역사를 이해하지 못하면 하나님의 부르심을 오해하게 됩니다. 기원전 605년, 유브라데 강가에서 벌어진 갈그미스 전투는 고대 근동의 판도를 완전히 뒤집어 놓았습니다. 애굽은 몰락하고 바벨론이 새로운 패권으로 부상했습니다.

이 사건은 단순한 국제 정세의 변화가 아니었습니다. 하나님께서 오래전부터 선포하신 심판이 이제 집행 단계에 들어갔다는 신호였습니다. 그때 하나님은 이렇게 선언하십니다.

“보라 나는 내가 세운 것을 내가 헐기도 하며 심은 것을 내가 뽑기도 하나니…” (렘 45:4)

• 지금은 쌓는 시대가 아니라 무너지는 시대입니다.

• 심는 시대가 아니라 뽑히는 시대입니다.

하나님께서 직접 역사를 해체하고 계시는 이 전환점에, 하나님은 한 사람을 부르십니다. 그가 바로 바룩입니다.

2. 준비된 사람: 전시(戰時)에 투입된 엘리트

바룩은 평화로운 시대에 성공하기 위해 준비된 사람이 아니었습니다. 그는 무너지는 시대 속에서 진리를 기록하기 위해 투입된 전시의 기록자였습니다. 그의 배경은 매우 화려합니다.

• 형제 스라야: 왕의 행차를 총괄하는 고위 관료 (렘 51:59)

• 조부 마아세야: 예루살렘의 유력 인물로 추정 (대하 34:8)

• 바룩 자신: 당대 최고 수준의 교육을 받은 전문 서기관 (렘 36:4)

오늘날로 말하면, 명문가 출신 엘리트 지식인이 안정된 출세의 길을 버리고 국가 반역자로 낙인찍힌 선지자 예레미야의 곁에 선 것입니다. 그 순간부터 그의 인생은 바뀝니다.

1. 기록한 말씀이 왕 앞에서 불태워지고 (렘 36:23)

2. 그는 수배자가 되어 도망치는 삶을 살게 됩니다 (렘 36:26)

하나님은 이 시대 가장 뛰어난 펜을 가진 사람을 영광의 기록이 아니라 심판의 기록에 사용하셨습니다.

3. 바룩의 절망: 무너진 삶의 자리

이 길을 따라간 바룩에게 돌아온 것은 성공이 아니었습니다. 오히려 철저한 붕괴였습니다. 그는 절규합니다.

“화로다 나여… 나는 나의 탄식으로 피곤하여 평안(메누하)을 찾지 못하도다” (렘 45:3)

여기서 ‘메누하(מְנוּחָה)’는 단순한 마음의 평안(샬롬)이 아닙니다. 이것은 “내가 여기서 살아도 된다”는 삶의 자리, 존재의 기반을 의미합니다. 바룩은 지금 그것을 잃어버렸습니다.

• 사회적 지위 / 가문의 미래 / 안전한 삶의 기반

모든 것이 무너졌습니다. 그의 탄식은 단순한 욕심의 표현이 아닙니다. 그것은 신앙을 따라가다가 삶의 터전을 잃어버린 사람의 고통입니다. 그러나 동시에, 그의 깊은 곳에는 아직 내려놓지 못한 기대도 남아 있었습니다.

4. 하나님의 질문: 누구를 위한 큰 일인가

그때 하나님이 바룩에게 질문하십니다.

“네가 너를 위하여 큰 일들을 찾느냐? 그것들을 찾지 말라” (렘 45:5)

이 말씀은 바룩의 중심을 꿰뚫습니다. 그는 하나님을 섬기고 있었지만, 마음 한편에서는 여전히 자신을 위한 **‘큰 일들’(게돌로트, גְּדֹלוֹ트)**을 기대하고 있었습니다. (가문의 회복, 안정된 자리, 의미 있는 성공 등)

하나님은 그것을 끊어내십니다. 지금은 “크게 되는 시대”가 아니라 “살아남는 시대”이기 때문입니다. 불타는 집 안에서 자기 방을 꾸미는 것은 의미가 없습니다. 하나님이 이미 허물기로 하신 것을 붙잡고 있는 우리의 손을 내려놓아야 합니다.

5. 하나님의 약속: 전리품 같은 생명

하나님은 바룩에게 큰 성공을 약속하지 않으십니다. 대신 이렇게 말씀하십니다.

“내가 네 생명을 모든 곳에서 네게 탈취물로 주리라” (렘 45:5)

‘탈취물(솰랄, שָׁלָל)’은 전쟁에서 겨우 건져낸 전리품입니다. 이것은 번영의 약속이 아니라 생존의 약속입니다. 그러나 붕괴의 시대에는 이것이 가장 큰 은혜입니다.

• 무너지지 않는 자리보다 살아남는 생명이 더 귀합니다.

• 하나님이 붙들고 계신 생명, 그 자체가 은혜입니다.

6. 결론: 우리는 무엇을 붙들고 있는가

바룩은 결국 선택해야 했습니다. 세상의 안식인가, 하나님의 사명인가. 그는 안식을 내려놓고 사명을 붙들었습니다. 세상적으로 보면 실패처럼 보일 수 있지만, 하나님께서 보실 때 그의 인생은 실패가 아니었습니다. 하나님의 사명을 끝까지 붙들고 있었기 때문입니다.

