여러분, 역사를 움직이는 분은 누구라고 생각하십니까?
예레미야 46장부터 51장까지는 수많은 나라가 무너지고 사라지는 이야기가 숨 가쁘게 이어집니다. 처음 이 말씀을 대하면 우리는 이런 질문을 품게 됩니다.
“왜 이 고대 국가들의 멸망 이야기가 이렇게 길게 이어지는 걸까?”
“이 먼 나라 이야기가 오늘을 사는 우리와 무슨 상관이 있을까?”
그러나 하나님은 단순히 과거의 역사를 기록하시는 분이 아닙니다.
이 말씀에서 우리는 두 가지를 배울 수 있습니다.
첫째, 하나님은 남유다 주변 나라들을 심판하시는 근거를 말씀해 주십니다. 그리고 그 심판의 근거는 오늘을 사는 우리에게도 그대로 적용됩니다.
둘째, 하나님은 역사를 주관하시는 분이라는 사실입니다.
오늘 우리는 이 말씀을 통해, 하나님을 신뢰하는 데 방해가 되는 것이 무엇인지를 함께 살펴보려 합니다. 역사의 주관자이신 하나님께서 오늘 이 역사도 다스리심을 믿을 때, 우리의 믿음의 눈이 열리고 가슴이 펴질 수 있기를 소망합니다.
1. 인간이 의지하는 것들의 붕괴
예레미야 46장부터 51장에서 하나님은 선지자 예레미야를 통해 이스라엘 주변 나라들에 대한 심판을 선언하십니다. 그런데 그 심판의 이유는 단순히 ‘죄’가 아닙니다. 하나님은 그들이 무엇을 붙들고 살았는지를 낱낱이 드러내십니다.
애굽은 ‘힘’을 의지했습니다.
“나는 나일 강의 넘침 같겠고 땅을 덮으리라”(렘 46:8)
그러나 하나님은 말씀하십니다.
“그는 시끄러운 소리일 뿐이라”(렘 46:17)
세상을 덮을 것 같던 힘도 하나님 앞에서는 의미 없는 소음으로 끝납니다.
블레셋은 ‘사람’을 의지했습니다.
“돕는 자가 다 끊어지리라”(렘 47:4)
사람을 붙들면, 그 사람이 끊어질 때 함께 무너집니다.
모압은 ‘재물과 안일함’을 의지했습니다.
“네가 네 보물을 의지하므로”(렘 48:7)
“평안하고 가만히 있었도다”(렘 48:11)
문제없는 삶, 흔들림 없는 상태가 오히려 무너짐의 이유가 됩니다.
암몬은 ‘안전지대’를 의지했습니다.
“누가 내게 오리요”(렘 49:4)
그러나 아무리 깊이 숨어도 하나님의 손을 피할 수 없습니다.
에돔은 ‘지혜’를 의지했습니다.
“데만에 다시는 지혜가 없게 되었느냐?”(렘 49:7)
지혜가 사라지면 남는 것은 아무것도 없습니다.
다메섹은 ‘명성’을 의지했습니다.
“어찌하여 찬송의 성읍… 버림을 받았는고”(렘 49:25)
하나님 없는 명성은 위기의 때에 아무 힘이 없습니다.
하솔은 ‘고립된 평안’을 의지했습니다.
“성문이나 문빗장이 없이 홀로 사는 그 민족”(렘 49:31)
안일함은 안전이 아니라 취약함이 됩니다.
엘람은 ‘능력’을 의지했습니다.
“엘람의 으뜸가는 활을 꺾으리라”(렘 49:35)
가장 강한 무기도 하나님 앞에서는 무력합니다.
바벨론은 ‘성공’을 의지했습니다.
“그가 여호와를 향하여 교만하였음이라”(렘 50:29)
“재물이 많은 자여 네 종말이 이르렀도다”(렘 51:13)
가장 성공한 제국이 가장 확실하게 무너집니다.
이 본문이 우리에게 던지는 질문은 단순합니다.
“당신은 지금 무엇을 의지하고 있습니까?”
