거룩함으로 나아가는 신앙

 

서론: 거룩함에 대한 오해와 진실

성도 여러분, 우리는 흔히 '거룩함'을 오해합니다. 거룩함을 '무엇을 안 하는 것(Don'ts)'의 목록으로 생각합니다. 술을 안 마시고, 화를 안 내고, 죄를 안 짓는 소극적인 상태 말입니다. 혹은 세상과 담을 쌓고 산속에 들어가 혼자 지내는 '고립'으로 생각하기도 합니다.

하지만 베드로가 말하는 거룩함은 박물관의 조각상처럼 가만히 있는 정지 상태가 아닙니다. 땀 흘리며 달리는 운동 상태입니다. 거룩함은 어디로부터 떠나(From), 누구에게로 향하는(To) 분명한 방향성이 있는 여행입니다.

오늘 그 거룩한 여정의 3단계를 함께 걷고자 합니다.

 

본론: 거룩함으로 나아가는 3단계

첫째, 출발점: 헛된 가치에서 떠나는 것입니다 (1:18-19).

베드로는 우리가 과거에 '조상 대대로 내려온 헛된 행실'에 묶여 있었다고 말합니다. 이것은 단순히 나쁜 습관이 아닙니다. 우리 삶을 지배해 온 '세상의 가치관'입니다.

세상은 무엇을 추구합니까? 바로 '은과 금'입니다. 세상은 은과 금이 영원할 것처럼 믿습니다. 그것이 우리의 안전을 지켜줄 것이라 믿고 우상처럼 섬깁니다. 하지만 베드로는 충격적인 선언을 합니다. "그것은 썩어질 것이다!" 물리적으로 금은 변하지 않지만, 생명을 살리는 관점에서 보면 아무런 효력이 없는 쓰레기와 같다는 것입니다. 죽음 앞에서, 심판대 앞에서 금덩어리는 우리를 지켜주지 못합니다. 그러므로 그것은 '헛된 것'입니다.

그러나 여러분, 우리의 영혼은 무엇으로 구원받았습니까? 세상의 돈이 아니라, 우주에서 가장 값비싼 '예수 그리스도의 보배로운 피'입니다. 이 사실이 우리에게 주는 충격이 거룩의 시작입니다.

거룩함은 "내 가치를 재발견하는 것"에서 시작됩니다. "아, 나는 돈으로 매겨지는 인생이 아니구나. 나는 하나님의 아들의 피로 구원받은 인생이구나!" 이 거룩한 자존감이 있을 때, 우리는 비로소 우리를 값싸게 만드는 세상의 유혹을 거절할 수 있습니다. 거룩은 억제가 아니라, 더 높은 가치를 위한 선택입니다.

 

둘째, 방향: 개인의 문제로 씨름하는 삶을 사는 것입니다 (1:21).

헛된 가치에서 떠난 우리는 이제 어디로 가야 합니까? 마음을 비워두기만 하면, 다시 죄가 들어옵니다. 이제 우리의 시선을 세상이 아닌 하나님께 고정해야 합니다.

베드로는 우리의 믿음과 소망을 "죽은 자를 살리신 하나님"께 두라고 말합니다. 세상의 소망(돈, 건강, 사람)은 썩어지고 변합니다. 상황에 따라 요동칩니다. 그러나 죽음을 생명으로 바꾸신 부활의 하나님께 둔 소망은 영원합니다.

거룩함은 '시선의 전환'입니다. 세상 사람들은 문제가 터지면 "망했다"고 절망합니다. 하지만 거룩한 성도는 믿음과 소망의 눈으로 해석합니다. "하나님이 살아계신다. 이 고난 끝에 영광이 있다." 세상의 헛된 소리를 끄고, 믿음과 소망으로 내면을 채우는 것. 하나님께 가까이 갈수록 죄는 자연스럽게 멀어집니다. 이것이 거룩의 능력입니다.

오늘 나의 삶의 문제들과 치열하게 씨름하되, 믿음과 소망의 눈으로 문제를 직시하고 해결해 나가는 것, 이것이 거룩함의 운동입니다. 우리의 영적인 근육을 강하게 하는 것입니다.

 

셋째, 도착점: 형제를 뜨겁게 사랑하는 것입니다 (1:22).

그렇다면 이 거룩한 여정의 최종 목적지는 어디일까요? 놀랍게도 베드로는 '공동체의 사랑'을 말합니다.

22절을 보십시오. "너희가 진리에 순종함으로 너희 영혼을 깨끗하게 하여" 그 이른 결과가 무엇입니까? 바로 "거짓 없이 형제를 사랑하는 것"입니다. 나 혼자 깨끗한 것은 거룩의 절반에 불과합니다. 깨끗한 그릇에 무엇을 담아야 합니까? 바로 '사랑'입니다.

나와 마음이 맞는 사람만 사랑하는 것은 세상도 합니다. 베드로는 말합니다. "마음으로 뜨겁게 서로 사랑하라." 여기서 '뜨겁게'는 근육이 찢어지도록 힘을 쓴다는 뜻입니다. 나와 다른 지체, 나를 힘들게 하는 그 까다로운 형제를 품어내기 위해 영적인 근육을 쓰는 것, 그것이 거룩의 완성입니다.

