산 소망이 가져오는 삶의 변화

많은 사람들이 '소망'을 막연한 기대나 위로 정도로 생각합니다. "잘 될 거야"라는 긍정적인 사고방식 정도로 여기는 것입니다. 그러나 성경이 말하는 '산 소망'은 다릅니다. 이 소망은 우리 안에 들어오는 순간, 우리의 삶을 송두리째 뒤흔들어 놓는 강력한 에너지입니다. 마치 전기가 들어오면 기계가 작동하듯이, 하늘의 소망이 들어온 사람은 가만히 있을 수가 없습니다. 오늘 본문은 그 산 소망이 우리 삶에 일으키는 세 가지 구체적인 변화를 보여줍니다.

1. 태도의 변화: 안일함에서 '치열함'으로 (13절)

"그러므로 너희 마음의 허리를 동여매고 근신하여..."

소망이 없는 사람은 삶이 무기력하거나 방탕합니다. 목적지가 없기 때문입니다. 그러나 소망이 들어온 사람에게 나타나는 첫 번째 변화는 삶을 대하는 태도가 '치열해진다'는 것입니다. 베드로는 "마음의 허리를 동여매라(Gird up the loins of your mind)"고 명령합니다. 긴 옷을 입던 시절, 허리띠를 맨다는 것은 '달릴 준비' 혹은 '싸울 준비'를 한다는 뜻입니다. 멍하니 앉아 있는 것이 아니라, 언제든 주님의 뜻대로 움직일 수 있는 '영적 긴장감'을 갖게 되는 것입니다. 진짜 천국 소망을 가진 사람은 게으를 수 없습니다. 그 영광스러운 날을 준비하기 위해, 오늘 하루를 치열하고 성실하게 살아냅니다.

 

2. 기준의 변화: 세상의 유행에서 '말씀의 순종'으로 (14절)

"너희가 순종하는 자식처럼 전에 알지 못할 때에 따르던 너희 사욕을 본받지 말고"

소망이 없을 때 우리는 무엇을 따라 살았습니까? "남들이 다 하니까", "세상이 그렇다니까" 하며 세상의 유행과 욕심을 내 삶의 기준으로 삼았습니다. 베드로는 이것을 '알지 못하던 때(무지)'의 모습이라고 말합니다. 그러나 소망이 들어오면 기준이 바뀝니다. 세상의 틀(Mold)에 나를 구겨 넣지 않습니다(본받지 말고). 이제 우리는 '순종의 자녀'입니다. 세상 사람들이 "왜 너는 유별나게 사느냐?"라고 물을 때, 우리는 대답합니다. "나에게는 당신들이 모르는 더 좋은 기준, 하늘의 기준이 생겼기 때문입니다." 

 

3. 목표의 변화: 행복에서 '거룩'으로 (15-16절) "오직 너희를 부르신 거룩한 이처럼 너희도 모든 행실에 거룩한 자가 되라"

세상 사람들의 인생 목표는 대부분 '행복'입니다. 잘 먹고, 잘 살고, 편안한 것입니다. 그러나 산 소망을 가진 성도의 인생 목표는 '행복'을 넘어 '거룩'으로 바뀝니다. 왜냐하면, 우리가 상속받을 그 나라는 거룩한 곳이며, 우리를 부르신 아버지가 거룩한 분이기 때문입니다. 여기서 '모든 행실'은 교회에서의 모습만이 아닙니다. 직장, 가정, 친구 관계 등 모든 삶의 방식(Lifestyle)을 말합니다. 아버지를 사랑하면 아버지를 닮고 싶어집니다. 소망은 우리로 하여금 땅의 쾌락을 좇는 삶을 멈추고, 하늘 아버지를 닮아가는 거룩한 삶을 갈망하게 만듭니다.

 

결론: 변화된 삶이 산 소망의 증거입니다

산 소망은 우리를 안일한 잠에서 깨워 허리띠를 매게 합니다.

산 소망은 우리를 세상의 더러운 욕망의 틀에서 뛰쳐나오게 합니다.

산 소망은 우리를 하나님 아버지를 닮은 거룩한 자녀로 빚어갑니다.

이 변화야말로 우리가 천국 백성이라는 가장 확실한 신분증입니다.

오늘도 이 산 소망의 능력으로, 세상과는 다르게, 거룩하게 살아가는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

 

 

Changes in Life Brought by Living Hope

 

Introduction

Many people think of 'hope' as a vague expectation or mere comfort. They consider it just a positive way of thinking, like saying, "It will be okay." However, the 'living hope' the Bible speaks of is different. The moment this hope enters us, it is a powerful energy that shakes our lives from the bottom up. Just as a machine operates when electricity flows into it, a person who has received the hope of heaven cannot sit still. Today's text shows three specific changes that this living hope causes in our lives.

 

Body

1. Change in Attitude: From Complacency to 'Intensity' (v. 13)

"Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober..."

A person without hope is lethargic or dissolute in life because they have no destination. However, the first change that appears in a person with hope is that their attitude toward life becomes 'intense.' Peter commands, "Gird up the loins of your mind." In the days when people wore long robes, girding up the loins meant 'getting ready to run' or 'getting ready to fight.' It means not sitting blankly, but having 'spiritual tension' to move according to the Lord's will at any time. A person with true hope of heaven cannot be lazy. To prepare for that glorious day, they live through today fiercely and faithfully.

 

2. Change in Standard: From Worldly Trends to 'Obedience to the Word' (v. 14)

"As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:"

When we had no hope, what did we follow? Saying "Everyone does it" or "That's how the world is," we made worldly trends and lusts the standard of our lives. Peter calls this the state of "ignorance." But when hope enters, the standard changes. We do not squeeze ourselves into the 'Mold' of the world ("not fashioning yourselves"). Now we are "obedient children." When worldly people ask, "Why do you live so peculiarly?", we answer: "Because I have a better standard, a heavenly standard, that you do not know."

 

3. Change in Goal: From Happiness to 'Holiness' (vv. 15-16)

"But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;"

The goal of life for most worldly people is 'happiness.' It is eating well, living well, and being comfortable. However, the life goal of a saint with living hope changes from 'happiness' to 'holiness.' This is because the Kingdom we will inherit is a holy place, and the Father who called us is a holy One. Here, "all manner of conversation" (which means 'conduct' or 'lifestyle' in archaic English) refers not only to our appearance in church but to our entire lifestyle—workplace, home, relationships with friends, etc. If you love your Father, you want to resemble Him. Hope makes us stop the life of chasing earthly pleasures and long for a holy life resembling our Heavenly Father.

 

Conclusion: A Changed Life is the Evidence of Living Hope

Living hope wakes us from complacent sleep to gird up our loins. Living hope makes us jump out of the dirty mold of worldly lusts. Living hope molds us into holy children resembling God the Father.

This change is the surest ID card proving that we are citizens of heaven. I bless you in the name of the Lord that, by the power of this living hope, you may live differently from the world and live holy today.
