종교의 문법은 언제나 인간이 먼저 움직이는 것입니다. 내가 하나님을 찾고, 내가 나아가고, 내가 붙드는 것. 그런데 6절은 그 방향을 완전히 뒤집습니다. 움직이는 것은 내가 아닙니다. 하나님이 먼저 나를 향해 오십니다. 그리고 그것이 내 귀환의 유일한 이유입니다.
누가, 무엇으로 쫓아오는가
"따르리니"로 번역된 이 단어의 원어는 끝까지 추격한다는 뜻입니다. 전쟁터에서 적을 쫓는 것, 포기 없이 대상을 놓지 않는 것. 그런데 시편 23편은 목자 시편입니다. 1절부터 5절까지 목자의 인도와 동행과 보호가 이미 흐르고 있습니다. 그 문맥 위에서 이 추격을 읽어야 합니다. 이것은 잡아들이는 추격이 아닙니다. 내가 있는 자리까지 찾아오시고, 나란히 걸으시고, 내가 흔들릴 때도 손을 놓지 않으시는 것 — 그 세 겹의 움직임이 하나로 압축된 단어입니다.
그 움직임에 시편 기자는 두 이름을 붙입니다. 선하심과 헤세드(חֶסֶד)입니다. 선하심은 창세기 1장 "좋았더라"의 그 단어입니다. 하나님이 찾아오실 때 가져오시는 것, 동행하시며 허락하시는 것 — 그 모든 것이 본질적으로 선하고 온전합니다. 헤세드는 언약 안에서 상대가 자격을 잃었을 때도 끝까지 지키는 신실한 사랑입니다. 내가 실패하고 돌아서도 약속을 파기하지 않으시는 것, 그 집요함이 추격이 멈추지 않는 이유입니다. 선하심이 은혜의 내용이라면, 헤세드는 은혜의 지속성입니다. 이 둘이 함께 나를 찾아오고, 동행하고, 붙들 때 — 은혜는 충분하고, 또 끊어지지 않습니다.
얼마나 오래, 어디까지 쫓아오는가
하나님이 먼저 오신다는 선언이 진짜이려면, 그 범위가 검증되어야 합니다. 시편 기자는 두 겹으로 답합니다.
첫째는 "내 생애의 모든 날"입니다.
믿음이 뜨거운 날만이 아닙니다. 실패한 날, 골짜기를 걷는 날, 하나님이 침묵하시는 것 같은 날에도 이 찾아오심은 멈추지 않습니다. 조건절이 없는 선언입니다.
둘째는 영원입니다.
원문을 직역하면 "날들의 길이"입니다. 평생이 이 땅의 전 생애라면, 영원은 그 너머를 가리킵니다. 이 두 겹이 함께 말하는 것은 하나입니다. 하나님의 주도성에는 예외도, 기한도 없습니다. 그 집요함 자체가 은혜의 주도성을 증명합니다.
그 결과, 나는 어디에 있는가
선하심과 헤세드에 평생, 영원히 이끌린 사람은 결국 어디로 향합니까. 시편 기자는 "돌아간다"이면서 동시에 "거한다"는 한 단어로 답합니다. 한 번의 귀환으로 끝나지 않습니다. 돌아간 그 자리에 머뭅니다. 인생의 방향이 하나님께로 고정되는 것입니다.
이 돌아감은 의지의 붕괴가 아닙니다. 의지의 재정렬입니다. 하나님이 찾아오시고, 동행하시고, 붙드시는 그 은혜 앞에서 내 의지가 향하던 방향이 바뀌는 것입니다. 목자가 끝까지 따라온 양이 마침내 목자 곁으로 방향을 돌리는 것 — 강제가 아니라 이끌림의 결과입니다. 그가 돌아간 곳은 여호와의 집입니다. 단순한 건물이 아닙니다. 하나님의 임재 영역, 보호와 친밀함과 관계의 중심입니다. 은혜에 이끌려 들어간 집이 곧 안식처입니다.
고백
나는 하나님을 찾아 나선 사람이 아닙니다. 하나님이 먼저 나를 향해 오셨습니다. 선하심으로 내게 베푸시고, 헤세드로 나를 놓지 않으시며, 내 생애의 모든 날 — 찾아오시고, 동행하시고, 붙드셨습니다. 그 은혜 앞에서 내 의지는 방향을 바꾸었습니다. 패배가 아니라 재정렬입니다. 나는 여호와의 집으로 돌아갔고, 거기 머뭅니다. 영원히. 하나님이 먼저 오셨기 때문입니다. 그것이 시작이자 끝입니다.
Grace That Pursues
The grammar of religion has always placed humanity first. I seek God. I draw near. I hold on. But verse 6 reverses that direction entirely. The one who moves first is not me. God comes toward me first. And that is the only reason I ever return.
Who comes, and how?
The KJV renders it "shall follow" — but the Hebrew word behind it reaches far deeper. It is the word for relentless pursuit: the kind that does not tire, does not turn back, that refuses to release its target. Yet Psalm 23 is a shepherd psalm. From verse 1 through verse 5, the shepherd's guidance, companionship, and protection have already been woven through every line. That is the context in which this pursuit must be read. This is not the chase of a soldier hunting down an enemy. It is the shepherd who travels to where the sheep is, walks alongside it, and will not loosen his grip even when it stumbles — three layers of movement compressed into a single word.
To this movement, the psalmist gives two names: goodness and hesed (חֶסֶד). The KJV translates hesed as "mercy" — a word that gestures toward it, but cannot fully contain it. Goodness is the word from Genesis 1, the word God spoke over creation: "it was good." Everything God brings when he comes, everything he permits as he walks alongside — it is all, at its core, good and whole. Hesed is the covenantal love that does not withdraw even when the other party has forfeited every claim to it. The reason the pursuit never stops is this: even when I fail and turn away, he does not cancel the promise. If goodness is the substance of grace, hesed is its constancy. When both come for me, walk with me, and hold on to me — grace is both sufficient and unbreakable.
How long, and how far?
If the claim that God comes first is to hold, its scope must be tested. The psalmist answers in two layers. The first is "all the days of my life." Not only the days when faith burns bright. On the days of failure, the days of walking through the valley, the days when God seems silent — this pursuit does not cease. There are no conditional clauses. The second layer is forever — the original text reads literally "the length of days." If a lifetime spans this side of eternity, forever reaches beyond it. Together, these two layers speak one truth: there are no exceptions to God's initiative, and no expiration date on his coming. That relentlessness is itself the proof of grace's priority.
Where does it leave me?
Where does a person end up after being pursued by goodness and hesed for a lifetime — for eternity? The psalmist answers in a single word that holds two meanings at once: to return, and to dwell. The KJV captures the second half beautifully: "I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever." It is not a one-time homecoming. He returns, and stays. The direction of a life becomes fixed toward God.
This return is not the collapse of the will. It is the reorientation of the will. Before the grace of God who came, who walked alongside, who held on — the direction of my will shifts. The sheep that the shepherd refused to abandon finally turns toward the shepherd. Not compulsion, but the result of being led. The place he returns to is the house of the Lord — not a building, but the realm of God's presence: protection, intimacy, the center of all relationship. The house he was led into is the place of rest.
Confession
I am not the one who went looking for God. God came for me first. With goodness he gave. With hesed he would not let go. All the days of my life — he came, he walked with me, he held on. Before that grace, my will found a new direction. Not defeat, but reorientation. I will dwell in the house of the Lord. Forever. Because he came first. That is where it begins, and where it ends.
