고난을 이기는 소망의 능력

 

서론

하나님이 우리에게 '새 생명(거듭남)'이라는 선물을 먼저 주셨습니다. 거듭나는 것은 지난 시간에 배운 대로 하나님의 긍휼과, 예수 그리스도의 부활, 그리고 말씀으로 가능합니다. 그리고 새 생명을 가진 자는 산 소망을 가지게 됩니다. 그렇다면, 이 소망은 거친 현실을 살아가는 우리에게 어떤 능력을 발휘할까요? 베드로는 이 소망이 현재의 고난을 어떻게 이기게 하는지 세 가지로 설명합니다.

 

본론

1. 크게 기뻐할 수 있습니다(6절). 

"그러므로 너희가 이제 여러 가지 시험으로 말미암아 잠깐 근심하게 되지 않을 수 없으나 오히려 크게 기뻐하는도다"

거듭난 성도에게도 고난은 있습니다. 베드로는 "근심하게 되지 않을 수 없다"며 우리의 아픔을 인정합니다. 그러나 산 소망은 우리에게 영원한 관점을 선물합니다. 장차 올 영광이 너무나 크고 확실하기에, 지금 겪는 극심한 고난을 '잠깐 지나가는 것(for a season)'으로 여기게 합니다. 소망은 고난을 없애주는 마취제가 아닙니다. 고난보다 더 큰 기쁨을 보게 하는 망원경입니다. 그래서 우리는 울면서도 기뻐할 수 있습니다.

 

2. 칭찬과 영광과 존귀를 기대하게 합니다(7절).

"너희 믿음의 확실함은 불로 연단하여도 없어질 금보다 더 귀하여 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 칭찬과 영광과 존귀를 얻게 할 것이니라"

소망이 없는 사람에게 고난은 자신을 파괴하는 재앙일 뿐입니다. 그러나 예수님이 다시 오실 것을 소망하는 자에게 고난은 '용광로'와 같습니다. 불은 금을 없애려는 것이 아니라, 불순물을 제거하여 순금으로 만들기 위해 존재합니다. 하나님은 여러분을 망하게 하려고 고난을 허락하신 것이 아닙니다. 마지막 날 주님 앞에 설 때, "너의 믿음이 진짜구나!"라는 칭찬과 영광과 존귀를 얻게 하시려고, 지금 여러분을 정금같이 빚어가고 계십니다.

 

3. 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 '뛰놀게' 합니다 (8절)

"예수를 너희가 보지 못하였으나 사랑하는도다... 말할 수 없는 영광스러운 즐거움으로 기뻐하니"

우리는 예수님을 육신의 눈으로 본 적이 없습니다. 그러나 산 소망은 보이지 않는 주님을 보는 것처럼 믿고 사랑하게 합니다. 베드로 사도는 8절에서 이 기쁨을 묘사하기 위해 놀라운 단어들을 조합합니다.

첫째, '카라(χαρᾷ)'와 '아갈리아오(ἀγαλλιάω)'의 조화입니다.

베드로는 단순히 '기쁘다'고 말하지 않습니다. 우리 안에 있는 '기쁨(카라)'와 함께  '아갈리아오(ἀγαλλιάω)' 단어를 함께 사용하였습니다. 이 단어는 '너무 기뻐서 펄쩍펄쩍 뛰는 상태(exult)'를 뜻합니다. 고난 중에도 성령이 주시는 기쁨은 우리 영혼을 춤추게 만듭니다.

둘째, '아네클랄레토(ἀνεκλαλήτῳ)'입니다.

이 단어를 분해하면 '아(Not)' + '에크(Out)' + '랄레오(Speak)'입니다. 즉, 내 안의 기쁨을 '말을 통해 밖으로 다 끄집어낼 수 없다'는 뜻입니다. 세상 언어로는 표현이 불가능할 만큼 크고 신비한 기쁨이기 때문입니다.

셋째, '데독사스메네(δεδοξασμένῃ)'입니다.

이것은 '천국의 영광이 이미 묻어 있다'는 뜻입니다. 비록 내 몸은 고난의 현장에 있지만, 내 영혼은 장차 천국에서 누릴 그 영광스러운 기쁨을 미리 맛보고 있는 것입니다. 이처럼 산 소망은 우리에게 세상이 알 수도 없고 줄 수도 없는 '천국의 영광스러운 기쁨'을 주어 고난을 넉넉히 이기게 합니다.

 

결론

사랑하는 성도 여러분, 오늘 우리는 고난을 이기는 산 소망의 능력에 대해 나누었습니다. 이 소망은 현재의 고난을 '잠깐'으로 만들고, 아픈 시련을 '영광스러운 연단'으로 바꾸며, 우리에게 '말할 수 없는 기쁨'을 주어 고난 속에서도 뛰놀게 합니다.

우리가 이토록 힘들고 거친 고난의 터널을 통과하면서도, 기뻐하며 춤출 수 있는 최종적인 이유가 무엇입니까? 오늘 본문의 결론인 9절이 그 답을 줍니다.

