시편 21편은 왕의 감사 시편입니다. 시편 20편이 전쟁을 앞두고 왕을 위해 드린 백성의 기도라면, 21편은 그 응답 이후 드리는 감사와 찬양입니다.

개요

시편 21편은 세 흐름으로 구성됩니다.

• 1-5절 — 하나님이 이미 베푸신 은혜에 대한 감사

전쟁 후 다윗은 하나님께서 베푸신 것들을 하나씩 열거합니다. 마음의 소원을 들으심, 생명을 주심, 순금 왕관과 영광을 더하심. 왕이 누리는 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 왔음을 고백합니다.

• 6-10절— 하나님을 신뢰하는 왕의 고백과 원수의 심판 선언

은혜를 받은 왕은 흔들리지 않습니다. 그 견고함의 근거는 자신의 능력이 아니라 지극히 높으신 이의 긍휼입니다. 그리고 하나님의 심판이 원수들 위에 임할 것을 선언합니다.

• 11-13절 — 원수의 패배 확인과 찬양으로의 결론

원수들의 계략은 실패로 돌아갑니다. 시편은 심판의 선언으로 끝나지 않고 반드시 하나님을 높이는 찬양으로 귀결됩니다.

 

마음의 갈망, 입술의 부르짖음 — 하나님은 듣고 계십니다

서론

다윗은 전쟁터에서 기도했습니다. 생사가 걸린 자리에서 그는 하나님 앞에 마음을 쏟았고 입술로 간청했습니다.

그리고 돌아와 이렇게 고백합니다. 하나님이 들으셨다. 단 한 번도 거절하지 않으셨다.

기도하는 사람에게 가장 고통스러운 순간이 있습니다.

분명히 기도했습니다. 오래, 간절히 기도했습니다. 그런데 하늘이 닫힌 것 같습니다. 아무것도 달라지지 않은 것 같습니다.

그 침묵이 길어질수록 기도는 점점 무거워집니다.

"하나님이 내 기도를 듣고 계신 걸까."

"내 기도가 닿기는 하는 걸까."

"나는 계속 기도해야 하는 걸까."

그 질문을 붙들고 오늘 이 자리에 앉아 있는 분이 있다면, 본문이 당신에게 두 가지를 말합니다.

첫 번째 — 하나님은 마음의 소원을 들으십니다

תַּאֲוַת לִבּוֹ (ta'avat libbo)

"그의 심장이 갈망하던 것을 주께서 그에게 주셨으며"

히브리어 ta'avah 는 단순한 바람이 아닙니다. 존재의 깊은 곳에서 올라오는 갈망, 열망, 욕구입니다. 아직 언어가 되지 못한 것. 말로 꺼내기도 전에 심장 안에서 끓고 있는 것.

하나님이 읽으시는 곳은 לֵב (lev) 입니다. 히브리인에게 lev는 감정만의 자리가 아닙니다. 생각하고, 결단하고, 느끼는 인격 전체가 하나로 모이는 중심입니다.

여기서 이것을 붙잡으십시오.

하나님은 당신이 입을 열기 전에 이미 당신의 lev 안을 읽고 계십니다.

무릎을 꿇지 못한 날에도. 말이 나오지 않아 눈물만 흘린 새벽에도. 기도라고 부르기도 민망한 한숨뿐이었던 그 순간에도.

하나님은 그 심장 안의 갈망을 이미 받으셨습니다.

기도는 무릎에서 시작되지 않습니다. 심장에서 시작됩니다. 그리고 하나님은 그 심장을 당신보다 먼저, 당신보다 깊이 읽고 계십니다.

두 번째 — 하나님은 입술의 간청도 들으십니다

אֶרֶשֶׁת שְׂפָתָיו (areshet sefatav)

"그의 입술의 간청을 주께서 결코 막지 아니하셨나이다"

이번엔 말이 된 기도입니다. 생각이 정리되고, 마음이 모아지고, 드디어 입술 밖으로 나온 간청.

본문은 이것을 בַּל־מָנַע (bal-mana') 로 선언합니다. 결코, 단 한 번도, 막지 않으셨다.

בַּל (bal) 은 히브리어에서 가장 강한 부정입니다. "가끔은 들으셨다"가 아닙니다. "대부분은 받으셨다"가 아닙니다. 단 한 번도, 어느 순간도, 예외 없이 당신의 입술의 기도를 막으신 적이 없다는 선언입니다.

당신이 수년째 드리고 있는 그 기도, 같은 말을 반복하는 것 같아 스스로도 지쳐버린 그 간청, 너무 작아서 꺼내기 부끄러웠던 그 속삭임 —

하나님은 그것을 단 한 번도 거절하신 적이 없습니다.

응답이 보이지 않는다고 해서 하나님이 듣지 않으신 것이 아닙니다. 본문은 분명히 말합니다. 단 한 번도, 막으신 적이 없다고.

결론 — 어느 순간에도

다윗이 전쟁터에서 드린 기도를 하나님은 하나도 놓치지 않으셨습니다.

마음 깊은 곳의 갈망도. 입술로 쏟아낸 간청도. 하나님은 그 모두를 받으셨습니다.

그리고 그 하나님이 오늘 당신의 기도 앞에도 동일하게 서 계십니다.

하나님은 마음의 소원을 들으십니다. 말이 되기 전, 무릎을 꿇기 전, 심장 안에서 갈망하는 그것을 이미 받으십니다.

