다윗의 현실
다윗의 사방이 막혀 있습니다.
- 원수들이 달려듭니다. 살을 먹으려 옵니다. 존재를 삼키려는 자들입니다.
"사악한 자들 곧 나의 원수, 나의 대적들이 내 살을 먹으려고 내게로 왔다가 걸려서 넘어졌도다." (2절)
- 군대가 진을 칩니다. 한 사람이 아닙니다. 조직적으로, 집단으로 옵니다.
"군대가 나를 대적하여 진을 칠지라도 전쟁이 나를 대적하여 일어날지라도." (3절)
- 거짓 증인들이 일어납니다. 내 말이 뒤틀려 나를 칩니다. 억울함이 쌓입니다.
"거짓 증인들과 잔인함을 토해 내는 자들이 일어나 나를 치려 하나이다." (12절)
- 그리고 다윗은 상상할 수 있는 가장 깊은 자리까지 내려갑니다.
"내 아버지와 어머니가 나를 버릴 때에 주께서는 나를 들어 올리시리이다." (10절)
실제로 버림받았다는 뜻이라기보다, 가장 안전해야 할 관계마저 무너지는 극단의 상황까지 포함합니다. 그 끝에서조차 하나님은 붙드신다는 선언입니다.
이름만 바꾸면 오늘 아침 내 이야기입니다. 새벽에 눈을 떴을 때 가장 먼저 떠오르는 그것. 잠들기 전까지 내려놓지 못하는 그것.
내 얼굴을 찾으라
이 현실 앞에 하나님이 먼저 말씀하십니다.
"주께서, 너희는 내 얼굴을 찾으라, 하셨을 때에 내 마음이 주께 아뢰기를, 주여, 내가 주의 얼굴을 찾으리이다, 하였나이다." (8절)
다윗이 먼저 찾아간 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 먼저 부르셨습니다. "내 얼굴을 찾으라." 임재를 향한 것은 다윗의 선택이기 전에 하나님의 명령이었습니다.
다윗은 얼굴을 구하는 것이 무엇인지 잘 알았습니다. 왕의 식탁에서 먹던 자였습니다. 왕 앞에 앉아, 왕의 얼굴을 마주하고, 말을 나누고, 함께 먹는 것. 그 특권이 무엇인지 몸으로 알았습니다.
왕의 손을 구하는 것은 도움을 구하는 것입니다. 왕의 얼굴을 구하는 것은 왕 자신을 구하는 것입니다. 왕의 식탁에서 그 얼굴을 마주한 자에게는 손이 자연스럽게 따라옵니다. 얼굴이 먼저이고, 손은 그 결과입니다. 관계가 먼저이고, 도움은 그 열매입니다.
그래서 다윗이 구한 것은 단 하나였습니다.
"내가 주께 바라던 한 가지 일 바로 그것을 구하리니 곧 내가 평생토록 주의 집에 거하여 주의 아름다움을 바라보며 그분의 성전에서 여쭙는 것이라." (4절)
탈출이 아닙니다. 승리도 아닙니다. 손이 아닙니다. 얼굴이었습니다. 임재 그것 하나였습니다.
그리고 얼굴을 구했더니 손이 따라왔습니다.
"그분께서 고난의 때에 자신의 천막 속에 나를 숨기시고 반석 위에 세우시리로다." (5절)
내가 누구를 두려워하리요
임재 안에 있을 때 두려움의 크기가 달라졌습니다.
"주는 나의 빛이요, 나의 구원이시니 내가 누구를 두려워하리요? 주는 내 생명의 힘이시니 내가 누구를 무서워하리요?" (1절)
원수가 사라진 게 아닙니다. 군대가 물러간 게 아닙니다. 빛이신 분 앞에 있으니 어둠이 설 자리가 좁아진 것입니다. 상황이 바뀐 게 아닙니다. 임재 안에서 보는 눈이 달라진 것입니다.
