양이 길을 잃는 방식
양이 길을 잃는 방식은 우리의 예상과 다릅니다. 목자에게 반항하거나 의도적으로 무리를 이탈하는 것이 아닙니다. 표류하다, 유혹에 이끌리다, 고립되다, 안주하다 — 어느 것 하나 의도 없이 길을 잃습니다.
1표류 — 풀을 따라 고개를 숙이고 한 걸음씩 이동하다 어느새 무리에서 완전히 벗어납니다. 양은 그것을 인식조차 하지 못합니다.
2유혹 — 울타리 너머에 더 좋은 풀이 보이면 틈을 찾아 빠져나갑니다. 더 좋아 보이는 것을 향한 욕구가 조용히 경계를 넘게 합니다.
3고립 — 가시덤불에 걸리거나 바위 틈에 끼어 오도 가도 못하게 됩니다. 잠깐의 부주의가 완전한 고립으로 이어집니다.
4안주 — 편안한 오목한 곳에 누웠다가 무게중심이 쏠려 혼자 일어나지 못하게 됩니다. 편안함을 찾는 것 자체가 위험이 됩니다.
결정적인 것은, 양은 자신이 길을 잃었다는 사실조차 모릅니다. 돌아와야 한다는 것을 모르니, 돌아오려는 시도조차 없습니다.
"우리는 다 양 같아서 그릇 행하여 각기 제 길로 갔거늘"
이사야 53:6 — 반란이 아닙니다. 각자의 방향으로 그냥 걸어간 것입니다.
길을 잃은 양에게 남은 것은 위험뿐입니다.
뒤집혀 가스가 차서 죽고, 포식자의 표적이 되고, 시간이 지나면 발견해도 걷지 못하게 됩니다. 소리치지도, 일어나지도, 살아남지도 못합니다.
그는 자신이 길을 잃은 줄도 모른 채, 조용히 죽어갑니다.
목자는 "자신의 이름을 위하여" 양을 찾습니다.
양이 스스로 돌아올 수 없다면, 질문은 하나로 좁혀집니다. 목자는 왜 찾아오는가. 양의 자격 때문인가. 아닙니다. 양은 무지각하게 표류했고, 아무것도 할 수 없는 상태입니다. 그렇다면 그 이유는 양이 아닌 다른 곳에 있어야 합니다.
다윗은 그 이유를 여기에 놓습니다.
히브리어에서 이름은 단순한 호칭이 아닙니다. 그 존재의 성품, 평판, 그리고 무엇보다 약속의 총체입니다. 하나님이 자신의 이름을 위하여 행동하신다는 것은, 그분이 이름을 걸고 선포하신 것을 반드시 이루신다는 뜻입니다. 그것은 언약입니다.
에스겔 34장에서 하나님은 선포하십니다. "
"잃어버린 것을 내가 찾으며 쫓긴 것을 내가 돌아오게 하며 상한 것을 내가 싸매어 주며"
에스겔 34:16
이것은 감정의 표현이 아닙니다. 이름을 걸고 하신 언약입니다. 그 이름이 변하지 않는 한 찾아오심도 변하지 않습니다. 얼마나 멀리 표류했든, 얼마나 오래 뒤집혀 있었든, 양의 상태는 그 언약을 취소할 수 없습니다.
목자는 밤이 와도, 길이 험해도. 길 잃은 양을 찾아 떠납니다. 뒤집혀 죽어가는 양을 발견하면, 말없이 일으켜 어깨에 멥니다. 그것이 이름을 위한 행동입니다.
그러므로 회복은 어디서 오는가
"내 혼을 회복시키시며." 회복시키신다는 것은 잘못된 자를 벌하는 것이 아니라, 원래 있어야 할 자리로 돌이키신다는 뜻입니다. 스스로 돌아올 수 없었던 양을, 목자가 찾아와 돌이키십니다.
다윗은 이것을 이론으로만 알지 않았습니다. 밧세바 사건 이후 시편 51편에서 그는 이 논리 그대로 하나님께 나아갑니다. "주의 인자와 긍휼을 따라 내 죄를 지워 주소서." 자신의 상태를 근거로 삼지 않고, 주님이 어떤 분이신지를 근거로 간구합니다.
"여호와여 주의 이름을 위하여 나의 죄악을 사하소서 내 죄가 큼이니이다"
시편 25:11
죄가 크다는 것이 거절의 이유가 아닙니다. 오히려 그 이름이 필요한 이유가 됩니다.
