰 깊음 같은 하나님의 심판이 보입니다. 그 앞에서 그는 처음부터 작은 자였습니다.
거기서 그들이 쓰러졌습니다. 완료형입니다. 이미입니다. 지금 그가 서 있는 것처럼 보이지만, 빛 안에서 보는 눈에는 그가 이미 쓰러진 자로 보입니다. 그것을 아는 자는 오늘을 다르게 삽니다. 그를 향해 분노를 쏟지 않습니다. 그를 향해 절망하지 않습니다. 이미 끝난 자를 향해 무릎 꿇지 않습니다. 대신 하나님께 부르짖습니다.
그것으로 충분합니다.
주여, 주의 빛을 보내소서. 그 빛 안에서 주께 부르짖게 하소서.
In Your Light
A Meditation on Psalm 36
Everything begins with the eyes.
"There is no fear of God before his eyes." (v.1)
God is absent from his sight. This is not a question of existence. It is a question of position. God is there. But his eyes are not turned toward God. And this is no mere mistake. He has ceased to do good. He does not hate evil. What began as a distortion of sight has hardened into a fixation of will. His eyes are closed from within.
Eyes from which God has been erased see only the self.
"For he flattereth himself in his own eyes." (v.2)
When a man looks at himself through his own eyes, he always appears smooth. Without blemish. Without shame. From there, words come. Schemes come. Hands move. The problem with the wicked is not will alone. It is eyes. And those eyes are contagious. When someone points a finger at us, we look at that finger. The longer we look, the larger he becomes. Until, at some point, God is pushed out from before our own eyes as well.
Yet there is an order that does not change.
"In thy light shall we see light." (v.9)
בְּאוֹרְךָ נִרְאֶה־אוֹר
נִרְאֶה — Niphal. Passive. It is not that we have seen. It is that we have been made to see. The light of God entered first. Only then were our eyes opened. The eyes of the wicked are dark not merely for lack of effort. They have refused the light. And the eyes of the psalmist were opened not because he was more devout. The light entered first. The order does not reverse. This is grace.
Then what does the one who has received the light do?
"Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me." (v.11)
Not quiet contemplation. A cry. In the light, the final end of wickedness is already known. Yet the wicked remain within history. The foot of pride still moves. The hand of the wicked still reaches. The psalmist, within that tension, goes directly to God. It is the cry of one who already knows, yet still fights. That is what it means to act within the light.
And within that light, the psalmist sees.
"There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise." (v.12)
Reality has not changed. Yet within that reality, something in me has changed.
Yesterday he looked large. Today he is still there. Yet today he looks different. He has not grown smaller. What was behind him has come into view. The righteousness of God, like great mountains. The judgment of God, like a great deep. Before these, he was always a small man.
There they have fallen. Perfect tense. Already. Though he appears to stand, to eyes that see within the light, he is already a fallen man. The one who knows this lives today differently. He does not pour out his rage toward him. He does not despair over him. He does not bow the knee to one who is already finished. Instead, he cries out to God.
That is enough.
Lord, send your light. And in that light, let us cry out to you.