임재 안에 있을 때 기진하지 않았습니다.
"내가 산 자들의 땅에서 주의 선하심을 볼 줄을 믿지 아니하였으면 기진하였으리이다." (13절)
쓰러질 뻔했습니다. 그러나 임재를 붙들었기 때문에 버텼습니다. 이것은 이론이 아닙니다. 살아낸 자의 고백입니다.
그래서 시편의 끝에서 다윗은 자기 자신에게, 그리고 우리에게 명령합니다.
"주를 바라며 크게 용기를 낼지어다. 그리하면 그분께서 네 마음을 강하게 하시리라. 내가 말하노니 주를 바랄지어다." (14절)
얼굴을 구했더니 손이 따라왔듯이, 임재를 구했더니 강함이 따라옵니다.
두 번 말합니다. "내가 말하노니 주를 바랄지어다." 한 번으로는 부족합니다. 놓치면 기진하기 때문입니다. 이 말을 할 수 있는 사람은 왕의 얼굴이 실제로 작동한다는 것을 살아낸 사람입니다.
오늘 사방이 막혀 있습니까. 손이 필요합니까. 그렇다면 먼저 얼굴을 구하십시오.
주를 바라십시오. 그러면 그분께서 네 마음을 강하게 하실 것입니다.
지금 나는 무엇을 구하고 있습니까. 손입니까, 얼굴입니까.
The Reality of David
David is surrounded on every side.
- His enemies come rushing at him. They come to devour his flesh. They seek to consume him entirely.
"When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell." (v. 2)
- An army encamps against him. Not one man. An organized, collective force.
"Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident." (v. 3)
- False witnesses rise against him. His own words are twisted and used against him. The weight of injustice presses down.
"For false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty." (v. 12)
- And then David descends to the deepest place imaginable. Even those who should be the safest of all — what if they, too, were to turn away?
"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up." (v. 10)
This is not necessarily a statement of fact — it is the most extreme case David can imagine. It encompasses even the collapse of the closest, most sacred relationships. And even there, at that furthest edge, God holds him.
Change the names, and this is your story this morning. The first thing that comes to mind when you open your eyes. The thing you cannot set down before you sleep.
Seek My Face
Into this reality, God speaks first.
"When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek." (v. 8)
David did not go first. God called first. "Seek ye my face." Turning toward God's presence was not merely David's choice — it was God's command.
David knew what it meant to seek a face. He had eaten at the king's table. To sit before the king, to meet his gaze, to speak with him and share a meal — he knew in his bones what that privilege meant.
To seek a king's hand is to seek his help. To seek a king's face is to seek the king himself. When you sit at the king's table and look into his face, his hand follows naturally. The face comes first; the hand is its consequence. The relationship comes first; the provision is its fruit.
So what David sought was one thing only.
"One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple." (v. 4)
Not escape. Not victory. Not the hand. The face. The presence — that alone.
And when he sought the face, the hand followed.
"For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock." (v. 5)
Whom Shall I Fear?
In the presence of God, the weight of fear shifts.
"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (v. 1)
The enemies have not vanished. The army has not retreated. But standing before the One who is Light, darkness finds less room to stand. The circumstances have not changed. What has changed is the eyes that see them — eyes now seeing from within His presence.
In the presence of God, David did not faint.
"I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living." (v. 13)
He nearly broke. But because he held onto the presence, he held on. This is not theory. This is the testimony of a man who lived it.
And so at the end of this psalm, David speaks — to himself, and to us.
"Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD." (v. 14)
Just as seeking the face brought the hand, seeking the presence brings strength.
He says it twice. "Wait, I say, on the LORD." Once is not enough. Because it is easy to let go — and when you let go, you faint. The man who can say these words is the man who has lived long enough to know that the face of the King is real, and that it works.
Are you hemmed in on every side today? Do you need a hand? Then seek the face first.
Wait on the LORD. And he shall strengthen thine heart.