"믿음의 결국 곧 영혼의 구원을 받음이라"

여기서 '결국(End)'은 끝장이 났다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 헬라어로 '텔로스(telos)', 즉 '최종 목적지'이자 '완성'을 뜻합니다. 지금 우리가 겪는 고난은 끝이 아닙니다. 과정일 뿐입니다. 우리 믿음의 종착역, 그 결승선에는 무엇이 기다리고 있습니까? 바로 '영혼의 구원'입니다. 죄와 고통과 사망으로부터 완전히 해방되는 그 영광스러운 구원이 우리를 기다리고 있습니다.

농부가 뙤약볕 아래서 땀 흘리면서도 웃는 이유는 가을의 추수를 알기 때문입니다. 산모가 해산의 고통을 견디는 이유는 새 생명의 탄생을 알기 때문입니다. 마찬가지로 성도 여러분, 지금의 고난을 두려워하지 마십시오. 과정은 고난일지라도, 그 결말은 반드시 구원입니다.

새 생명이 피워낸 이 산 소망을 꽉 붙드십시오. 그리고 우리 믿음의 확실한 목적지인 '영혼의 구원'을 바라보십시오. 이 영광스러운 '믿음의 결국'을 바라보며, 오늘의 고난을 넉넉히 이기고 승리하는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 주님의 이름으로 축원합니다.

 

 

The Power of Hope to Overcome Suffering

 

Introduction

God has first given us the gift of 'New Life (Regeneration).' As we learned last time, being born again is possible through God's mercy, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the Word. And those who have new life possess a living hope. Then, what power does this hope exert for us living in harsh reality? Peter explains in three ways how this hope enables us to overcome present suffering.

 

Body

1. We Can Greatly Rejoice (v.6) "Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations:"

Even born-again saints face suffering. Peter acknowledges our pain, saying we are "in heaviness." However, living hope gifts us with an eternal perspective. Because the coming glory is so great and certain, it makes us consider the severe suffering we undergo now as passing "for a season." Hope is not an anesthesia that eliminates suffering. It is a telescope that allows us to see a joy greater than the suffering. Therefore, we can rejoice even while weeping.

2. It Makes Us Expect Praise, Glory, and Honor (v.7) "That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:"

To a person without hope, suffering is merely a disaster that destroys them. However, to one who hopes for the return of Jesus, suffering is like a 'furnace.' Fire exists not to destroy gold, but to remove impurities and make it pure gold. God did not allow suffering to ruin you. He is molding you like pure gold now so that you may obtain "praise and honour and glory" when you stand before the Lord on the last day, hearing Him say, "Your faith is genuine!"

3. It Makes Us 'Exult' with Joy Unspeakable (v.8) "Whom having not seen, ye love... ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:"

We have never seen Jesus with physical eyes. However, living hope makes us believe and love the invisible Lord as if we see Him. Apostle Peter describes how powerful the joy created by this love is, using amazing combinations of words in verse 8.

First, it is the harmony of 'Chara (χαρᾷ)' and 'Agalliao (ἀγαλλιάω).'

Peter does not simply say we are 'happy.' He uses the word 'Agalliao (ἀγαλλιάω)' together with the 'joy (Chara)' within us. This word means 'to jump for joy' or 'to exult.' How is this possible in the midst of suffering? It is because it is the joy of the Holy Spirit bursting from deep within that makes our souls dance.

Second, it is 'Aneklalētō (ἀνεκλαλήτῳ).'

Breaking down this word, it is 'a' (not) + 'ek' (out) + 'laleo' (speak). It means joy that 'cannot be brought out through speech.' Even if the world asks, we cannot explain it all logically. It is a mysterious joy so great that human language cannot contain it.

Third, it is 'Dedoxasmenē (δεδοξασμένῃ).'

This means 'already infused with the glory of heaven.' Although my body is in the scene of suffering, the joy my soul tastes is a foretaste of that glorious joy we will enjoy in heaven. Thus, living hope gives us 'glorious joy of heaven' that the world neither knows nor can give, enabling us to overcome suffering abundantly.

 

Conclusion

Beloved saints, today we shared about the power of living hope to overcome suffering. This hope makes present suffering 'temporary,' turns painful trials into 'glorious refinement,' and gives us 'joy unspeakable,' making us exult even in suffering.

What is the ultimate reason we can rejoice and dance even while passing through such a difficult and rough tunnel of suffering? Verse 9, the conclusion of today's text, gives the answer.

"Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls."

Here, 'the end' does not mean destruction. In Greek, it is 'telos,' meaning the 'final destination' or 'completion.' The suffering we are going through now is not the end. It is just a process. What awaits us at the terminal of our faith, at that finish line? It is the 'salvation of souls.' The glorious salvation that completely liberates us from sin, pain, and death awaits us.

A farmer smiles even while sweating under the scorching sun because he knows the harvest of autumn. A mother endures the pain of childbirth because she knows the birth of a new life. Likewise, saints, do not fear the suffering of the present. Even if the process is suffering, the result is surely salvation.

Hold fast to this living hope that new life has blossomed. And look at the sure destination of our faith, the 'salvation of souls.' I bless you in the name of the Lord that you may look at this glorious 'end of faith' and abundantly overcome and triumph over today's suffering.
