1. 모임의 목적 (Purpose of Church Assemblies)
For the better government
더 나은 교회 정치와
and further edification of the Church,
교회의 덕을 위하여
there ought to be such assemblies as are commonly called synods or councils.
흔히 노회나 공회로 불리는 모임들이 있어야 한다.
2. 모임의 조직과 권한 (Organization and Authority of Assemblies)
and it belongeth to the overseers and other rulers of the particular churches,
교회의 감독자들이나 개교회의 치리자들(장로)은
by virtue of their office,
그들의 직책과
and the power which Christ hath given them
교회가 그들에게 준 권한으로
for edification and not for destruction,
(교회를) 파괴하기 위한 것이 아닌 덕을 세우기 위해서
to appoint such assemblies;
그러한 모임들을 지정하고
and to convene together in them,
그들 안에서 모임을 결정하고
as often as they shall judge it expedient for the good of the church.
교회의 유익을 위해서 필요하다고 인정하는 대로 자주 소집할 책임이 있다.
3. 공의회와 협의회의 직무와 권한 (Functions and Authority of Synods and Councils)
It belongeth to synods and councils, ministerially,
공의회와 협의회는
(1) to determine controversies of faith,
신학에 대한 논쟁과
(2) and cases of conscience;
양심에 관한 문제들을 결정하고
(3) to set down rules and directions for the better ordering of the public worship of God, and government of His church;
공예배와 교회 정치가 더 질서정연하도록 규칙과 방향들을 정하며
(4) to receive complaints in cases of maladministration,
실책이 있는 경우에 불평들을 접수하며
and authoritatively to determine the same:
그와 같은 것을 결정하는 권한을 가지고 있다.
4. 공의회와 협의회의 결정의 존중과 순종 (Respect and Submission to Decisions of Synods and Councils)
if consonant to the Word of God, are to be received with reverence and submission,
말씀에 일치하는 경우, (공의회와 협의회의 결정에) 경외심과 순종으로 따라야 한다.
(1) not only for their agreement with the Word,
이는 (그 결정이) 말씀에 일치되기 때문일 뿐만 아니라
(2) but also for the power whereby they are made, as being an ordinance of God, appointed thereunto in His Word.
그 결정을 내린 권한, 즉 말씀에서 정해진 권한 때문에 그러하다.
