시편 목자의 저자 W. 필립 켈러(1920–1997)에 대한 소개
그는 케냐에서 태어나 아프리카 초원에서 자랐습니다. 신학교가 아니라 고원과 양 떼 사이에서 시편을 배운 사람. 그의 책 A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23(1970)은 그 현장에서 나왔습니다.
목자가 먼저 올라간다
오늘 당신이 마주할 하루가 있습니다.
그 안에 이미 알고 있는 무게들이 있을 것입니다. 풀리지 않은 것들, 짓누르는 것들, 아직 끝나지 않은 것들.
그런데 목자는, 당신이 그 하루에 들어서기 전에, 이미 거기 올라가 있습니다.
켈러는 여름 목축지를 "테이블랜드(table-land)"라고 불렀습니다. 목자는 양 떼를 올려보내기 전에 먼저 혼자 그 땅에 오릅니다. 독초를 뽑고, 웅덩이를 메우고, 위험을 살핍니다. 양이 발을 딛기 전에, 목자의 발이 먼저 그 땅을 밟습니다.

파리떼의 정체
그러나 고원에는 또 다른 위협이 있었습니다.
켈러가 직접 목격한 것입니다. 코봇파리. 이 파리는 양의 콧속에 알을 낳고, 유충이 두개골 깊숙이 파고듭니다. 양은 고통을 피하려 달리다 절벽으로 향합니다. 파리가 양을 죽이는 것이 아닙니다. 파리는 양이 스스로를 파괴하게 만듭니다.
당신의 파리떼는 무엇입니까.
단번에 쓰러뜨리지 않습니다. 다만 끊임없이 달라붙습니다. 잠들기 전에 떠오르는 걱정, 떨쳐내도 돌아오는 불안, 마음속에서 멈추지 않고 부화하는 두려움.

기름 붓기
하나님은 상황을 바꾸실 수 있는 분이십니다. 다윗을 원수의 손에서 건지셨고, 다니엘을 사자굴에서 살리셨습니다.
그러나 이 시편이 말하는 장면은 다릅니다.
켈러에 따르면, 목자는 올리브 기름과 타르와 유황을 섞어 양의 머리와 코 주변에 바릅니다. 파리가 달라붙지 못하도록. 환경을 먼저 바꾸는 것이 아니라, 양의 내면을 먼저 지키는 것입니다. 파리는 여전히 날아다닙니다. 그러나 기름을 바른 양은, 그 자리에서 고요히 풀을 뜯기 시작합니다.
하나님은 항상 상황을 먼저 바꾸시는 방식만 쓰지 않으십니다. 때로는 그 상황 한가운데서, 당신의 내면에 먼저 손을 대십니다.
불안이 더 이상 안으로 파고들지 못하도록. 두려움이 당신을 절벽으로 몰아가지 못하도록.
내 잔이 넘치나이다

그럼에도 시편 기자는 말합니다. 내 잔이 넘친다고.
히브리어 רְוָיָה(레바야)는 물을 실컷 마셔 갈증이 완전히 사라진 상태를 가리킵니다. 더 이상 불안이 나를 끌고 가지 못하는 것, 내면이 무너지지 않는 것, 파리가 날아다니는 그 자리에서 고요히 먹을 수 있는 것 — 그것이 넘침입니다.
My Cup Overflows
W. Phillip Keller (1920–1997), author of A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 (1970), was born in Kenya and raised on the African plains. Not in a seminary, but among highland pastures and sheep — that is where he learned this psalm. His book came from that ground.
The shepherd goes up first
There is a day ahead of you today.
And within it, weights you already know. Things unresolved, things pressing down, things not yet finished.
But the shepherd — before you step into that day — has already gone up ahead.
Keller called the summer grazing ground the "tableland." Before sending the flock up, the shepherd goes alone. He pulls out poisonous weeds, fills in dangerous holes, checks for threats. Before the sheep set foot there, the shepherd's feet have already walked that ground.
The place you will enter today — he has already prepared it.
The nature of the flies
But there was another threat on the highland.
Something Keller witnessed himself. The nose fly. This fly lays eggs inside the sheep's nostrils, and the larvae burrow deep into the skull. The sheep, driven mad by the pain, runs — toward the cliff. It is not the fly that kills the sheep. The fly makes the sheep destroy itself.
What are your flies?
Not something that strikes you down at once. Something that clings — relentlessly. The worry that rises before sleep, the anxiety that returns no matter how many times you shake it off, the fear that keeps hatching inside.
The enemy is outside. But what the enemy truly intends happens on the inside.
Right now, in this moment — is that what is happening within you?
The anointing
God is able to change circumstances. He delivered David from the hand of his enemies. He brought Daniel out of the lions' den.
But this psalm is describing a different scene.
According to Keller, the shepherd mixes olive oil with tar and sulfur and applies it around the sheep's head and nose — so the flies cannot land. Not changing the environment first, but protecting the sheep's inner state first. The flies are still there. But the anointed sheep begins, quietly, to graze.
God does not always work by changing the situation first. Sometimes, in the middle of that situation, he reaches toward your inner life first.
So that anxiety can no longer burrow in. So that fear can no longer drive you toward the cliff.
My cup overflows
The enemies are still there. The flies are still in the air. Nothing has changed.
And yet the psalmist says: my cup overflows.
The Hebrew רְוָיָה (revayah) means the state of having drunk deeply — thirst completely gone. Not emotional abundance. Not ease of circumstance. The state where anxiety no longer pulls you along. Where the inner life does not collapse. Where, even as the flies circle, you can eat in quiet — that is overflow.
If your cup feels empty today, this song was written for exactly that person.
Not a song sung after being filled — but a song of trust, sung from the place that is not yet full.
