1. 문제 제기 – “사랑하라”는 명령 앞에서의 절망

사랑하는 성도 여러분,
베드로는 오늘 본문 22절에서 우리에게 아주 높은 수준의 사랑을 요구합니다.

“거짓 없이 형제를 사랑하고, 순수한 마음으로 뜨겁게 서로 사랑하라.”

여기서 ‘뜨겁게’라는 말은
그냥 감정적으로 잠깐 좋아하는 사랑이 아닙니다.
헬라어로 에크테노스(Ektenōs),
끊어질 듯 당겨진 줄처럼 끝까지 힘을 다해 지속하는 사랑입니다.

그런데 이 명령을 들으면,
우리는 마음이 먼저 반응합니다.

“주님, 그게… 잘 안 됩니다.”

왜냐하면 우리는 너무 잘 알기 때문입니다.
우리의 사랑이 어떤 것인지.

기분 좋을 때는 불타오르다가
조금만 상처받으면 식어버리고,
조금만 실망하면 마음을 닫아버리는
그런 사랑이라는 것을 우리는 경험으로 알고 있습니다.

그래서 이 말씀은 우리에게
도전이 아니라 부담으로 들립니다.
이상적인 말이 아니라, 불가능한 요구처럼 들립니다.

베드로는 이 문제를
아주 냉정하게 진단합니다.
24절입니다.

“모든 육체는 풀과 같고 사람의 모든 영광은 풀의 꽃과 같으니라.
풀은 마르고 그것의 꽃은 떨어지되.”

이게 무슨 말입니까?

인간의 결단,
인간의 감정,
인간의 의지는
풀과 같다는 것입니다.

처음에는 푸릅니다.
처음에는 향기롭습니다.
하지만 시간이 지나면 반드시 마릅니다.
그리고 떨어집니다.

우리의 눈물,
우리의 결단,
우리의 뜨거운 다짐도
시간이라는 바람 앞에서는 결국 시들어버립니다.

그러니까 지금 이 명령은 이런 말입니다.

시들어버릴 육체를 재료로
시들지 않는 사랑을 만들어내라.

이건 구조적으로 불가능한 요구입니다.

그래서 우리는 실패합니다.
그래서 우리는 사랑하다가 지칩니다.
그래서 우리는 어느 순간
“나는 원래 이런 사람이야” 하고 체념해 버립니다.

 

2. 해결의 열쇠 – 거듭남: 사랑의 출처가 바뀌다

그런데 성경은 여기서 멈추지 않습니다.
베드로는 논리를 갑자기 바꿉니다.

사랑 이야기를 하다가
“너희는 거듭났다”고 말합니다.

23절입니다.

“너희가 다시 태어난 것은
썩을 씨에서 난 것이 아니요
썩지 아니할 씨에서 난 것이니
살아 있고 영원히 거하는 하나님의 말씀으로 된 것이니라.”

이 말은 뜬금없는 신학 강의가 아닙니다.

이 말의 핵심은 이것입니다.

너희의 사랑의 출처가 바뀌었다.

이전에는
육체에서 사랑이 나왔습니다.
감정에서 사랑이 나왔습니다.
기분에서 사랑이 나왔습니다.

그래서 사랑이 짧았습니다.
그래서 사랑이 조건적이었습니다.

그런데 이제는
말씀이라는 씨앗에서 사랑이 나오도록
존재 자체가 바뀌었다는 것입니다.

베드로는 이 씨앗의 성질을
세 가지 단어로 설명합니다.

① 썩지 않는 씨 – 압타르토스(Aphthartos)

이 말은
‘썩는다’라는 말 앞에
부정 접두어가 붙은 단어입니다.

즉,
부패하지 않는 씨입니다.

인간의 혈통에서 나온 씨는
유효기간이 있습니다.
시간이 지나면 상합니다.
사랑도 변질됩니다.

하지만
말씀의 씨앗에는
부패의 유전자가 없습니다.

그러므로 우리는
이 썩지 않는 씨로
다시 태어난 사람들입니다.

우리 안에는
환경에 따라 상하지 않는
사랑을 할 수 있는 생명이
이미 심겨져 있습니다.

② 살아 있는 씨 – 존(Zōn)

이 말은
‘살다’라는 동사의 현재분사입니다.

말씀은
박물관에 있는 유물이 아닙니다.
도서관 책장 속 정보가 아닙니다.