인간의 공로는 제거됩니다. 신실함도 조건이 아닙니다. 그리고 여기서 역설이 드러납니다. 양에게 자격이 있었다면, 그것은 목자의 이름이 드러나는 장면이 아닙니다. 아무것도 할 수 없는 양을 찾아오실 때, 비로소 그 이름의 진짜 무게가 보입니다. 양의 무력함이 클수록, 찾아오심은 더 선명하게 그 이름을 증언합니다.
양은 스스로 돌아오지 못합니다. 길을 잃었다는 것도, 죽어가고 있다는 것도 모릅니다. 그런데 목자가 찾아오십니다.
양의 자격 때문이 아니라, 이름을 걸고 하신 언약 때문에.
그 무력한 양을 찾아오심으로,
그 이름은 비로소 온전히 드러납니다.
그리고 우리는, 그 이름으로만 살아남습니다.
First: The sheep cannot find its own way back
The way a sheep gets lost is not what we would expect. It does not rebel against the shepherd or deliberately forsake the flock. It drifteth away, it is drawn by temptation, it becometh trapped, it settleth into comfort — and in every case, the loss is entirely without intent.
1. Drift — Head bowed to the grass, moving one step at a time, until it hath wandered wholly from the flock. The sheep perceiveth it not.
2. Temptation — Better pasture seen beyond the fold, it seeketh a gap and passeth through. The desire for something more doth quietly carry it past the boundary.
3. Isolation — Caught in the thorns or fast between the rocks, it can neither go forward nor return. A moment's carelessness leadeth to utter entrapment.
4. Complacency — Lying down in a comfortable hollow, the weight of its own body rolleth it upon its back, and it cannot rise. The seeking of ease becometh the snare.
What is most telling is this: the sheep knoweth not that it is lost. It knoweth not that it must return, and so it maketh no attempt to do so.
"All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way."
Isaiah 53:6 (KJV) — Not rebellion. Simply walking, each to his own way.
What remaineth for the lost sheep is danger alone. It dieth of bloat, it becometh prey to the wolf and the lion, and if found too late, it may never walk again. It cannot cry out, it cannot rise, it cannot save itself.
It knoweth not that it is lost. And so it perisheth quietly, without a sound.
Salvation must come from without.
Second: Wherefore doth the shepherd come at all?
If the sheep cannot return of itself, the question is narrowed to one: wherefore doth the shepherd come? Is it for the sheep's deserving? Nay. The sheep hath drifted away in ignorance and can do nothing to help itself. If the shepherd cometh notwithstanding, the reason must lie somewhere other than in the sheep.
David layeth the reason here:
"For his name's sake."
In the Hebrew tongue, a name is not merely a title. It is the whole of a man's character, his reputation, and above all, his word and his promise. When God acteth for his name's sake, it signifieth that he will bring to pass whatsoever he hath declared in that name. It is a covenant.
"I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken."
Ezekiel 34:16 (KJV)
This is no mere expression of feeling. It is a covenant sworn upon the weight of his name. So long as that name changeth not, neither shall his coming cease. However far the sheep hath strayed, however long it hath lain helpless — its condition cannot make void the covenant.
The shepherd leaveth the ninety and nine. Through the night, over rough ground. And when at last he findeth the sheep — cast down and dying — he lifteth it without a word and beareth it upon his shoulders.
That is what it is to act for the sake of a name.
Third: Whence, then, doth restoration come?
"He restoreth my soul." To restore is not to visit punishment upon the one who went astray. It is to bring back the one who belongeth. The sheep that could not return of itself — the shepherd cometh and restoreth it.
David knew this not in theory alone. After the matter of Bathsheba, he drew nigh unto God in Psalm 51 by this very reasoning: "According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions." He standeth not upon his own righteousness. He standeth upon who the LORD is.
"For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great."
Psalm 25:11 (KJV) — The greatness of the iniquity is not the ground of refusal. It is the very reason the name is needed.
The works of man are removed from the reckoning. Faithfulness is not required as a condition. And here a paradox is made manifest: had the sheep deserved to be restored, it would not be a moment wherein the shepherd's name is revealed. It is only when the shepherd cometh for the one who hath nothing — who can do nothing — that the true weight of that name is seen. The deeper the helplessness, the more plainly doth the coming bear witness to the name.