하나님은 입술의 간청도 들으십니다. 더듬거리며 꺼낸 기도, 오래되어 식어버린 것 같은 간청조차 단 한 번도 막지 않으셨습니다.

하나님은 어느 순간에도 당신의 기도를 듣고 계십니다.

기도가 언어가 되기 전에도. 기도가 언어가 된 후에도. 응답이 보이지 않는 그 긴 침묵 속에서도.

하나님은 단 한 순간도 당신의 기도를 놓치신 적이 없습니다.

סֶּלָה — 셀라

멈추어 생각해 보십시오. 

다윗이 전쟁터에서 드린 기도가 들려졌다면, 오늘 당신이 드리는 기도도 들려지고 있습니다.

당신이 오늘 드린 기도, 아직 응답받지 못한 그 간청, 기도라고 부르기도 어려웠던 그 갈망 —

하나님은 그것을 이미 받으셨습니다. 

당신의 심장이 갈망하는 그 순간, 하나님은 이미 듣고 계십니다.

당신의 입술이 간청하는 그 순간, 하나님은 단 하나도 흘리지 않으십니다.

어느 순간에도, 하나님은 당신의 기도를 듣고 계십니다.

셀라 — 지금 이 자리에서 그분께 나아가십시오.

 

 

Background

Psalm 21 is a psalm of royal thanksgiving. If Psalm 20 is the people's prayer for their king on the eve of battle, Psalm 21 is the praise and gratitude offered after the answer came.

Overview

Psalm 21 flows in three movements.

Verses 1-5 — Thanksgiving for the grace God has already given After the battle, David enumerates what God has done — hearing his heart's desire, giving him life, setting a crown of pure gold upon his head. Everything the king possesses has come from God alone.

Verses 6-10 — The king's confession of trust and the declaration of judgment upon enemies The king who has received grace cannot be shaken. The ground of his stability is not his own strength but the mercy of the Most High. He declares that God's judgment will fall upon his enemies.

Verses 11-13 — The defeat of enemies confirmed and the conclusion in praise The schemes of the enemies come to nothing. The psalm does not end in judgment — it must always arrive at the praise of God.

 

"The Heart's Longing, the Lips' Cry — God Is Listening"

 

Introduction

David prayed on the battlefield. In a place where life and death hung in the balance, he poured out his heart before God and cried out with his lips.

And returning, he confesses: God heard. Not once did He withhold.

There is a moment that is hardest for those who pray.

You have prayed. You have prayed long, and with everything in you. Yet the heavens feel sealed. Nothing seems to have changed.

The longer the silence stretches, the heavier prayer becomes.

"Is God hearing my prayer?" "Is it reaching Him at all?" "Should I even keep praying?"

If you are sitting here today holding that question, the text has two things to say to you.

First — God Hears the Desire of the Heart

תַּאֲוַת לִבּוֹ (ta'avat libbo)

"Thou hast given him his heart's desire" (Psalm 21:2, KJV)

The Hebrew ta'avah is not a simple wish. It is longing, yearning, deep desire — rising from the very depths of a person's being. Something not yet formed into words. Something burning inside the chest before the lips have ever opened.

What God reads is לֵב (lev). To the Hebrew mind, lev is not merely the seat of emotion. It is the center where intellect, will, and feeling converge — the core of the whole person.

Hold onto this.

Before you open your mouth, before you find the words, God is already reading what is in your lev.

On the days you could not kneel. In the early hours when only tears came and no words followed. In the moments when all you had was a sigh too faint to call a prayer —

God had already received the longing within that heart.

Prayer does not begin at the knees. It begins in the heart. And God reads that heart before you do, and deeper than you ever can.

Second — God Hears the Request of the Lips

אֶרֶשֶׁת שְׂפָתָיו (areshet sefatav)

"and hast not withholden the request of his lips" (Psalm 21:2, KJV)

Now it is prayer that has become words. Thoughts gathered, heart composed, and at last — the petition spoken aloud.

The text declares this with בַּל־מָנַע (bal-mana'). Not withheld. Not once. Not ever.

בַּל (bal) is the strongest negation in Hebrew. Not "He heard it most of the time." Not "He usually let it through." Not once, in any moment, without a single exception — has He ever withheld the prayer of your lips.

The prayer you have been bringing for years. The petition you have repeated so many times you have grown weary of your own words. The whisper too small and too ashamed to speak aloud —

God has not withheld it. Not once.

The absence of a visible answer does not mean God has not heard. The text is clear: Not once. Not ever. He has never withheld.

Conclusion — In Every Moment

Not one of the prayers David offered on the battlefield did God allow to fall unheard.

The longing deep within his heart. The petition poured out from his lips. God received them all.

And that same God stands before your prayers today in exactly the same way.

God hears the desire of the heart. Before it becomes words, before you kneel, He has already received the longing within you.

God hears the request of the lips. The halting, stumbling petition, the prayer that feels cold and worn — He has never withheld it. Not once.

God hears your prayer in every moment.

Before prayer finds its words. After prayer has found its words. Through the long silence where no answer seems to come.

God has not missed your prayer. Not for a single moment.

 

סֶּלָה — Selah

Be still and consider.

If the prayer David offered on the battlefield was heard, then the prayer you are offering today is being heard.

The prayer you brought today. The petition still waiting for its answer. The longing you could barely call a prayer —

God has already received it.

In the moment your heart longs — God is already listening.

In the moment your lips cry out — God withholds nothing.

In every moment, God hears your prayer.

Selah — Come before Him now, in this very place.