말씀은
땅에 심기면
껍질을 깨고 나오는
생명체입니다.

내 의지는 죽어 있어도
말씀은 살아 있습니다.

내 감정은 차가워도
말씀은 지금도 움직입니다.

그래서 사랑은
내가 억지로 만들어내는 게 아니라
내 안에 살아 있는 말씀이
나를 밀어내듯 이끌어내는 것입니다.

③ 영원히 머무는 씨 – 메논(Menōn)

이 말은
‘머무르다’라는 동사의 현재분사입니다.

풀의 꽃은 떨어집니다.
감정은 떠납니다.
열정은 식습니다.

그러나
말씀은 떠나지 않습니다.

한 번 심겨진 영혼 안에서
말씀은 끝까지 버팁니다.
끝까지 남아 있습니다.

그래서
상대방이 실망스러워도
내 마음이 메말라도
말씀은 내 안에서
사라지지 않습니다.

그 버티는 힘 때문에
우리는 포기하지 않고
뜨겁게 사랑할 수 있습니다.

 

3. 논리의 결론 – 왜 다시 거듭남인가?

25절입니다.

“오직 주의 말씀은 영원토록 지속되나니
복음으로 너희에게 선포된 말씀이
곧 이 말씀이니라.”

정리하면 이렇습니다.

육체, 즉 풀의 힘으로는
잠깐의 감정 놀이는 할 수 있어도
지속적인 사랑은 할 수 없습니다.

그러나 우리는
썩지 않는 씨,
살아 있는 씨,
영원히 머무는 씨로
존재가 바뀐 사람들입니다.

그러므로
베드로의 명령은 이런 뜻입니다.

너희 의지를 믿지 말고,
너희 안에 심겨진
말씀의 생명을 믿어라.

그리고
그 생명을 의지하여
서로 뜨겁게 사랑하라.

 

4. 적용 – 말씀의 생명으로 사랑하는 3단계

그렇다면 실제로 어떻게 해야 합니까?
내 감정이 식었을 때,
내 마음이 닫혔을 때,
어떻게 사랑해야 합니까?

성경적 방법은
억지로 참는 것이 아닙니다.
훈련 방법은 세 단계입니다.

1단계: 한계를 선언하라 (Admission)

사랑이 안 될 때
억지로 사랑하려 하지 마십시오.

먼저 이렇게 고백하십시오.

“하나님, 제 감정은 지금 시들었습니다.
제 힘으로는 저 사람을 사랑할 수 없습니다.
저는 풀과 같습니다.”

이것은 패배 선언이 아닙니다.
자아의 죽음입니다.

내 힘을 포기할 때
말씀이 일할 공간이 생깁니다.

2단계: 말씀과 대면하라 (Confrontation)

이제 내 감정과
내 안의 말씀을
정면으로 마주 세우십시오.

“내 감정은 싫다고 말합니다.
하지만 내 안에 있는
살아 있는 말씀은
사랑하라고 말씀하십니다.”

“나는 내 기분이 아니라
이 말씀을 따르겠습니다.”

이게 믿음입니다.
감정보다
말씀 편에 서는 것입니다.

3단계: 육체를 복종시키라 (Submission)

감정이 안 따라와도
말씀에 순종하는
작은 행동 하나를 하십시오.

인사하십시오.
축복하십시오.
작은 친절 하나를 베푸십시오.

놀랍게도
그 순간부터
씨앗이 발아합니다.

미움이 녹아내리고
긍휼이 생기고
사랑이 다시 자라기 시작합니다.

이것이
말씀의 생명이
역사하는 방식입니다.

마무리

사랑하는 성도 여러분,

형제 사랑은
내 인격의 산물이 아닙니다.

내 안에 심겨진
말씀이라는 씨앗이
반드시 맺게 되는 열매입니다.

그러므로
오늘도 내 감정을 믿지 말고
내 안에 심겨진
이 살아 있는 말씀을 믿으십시오.

그리고
그 말씀을 의지하여
서로 뜨겁게 사랑하십시오.

1. The Problem – Despair before the Command to Love

Beloved brothers and sisters,
in verse 22 of today’s passage, Peter gives us a very high command.

“Love one another with a pure heart fervently.” (1 Peter 1:22, KJV)

The word “fervently” here does not mean emotional excitement for a moment.
In Greek, it is ektenōs,
a word that describes something stretched to its limit,
a love that keeps going without breaking.