사랑 없는 거룩은 가짜입니다. 하나님께 가까워진 사람은 반드시 사람에게도 다가가게 되어 있습니다. 내 옆의 형제를 사랑하는 것이 내가 거룩하다는 유일한 증거입니다.

 

결론: 의무가 아니라 미각으로 (2:3)

성도 여러분, 이 길이 너무 힘들게 느껴지십니까? 이를 악물고 억지로 가는 길이 아닙니다.

(2:3) "너희가 주의 인자하심을 맛보았으면 그리하라."

거룩함은 의무가 아니라 '미각(Taste)'의 문제입니다. 진수성찬을 맛본 사람은 쓰레기통을 뒤지지 않습니다. 맛있는 음식을 먹어본 사람은 상한 음식을 거들떠보지도 않습니다.

예배와 말씀, 기도를 통해 주님의 은혜가 얼마나 달콤한지 날마다 맛보십시오. 세상의 쾌락보다 주님의 사랑이 더 좋다는 것을 경험하십시오. 나를 피로 사신 사랑의 하나님, 죽은 자를 살리신 능력의 하나님을 만나십시오. 그 '거룩한 미각'이 우리를 헛된 죄에서 멀어지게 하고, 서로를 뜨겁게 사랑하게 만들 것입니다.

이 은혜의 맛을 아는 거룩한 성도님들이 되시기를 축복합니다.

 

 

Faith Advancing Toward Holiness

 

Introduction: Misunderstandings and Truth about Holiness

Dear saints,

we often misunderstand 'holiness.' We think of holiness as a list of "Don'ts"—not drinking, not getting angry, not sinning—a passive state. Or, we think of it as "Isolation," building walls against the world and living alone in a mountain.

But the holiness Peter speaks of is not a static state, standing still like a statue in a museum. It is a dynamic state, running and sweating. Holiness is a journey with a clear direction: departing 'From' somewhere and heading 'To' someone.

Today, I want to walk through the three stages of that holy journey with you.

 

Body: The 3 Stages of Advancing Toward Holiness

First, the Starting Point: Departing from Vain Values (1:18-19).

Peter tells us that in the past, we were bound to a "vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers." This is not just about bad habits. It refers to the 'values of the world' that have dominated our lives.

What does the world pursue? It is 'silver and gold.' The world believes silver and gold are eternal. It serves them like idols, believing they will secure our safety. But Peter makes a shocking declaration. "They are corruptible things!" Physically, gold may not change, but from the perspective of saving life, it is like useless rubbish that has no effect. In the face of death, before the judgment seat, a lump of gold cannot protect us. Therefore, it is 'vain.'

But friends, with what was our soul redeemed? Not with the money of the world, but with the "precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." The shock this truth gives us is the beginning of holiness.

Holiness begins with "rediscovering my value." "Ah, I am not a life priced by money. I am a life redeemed by the blood of the Son of God!" When we have this holy self-esteem, we can finally refuse the temptations of the world that cheapen us. Holiness is not suppression, but a choice for a higher value.

 

Second, The Direction: Living a Life Wrestling with Personal Problems (1:21).

Having departed from vain values, where should we go? If we just leave our hearts empty, sin will enter again. Now, we must fix our gaze not on the world, but on God.

Peter tells us to place our faith and hope in "God, that raised him up from the dead." Worldly hope (money, health, people) is corruptible and changing. It fluctuates with circumstances. But the hope placed in the God of resurrection, who turned death into life, is eternal.

Holiness is a 'shift of vision.' People of the world despair and say, "It's over," when problems arise. But a holy saint interprets with the eyes of faith and hope. "God is alive. Glory follows this suffering." Turning off the vain noises of the world and filling the inner self with faith and hope. As we draw nearer to God, sin naturally moves further away. This is the power of holiness.

Wrestling fiercely with the problems of my life today, yet facing and resolving them with eyes of faith and hope—this is the movement of holiness. It is strengthening our spiritual muscles.

 

Third, The Destination: Loving the Brethren Fervently (1:22).

Then, where is the final destination of this holy journey? Surprisingly, Peter speaks of 'love of the community.'

Look at verse 22. "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth"... what is the result? It is "unfeigned love of the brethren." Being clean alone is only half of holiness. What must be filled in a clean vessel? It is 'love.'

Loving only those who match my heart is something the world does too. Peter says, "See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently." Here, 'fervently' implies straining one's muscles to the limit. Using spiritual muscles to embrace that different member, that difficult brother who troubles me—that is the completion of holiness.

Holiness without love is fake. One who has drawn near to God will inevitably draw near to people. Loving the brother next to me is the only evidence that I am holy.

 

Conclusion: Not by Duty, but by Taste (2:3)

Dear saints, does this path feel too difficult? It is not a path we walk by gritting our teeth and forcing ourselves.

(2:3) "If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious."

Holiness is not a matter of duty, but a matter of 'Taste.' One who has tasted a feast does not rummage through a trash can. One who has eaten delicious food does not even look at spoiled food.

Taste day by day how sweet the Lord's grace is through worship, the Word, and prayer. Experience that the Lord's love is better than the pleasures of the world. Meet the God of love who bought me with blood, the God of power who raised the dead.

That 'holy taste' will make us distance ourselves from vain sins and lead us to love one another fervently.