• 진정한 성공: 많이 이루는 것이 아니라 하나님이 맡기신 것을 놓지 않는 것

• 진정한 복: 편안한 자리에 있는 것이 아니라 하나님의 손 안에 붙들려 있는 것

우리는 지금 결코 안전하지 않은 세상, 언젠가 반드시 무너지고 불타 없어질 세상 속에서 살아가고 있습니다. 이 시대에 우리에게 중요한 질문은 이것입니다.

1. 나는 이 땅에서 ‘큰 일’을 이루려 하고 있는가?

2. 아니면 하나님이 내게 맡기신 ‘사명’을 붙들고 있는가?

하나님은 오늘도 불편하고, 힘들고, 때로는 낙심되는 자리에서 바룩을 찾아오셨던 것처럼 우리를 찾아오십니다. 그러므로 우리는 큰 일을 이루는 인생이 아니라, 하나님을 놓치지 않는 인생을 살아야 합니다. 붕괴의 시대 속에서 끝까지 하나님의 말씀을 붙들고, 그 사명을 따라 살아가는 사람, 그 사람이 참으로 복 있는 사람입니다.

 

Seekest Thou Great Things for Thyself?

1. A Turning Point in History: A Time when God Breaks Down

If we do not understand history, we will misunderstand God’s calling. In 605 B.C., the Battle of Carchemish fought on the banks of the Euphrates completely overturned the landscape of the ancient Near East. Egypt fell, and Babylon emerged as the new superpower.

This event was not merely a shift in international politics. It was a signal that the judgment God had long proclaimed was now entering the stage of execution. At that moment, the Lord declared:

“Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will pluck up, even this whole land.” (Jeremiah 45:4, KJV)

• Now is not a time of building, but a time of breaking down.

• Now is not a time of planting, but a time of plucking up.

At this turning point where God Himself is deconstructing history, He calls one man. That man is Baruch.

2. A Prepared Man: An Elite Deployed in Wartime

Baruch was not a man prepared to succeed in a time of peace. He was a wartime scribe deployed to record the truth amidst a collapsing era. His background was highly prestigious:

• Brother, Seraiah: A high-ranking official, a quiet prince [quartermaster] in charge of the king’s travel (Jeremiah 51:59).

• Grandfather, Maaseiah: Presumed to be a prominent figure, the governor of the city (2 Chronicles 34:8).

• Baruch himself: A professional scribe who received the highest level of education of his time (Jeremiah 36:4).

In modern terms, an elite intellectual from a noble family abandoned a stable path to success to stand beside the prophet Jeremiah, who was branded a traitor to the state. From that moment, his life changed:

1. The words he recorded were cut and burned before the king (Jeremiah 36:23).

2. He became a wanted man, living a life of a fugitive (Jeremiah 36:26).

God used the man with the most brilliant pen of that era—not for a record of glory, but for a record of judgment.

3. Baruch’s Despair: The Collapse of Life’s Foundation

Following this path did not bring success to Baruch. Instead, it brought total collapse. He cried out in anguish:

“Woe is me now! for the Lord hath added grief to my sorrow; I fainted in my sighing, and I find no rest.” (Jeremiah 45:3, KJV)

Here, ‘Rest’ (Menuhah, מְנוּחָה) is not merely peace of mind (Shalom). It signifies one's place in life, the foundation of existence—a place where one can say, "I can live here." Baruch has now lost this.

• Social status / The family’s future / A secure foundation for life

Everything collapsed. His sighing was not a simple expression of greed; it was the agony of a man who lost his foundation while following his faith. Yet, at the same time, deep within him, there remained expectations he had not yet let go of.

4. God’s Question: For Whom are the Great Things?

Then the Lord questioned Baruch:

“And seekest thou great things for thyself? seek them not.” (Jeremiah 45:5, KJV)

This word pierces through to Baruch’s core. He was serving God, but in one corner of his heart, he was still expecting ‘great things’ (Gedolot, גְּדֹלוֹט) for himself: the restoration of his family, a stable position, or meaningful success.

God cuts those expectations off. For now is not a “time to become great,” but a “time to survive.” It is meaningless to decorate one's own room inside a burning house. We must let go of our hold on the things God has already decided to tear down.

5. God’s Promise: Life as a Prize of War

God does not promise Baruch great success. Instead, He says:

“but thy life will I give unto thee for a prey in all places whither thou goest.” (Jeremiah 45:5, KJV)

A ‘Prey’ (Shalal, שָׁלָל) is the spoils of war, something barely snatched away from a battlefield. This is not a promise of prosperity, but a promise of survival. Yet, in an era of collapse, this is the greatest grace.

• Survival of life is more precious than an unshakable position.

• Life held in God’s hand is grace itself.

6. Conclusion: What are We Holding Onto?

Ultimately, Baruch had to choose: The rest of this world, or the mission of God. He laid down his rest and held onto the mission. To the world, it might look like failure, but in God’s eyes, his life was no failure because he held onto God's mission until the end.

• True Success: Not achieving much, but not letting go of what God has entrusted to us.

• True Blessing: Not being in a comfortable place, but being held in the hands of God.

We are living in a world that is never secure—a world that will one day surely collapse and burn away. In this era, the important question for us is this:

1. Am I trying to achieve ‘great things’ in this land?

2. Or am I holding onto the ‘mission’ God has entrusted to me?

God still comes to us today, just as He sought out Baruch in a place that was uncomfortable, difficult, and sometimes discouraging. Therefore, we must live a life that does not lose sight of God, rather than a life that achieves great things. The person who holds onto God’s word until the end and follows that mission in an era of collapse—that person is truly blessed.