힘, 사람, 돈, 안정, 환경, 지혜, 명성, 능력, 성공…
이 모든 것은 결국 무너질 수 있는 것들입니다.
하나님은 그것들을 거두어 가심으로, 우리가 진정 무엇을 붙들고 살았는지를 드러내십니다.
2. 역사를 다스리시는 하나님
바벨론은 하나님의 도구
그렇다면 모든 나라 위에는 누가 계십니까?
바로 역사를 주관하시는 하나님이십니다.
바벨론조차 하나님의 도구였습니다.
“너는 나의 철퇴요 전쟁 무기라”(렘 51:20)
당대 최강의 제국 바벨론도 역사의 주인이 아니었습니다.
그들은 스스로 세상을 움직인다고 여겼지만, 하나님의 손에 들린 도구였을 뿐입니다.
그러나 하나님은 도구도 심판하십니다.
“그들의 모든 악을 내가 갚으리라”(렘 51:24)
하나님은 바벨론을 사용하셨지만 그대로 두지 않으셨습니다.
교만과 잔혹함이 가득 찼을 때, 하나님은 또 다른 민족을 일으켜 바벨론을 무너뜨리셨습니다.
스가랴의 뿔과 목수 환상
특히 이 원리는 스가랴의 환상에서 더욱 선명하게 드러납니다.
선지자 스가랴는 이스라엘을 흩어버린 네 개의 뿔을 봅니다.
그런데 이어서 하나님은 네 명의 대장장이를 보여주십니다.
이 대장장이들은 그 뿔들을 쳐서 꺾기 위해 온 자들입니다.
이 환상이 무엇을 말해줍니까?
하나님은 한 나라를 들어 사용하셔서 심판하시고,
또 다른 세력을 일으켜 그 나라를 다시 꺾으십니다.
즉, 하나님은 단순히 역사를 “사용”하시는 분이 아니라
그 사용하신 도구까지도 다시 다스리시는 분이십니다.
바벨론을 심판하시기 위해 메데를 일으키시는 하나님
왕의 마음까지도 하나님이 움직이십니다.
“여호와께서 메대 왕들의 마음을 충동하사”(렘 51:11)
전쟁, 정치, 제국의 흐름—
그 모든 것 뒤에는 보이지 않지만 분명한 하나님의 주권이 있습니다.
나가며: 시야를 넓히십시오
성도 여러분, 우리는 늘 눈앞의 문제를 봅니다.
감당하기 어려운 현실, 우리를 흔드는 사건들.
그래서 우리의 시야는 점점 좁아집니다.
그러나 하나님은 말씀하십니다.
“너의 인생만 보지 말고, 내가 이루어 가는 역사를 보라.”
하나님은 열방의 흥망을 주관하시는 분입니다.
제국을 세우시고, 제국을 무너뜨리시며, 역사의 흐름을 이끌어 가시는 분입니다.
그리고 바로 그 하나님이
지금도 여러분의 삶을 붙들고 계십니다.
당신을 위협하는 ‘바벨론’은
당신 인생의 주인이 아닙니다.
그것은 하나님의 손에 들린 도구일 뿐입니다.
그러므로 이제 그 좁아진 시야에서 벗어나십시오.
당신의 문제를 하나님의 크신 역사 속에 놓고 보십시오.
내 인생의 작은 파도가 아니라,
하나님이 움직이시는 거대한 바다를 바라보십시오.
그때 우리는 깨닫게 됩니다.
“내가 붙들고 있는 것이 아니라, 하나님이 나를 붙들고 계시는구나.”
이제 두려워하지 마십시오.
가슴을 펴십시오.
역사를 움직이시는 하나님이
지금도 당신의 삶을 이끌어 가고 계십니다
Everyone, who do you think moves history?
From Jeremiah chapters 46 to 51, we see a rapid succession of nations collapsing and disappearing. When we first encounter this passage, we naturally ask:
“Why does the story of these ancient nations’ destruction go on for so long?”
“What does this distant history have to do with us today?”
However, God is not merely recording past history.
Through this passage, we learn two things.
