아기가 젖을 사모하는 것은 본능입니다. 그렇다면 성도도 자동으로 말씀을 사모하게 됩니까? 베드로는 사모하라고 명령합니다. 이는 책임이 따른다는 뜻입니다.

1. All Malice (Kakia) While this word is a general term for 'bad behavior,' in a relational context, it implies a state of mind that wishes for the misfortune of others or a vicious disposition. It is like the soil laid in the field of the heart before any outward action appears. It can be seen as the root from which the other four sins grow. The Principle of Community Destruction: The motive of the heart itself is in a polluted state. Even if one is smiling on the outside, if the inner heart is filled with malice, that relationship is already rotting from the inside.

2. All Guile (Dolos) In ancient Greek, this word meant 'bait' or a 'snare' used in hunting or fishing. It refers not to simple lies, but to calculated deceit used to catch or exploit others. It is a craftiness that stops at nothing to achieve its purpose. The Principle of Community Destruction: It reduces brothers and sisters, who should be loved and served, into mere tools for my own gain. Sincere trust cannot be formed in a relationship where bait is cast.

3. Hypocrisies (Hypokrisis) This word refers to an actor performing while wearing a mask in ancient theater. It means hiding one's original face and speaking with the face of a character. The use of the plural form here suggests an attitude of changing various masks depending on the situation and the person to engage in relationships. The Principle of Community Destruction: It destroys the authenticity which is the core of the community. True spiritual fellowship cannot occur while wearing a mask, and eventually, people treat each other as if they are acting.

4. Envies (Phthonos) It is a much stronger and more destructive emotion than simple jealousy of what others possess. It is a heart that cannot bear to see others doing well. It includes the wicked psychology of wishing for the other person to be ruined since I cannot have it. The Principle of Community Destruction: It directly contradicts the community spirit of Romans 12:15, "Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep." When a member's success becomes my pain rather than my joy, the community becomes competitors rather than coworkers.

5. All Evil Speakings (Katalalia) This word is a compound of kata (against, down) and laleo (to speak). It literally means speaking in a way that tears someone down. Rather than open criticism, it primarily refers to slander or backbiting done in places where the person involved is absent. The Principle of Community Destruction: It is the final result where the previous four states of heart burst out of the mouth. This becomes the most powerful weapon that spreads poison to listeners and divides the entire community.

Lay Aside All These These five are not a randomly listed list, but can be read as a progression of sin. Malice sprouts in the heart, envy toward others grows, guile (a scheme to bring the other down) is plotted, hypocrisy (a mask) is worn to pretend otherwise, and finally, slander (words) is used to kill the opponent. Peter commands us to "lay aside" all these. This verb means to strip off dirty clothes. Just as one takes off old clothes when being baptized, in the community of the born-again, these old, filthy clothes of relationship destruction must be completely stripped off.

The Word That Builds the Community (1 Peter 2:2)

The milk of the Word 

Peter presents the Word as the only solution immediately after mentioning the elements that destroy the community. "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby." (1 Peter 2:2)

The Milk of the Word (Logikos) The Greek word logikos, translated as 'of the word' (or spiritual/reasonable), implies 'rational' or 'logical,' but in the Bible, it does not mean simple human reason. It means milk belonging to the Word (Logos). Just as physical milk makes the body grow, only the Word of God makes our souls grow rationally and spiritually. Believers do not create this divine reasonableness through human thinking but realize it by feeding on the milk of the Word given by God.

The Sincere Milk (Adolos)

The Greek word adolos, translated as 'sincere' (or pure), means a state without falsehood, unmixed purity. Here, a significant linguistic contrast appears. If the guile to be cast aside in verse 1 is dolos, the Word to be eaten in verse 2 is adolos, that is, the Word without guile. In other words, it means that one can properly drink the sincere (adolos) Word only when the inner deceit (dolos) is cast aside. Since God's Word is not mixed with any worldly guile or hypocrisy, only those who feed on this Word can form a character without falsehood.

Our Responsibility and Conclusion

Spiritual Instinct and Volitional Obedience

It is an instinct for a baby to desire milk. Then, do believers automatically come to desire the Word? Peter commands us to "desire." This means responsibility follows. We have been born again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible seed, by the Word (1 Peter 1:23). Since we have life, it is normal to instinctively long for the Word, but if our palates are tamed by the stimulating sins of the world, we need training to consciously draw near to the Word. The reason a community collapses is not because there is no Word, but because there are things chewed on more frequently than the Word. If comparison, slander, and complaining come to the mouth more often than the Word, the soul becomes tamed by that taste.

The Principle of Replacement

Peter presents "lay aside" and "desire" together. The responsibility to spit out poison and the responsibility to seek milk are required simultaneously. The solution to community destruction lies not merely in suppressing evil, but in replacing it with something better.
