나의 병거를 세는 눈, 나를 조준하시는 주의 눈
찬양의 근거: 하나님이 누구신가
시편 33편은 찬양으로 시작합니다. 그런데 시인은 찬양하라고 말하기 전에 먼저 이유를 댑니다. 주의 말씀은 옳고, 그분의 모든 일은 진리 안에서 이루어집니다(4절). 그분은 말씀 한마디로 하늘을 만드셨고(6절), 열방의 계획을 무산시키시며(10절), 한 백성을 자신의 상속 유업으로 택하셨습니다(12절). 찬양은 기분이 좋을 때 나오는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 어떤 분이신지를 알 때 나옵니다.
우리의 본능: 아침마다 점검하는 병거의 숫자
시인은 이 장엄한 찬양의 근거를 우리 삶의 가장 치열한 자리로 가져옵니다. 눈을 뜨자마자 우리는 셉니다. 오늘 하루를 버텨낼 에너지, 통장 잔고, 나를 도와줄 사람들의 목록. 전쟁을 앞둔 왕이 밤새 병거의 숫자를 점검하듯, 우리도 아침마다 자신의 자원을 점검합니다. 그리고 그 숫자가 충분하지 않을 때 불안이 밀려옵니다.
시인은 그 지점을 정확히 건드립니다. "많은 군대로 구원 받은 왕이 없으며 용사가 많은 힘으로 구출 받지 못하는도다. 안전을 위해서는 말도 헛되나니 그가 자기의 큰 힘으로 아무도 건지지 못하리로다." (16-17절) 자원은 도구일 뿐, 구원 그 자체가 될 수 없습니다.
시선의 전환: 보라(Hinneh), 나를 조준하시는 눈
그리고 18절에서 방향을 바꿉니다. "보라(הִנֵּה), 주의 눈은 그분을 두려워하는 자들 곧 그분의 긍휼에 소망을 두는 자들 위에 있나니" (18절)
히네(הִנֵּה), "보라"는 부드러운 권유가 아닙니다. 병거를 세느라 고개를 숙이고 있는 우리를 향한 강제적 멈춤입니다. 찬양이 메말랐던 이유는 상황이 나빠서가 아니라, 세지 말아야 할 것을 세느라 봐야 할 것을 보지 못했기 때문입니다.
그렇다면 무엇을 보라는 것입니까. 주의 눈입니다. 에인 아도나이(עֵין יְהוָה). 여기서 눈은 단수형입니다. 하나님은 온 인류를 한눈에 감찰하시면서도, 동시에 당신이라는 한 영혼을 전부인 것처럼 조준하시는 분입니다. 무표정한 숫자가 아니라, 이름을 부르시며 인격적으로 마주하십니다.
하나님은 당신을 상속 유업으로 택하셨습니다. "{주}를 자기 하나님으로 삼은 민족 곧 그분께서 자신의 상속 유업으로 택하신 백성은 복이 있도다"(12절). 주인은 자기 유업에서 눈을 떼지 않습니다. 그 눈은 당신이 눈치채지 못한 순간에도 당신의 결핍을 살피고, 당신을 사망에서 건지기 위해 단 한 순간도 시선을 거두지 않는 책임지는 눈입니다.
경외와 소망: 찬양이 시작되는 지점
이 시선은 누구 위에 머뭅니까. 경외하는 자와 긍휼에 소망을 두는 자 위에 있습니다. 경외(야레)는 내 병거가 헛됨을 인정하고 하나님의 크심 앞에 서는 것입니다. 소망(야할)은 그분의 긍휼이 나타날 때까지 시선을 거두지 않고 기다리는 것입니다. 이 둘은 순서가 있습니다. 내 자원의 한계를 먼저 인정한 사람만이, 하나님의 긍휼을 진정으로 기다릴 수 있습니다.
찬양의 전환은 이 지점에서 일어납니다. 내가 나의 자원을 점검하던 눈을 내려놓고, 나를 바라보시는 하나님의 눈 앞에 설 때입니다. 내가 나를 보는 눈은 늘 모자라고 불안하지만, 나를 보시는 하나님의 눈은 언제나 인자하고 넉넉합니다.
기도
오늘 내 안의 용사가 지쳐 있고 병거의 바퀴가 빠져 있다 해도 낙심하지 않겠습니다. 구원은 나를 바라보시는 하나님의 시선에 있기 때문입니다."하나님, 오늘 제가 저를 보는 눈보다 저를 보시는 주의 눈을 더 신뢰합니다.
The Eyes That Count My Chariots, The Eye of the Lord Focused on Me
The Grounds for Praise: Who God Is
Psalm 33 begins with praise. However, before the psalmist calls us to sing, he first provides the reasons. The word of the Lord is right, and all His works are done in truth (v. 4). By His word, the heavens were made (v. 6). He bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought (v. 10), and He has chosen a people as His own inheritance (v. 12). Praise does not spring forth simply when we feel good; it arises when we truly know who God is.
Our Instinct: Counting the Number of Chariots Every Morning
The psalmist brings this grand foundation of praise down to the most intense battleground of our lives. As soon as we open our eyes, we begin to count: the energy left to endure the day, our bank balances, and the list of people who might help us. Like a king inspecting his chariots the night before a battle, we audit our resources every morning. And when the numbers seem insufficient, anxiety rushes in.
The psalmist strikes exactly at that point: "There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength." (vv. 16-17). Our resources are merely tools; they are not salvation itself.
The Shift in Perspective: Behold (Hinneh), The Eye Focused on Me
Then, in verse 18, the direction shifts: "Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;" (v. 18).
Hinneh (הִנֵּה), "Behold," is not a gentle suggestion. It is a forceful halt addressed to those of us hanging our heads low, preoccupied with counting chariots. The reason our praise has run dry is not because our situation is dire, but because we have been looking at what we shouldn't count while failing to see what we truly should.
What, then, are we to see? It is the Eye of the Lord (Ein Adonai, עֵין יְהוָה). Here, the word "eye" is singular, not plural. While God beholds all the sons of men, He simultaneously focuses on you as a single soul, as if you were His entire world. He does not see you as a faceless statistic; He gazes upon you personally, calling you by name.
God has chosen you as His inheritance. "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance" (v. 12). An owner never takes his eyes off his inheritance. His eye perceives your lack even before you do—a responsible eye that never wavers for a single moment to deliver you from death.
Reverence and Hope: Where Praise Begins
Upon whom does this divine gaze rest? It is upon those who fear Him and those who hope in His mercy. To fear (Yare) is to admit that my chariots are in vain and to stand before the greatness of God. To hope (Yahal) is to wait and keep one's eyes fixed until His mercy (Chesed) appears. There is an order here: only those who first acknowledge the limits of their own resources can truly wait for God’s mercy.
The turning point of praise occurs at this very juncture—when I lower the eyes that were auditing my resources and stand before the Eye of God that beholds me. The eyes with which I view myself are always lacking and anxious, but the Eye of God that watches over me is always gracious and abundant.
Prayer
Even if the mighty man within me is weary today and the wheels of my chariot have fallen off, I will not lose heart. For salvation does lie in the gaze of God who watches over me.
"Lord, today I trust Your eye upon me more than my own eyes upon myself.