When we hear this command,
our hearts immediately respond:

“Lord… that is hard.”

Because we already know, from experience,
what our love is like.

When we feel good, it burns hot.
When we are hurt, it grows cold.
When we are disappointed, we close our hearts.

So this command feels less like encouragement
and more like a burden.
It sounds not ideal, but impossible.

Peter diagnoses the problem clearly in verse 24:

“For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass.
The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away.” (1 Peter 1:24, KJV)

What does this mean?

Human resolve,
human emotion,
human will
are like grass.

At first, they are green.
At first, they are beautiful.
But with time, they always wither.
They always fall.

Our tears,
our decisions,
our passionate promises
all wither under the wind of time.

So this command is really saying:

Use what withers
to produce what does not wither.

Structurally, this is impossible.

That is why we fail.
That is why we grow tired of loving.
That is why we eventually say,
“This is just who I am,” and give up.

2. The Key – New Birth: The Source of Love Has Changed

But Scripture does not stop there.
Peter suddenly shifts his logic.

While speaking about love,
he begins to speak about new birth.

Verse 23:

“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible,
by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” (1 Peter 1:23, KJV)

This is not a random theological comment.

Its meaning is simple:

The source of your love has changed.

Before, love came from the flesh.
It came from emotion.
It came from mood.

That is why it was short-lived.
That is why it was conditional.

But now, love is meant to come from
the seed of the Word.
Your very existence has changed.

Peter explains the nature of this seed in three ways.

① An Imperishable Seed

This seed is described as incorruptible.

Human seed has an expiration date.
With time, it decays.
Love becomes distorted.

But the seed of the Word
has no gene of corruption.

Therefore, we are people
born of an imperishable seed.

Within us is already planted
a life capable of loving
without being ruined by circumstances.

② A Living Seed

This word means “living” in the present sense.

The Word is not a museum artifact.
It is not dead information on a shelf.

When it is planted,
it breaks its shell and grows.
It is alive.

My will may be dead,
but the Word is alive.

My emotions may be cold,
but the Word is moving.

Love, then, is not something
I force out of myself.
It is something the living Word within me
pushes outward.

③ A Seed that Abides Forever

This word means “remaining” or “abiding.”

The flower of grass falls.
Emotions leave.
Passion fades.

But the Word does not leave.

Once planted in a soul,
the Word endures.
It stays.

So even when others disappoint us,
even when our hearts feel dry,
the Word within us does not disappear.

Because it endures,
we are able to love fervently
without giving up.

3. The Conclusion – Why New Birth Again?

Verse 25 says:

“But the word of the Lord endureth for ever.
And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” (1 Peter 1:25, KJV)

In summary:

By the power of the flesh,
we can only play with temporary feelings.
We cannot love continually.

But we are people whose existence has been changed
by an imperishable seed,
a living seed,
an abiding seed.

So Peter’s command really means this:

Do not trust your own will.
Trust the life of the Word planted within you.

And by relying on that life,
love one another fervently.

4. Application – Loving by the Life of the Word (Three Steps)

So how do we do this in real life?
When our emotions have cooled,
when our hearts are closed,
how do we love?

The biblical way is not forced endurance.
It is practiced in three steps.

Step 1: Admit Your Limits (Admission)

When love feels impossible,
do not try to force it.

First, confess:

“God, my emotions have withered.
I cannot love this person by my own strength.
I am like grass.”

This is not defeat.
It is the death of self.

When we release our strength,
the Word gains space to work.

Step 2: Confront the Word (Confrontation)

Now place your emotions
face to face with the Word within you.

“My emotions say no.
But the living Word within me
says love.”

“I will follow the Word,
not my feelings.”

This is faith.
It is standing on the side of the Word
rather than emotion.

Step 3: Submit the Body (Submission)

Even if emotions do not follow,
take one small action of obedience.

Greet them.
Bless them.
Show one small kindness.

And surprisingly,
at that moment,
the seed begins to sprout.

Hatred melts,
compassion rises,
and love begins to grow again.

This is how
the life of the Word works.

Closing

Beloved brothers and sisters,

Brotherly love
is not the product of my personality.

It is the inevitable fruit
of the seed of the Word
planted within me.

Therefore,
do not trust your emotions today.
Trust the living Word planted in you.

And by relying on that Word,
love one another fervently.