First, God reveals the basis on which He judges the nations surrounding Judah—and that same standard still applies to us today.
Second, God is the One who governs history.
Today, through this Word, we want to examine what hinders us from trusting God. As we believe that the God who rules history is still reigning today, may our eyes of faith be opened and our hearts strengthened.
1. The Collapse of What Humans Rely On
In Jeremiah 46–51, God declares judgment on the nations surrounding Israel through the prophet Jeremiah. But the reason for judgment is not simply “sin.” God exposes what they depended on.
Egypt relied on “power.”
“I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.” (Jer. 46:8, KJV)
But God declares:
“They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath passed the time appointed.” (Jer. 46:17, KJV)
What seemed like overwhelming power ends as meaningless noise before God.
Philistia relied on “people.”
“…to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth…” (Jer. 47:4, KJV)
If you rely on people, when they are cut off, you fall with them.
Moab relied on “wealth and ease.”
“Because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures…” (Jer. 48:7, KJV)
“Moab hath been at ease from his youth…” (Jer. 48:11, KJV)
A life without disturbance—what seems like stability—can become the very reason for collapse.
Ammon relied on a “secure place.”
“…Who shall come unto me?” (Jer. 49:4, KJV)
But no one can hide from the hand of God.
Edom relied on “wisdom.”
“Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent?” (Jer. 49:7, KJV)
When wisdom disappears, nothing remains.
Damascus relied on “reputation.”
“How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!” (Jer. 49:25, KJV)
Fame without God offers no protection in crisis.
Hazor relied on “isolated peace.”
“…which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.” (Jer. 49:31, KJV)
What seemed like safety becomes vulnerability.
Elam relied on “ability.”
“And upon Elam will I bring the four winds…” (Jer. 49:36, KJV)
Even the strongest weapons are nothing before God.
Babylon relied on “success.”
“…she hath been proud against the LORD…” (Jer. 50:29, KJV)
“O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come…” (Jer. 51:13, KJV)
The most successful empire falls most completely.
This passage asks us a simple question:
“What are you relying on right now?”
Power, people, money, stability, environment, wisdom, reputation, ability, success—
all of these can collapse.
God removes them to reveal what we have truly been holding onto.
2. The God Who Rules History
Then who stands above all nations?
It is God, the One who governs history.
Even Babylon was God’s instrument:
“Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war…” (Jer. 51:20, KJV)
The greatest empire of its time was not the master of history.
It was merely a tool in God’s hand.
But God also judges His tools:
“And I will render unto Babylon… all their evil…” (Jer. 51:24, KJV)
God used Babylon, but did not leave it unjudged.
When it became proud and cruel, God raised another nation to destroy it.
God not only uses, but also rules over what He uses.
This principle is even more clearly revealed in the vision of Zechariah.
The prophet Zechariah saw four horns that scattered Israel.
Then God showed him four craftsmen.
These craftsmen came to terrify and cast down those horns.
What does this mean?
God raises one nation to execute judgment,
and then raises another to bring that nation down.
In other words, God does not merely “use” history—
He also rules over the very instruments He uses.
Even the hearts of kings are moved by God:
“The LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes…” (Jer. 51:11, KJV)
Wars, politics, the rise and fall of empires—
behind all of it is the unseen but absolute sovereignty of God.
Conclusion: Broaden Your Vision
Beloved, we tend to focus only on the problems right in front of us—
overwhelming situations, shaking circumstances.
And our vision becomes narrow.
But God says:
“Do not look only at your life—look at the history I am accomplishing.”
God governs the rise and fall of nations.
He establishes kingdoms and brings them down.
And that same God
is holding your life even now.
The “Babylon” that threatens you
is not the master of your life.
It is only a tool in God’s hand.
So step out of that narrow vision.
Place your problems within the greater story of God’s history.
Do not look at the small waves of your life,
but at the vast ocean God is moving.
Then we will realize:
“It is not that I am holding on to God, but that God is holding on to me.”
Do not be afraid.
Lift up your head.
The God who moves history
is still leading your life today.
