왜 죽은 소망이 아닌 산 소망인가? 

 

서론

세상 사람들도 다 나름의 소망을 가지고 삽니다. 부자가 되고 싶고, 성공하고 싶고, 건강하게 살고 싶어 합니다. 하지만 성경은 그런 것들을 참된 소망이라 부르지 않습니다. 결국은 사라지고 실망으로 끝나기 때문입니다. 그것은 '죽은 소망'입니다. 그러나 베드로 사도는 우리에게 있는 것을 '산 소망(Lively Hope)'이라고 단언합니다. 도대체 무엇이 다르기에, 우리의 소망은 살아 있다고 말하는 것일까요?

 

본론

 

1. 소망의 '대상'이 세상과 구별된 영원한 생명이기 때문입니다 (4절 상반절)

베드로 사도는 우리가 받게 될 하늘의 유업을 설명하기 위해, 헬라어에서 아주 강력한 화법을 사용합니다. 바로 단어 앞에 '아(a-)'라는 부정 접두어를 붙이는 것입니다. 이는 "이 땅에는 그런 것이 절대 없다"는 것을 역설적으로 강조하는 표현입니다. 그가 사용한 세 가지 단어(아프타르토스, 아미안토스, 아마란토스)를 깊이 들여다보면, 우리의 산 소망이 얼마나 위대한지 알 수 있습니다.

첫째, 썩지 않습니다 (아프타르토스, ἄφθαρτος)

• 원어의 뜻: '없다(a)'와 '부패하다/파괴하다(phtheiro)'가 합쳐진 말입니다.

• 설명: 이 세상의 모든 물질은 시간이 지나면 '부패'합니다. 음식도 썩고, 옷도 낡고, 튼튼한 건물도 무너지고, 우리의 육체도 결국 흙으로 돌아갑니다. 이것이 '죽음'의 법칙입니다.

셋째, 쇠하지 않습니다 (아마란토스, ἀμάραντος)

2. 소망의 '장소'가 절대 안전하기 때문입니다 (4절 하반절)

"...너희를 위해 하늘에 마련된 상속 유업을 받게 하셨나니"

• 죽은 소망: 이 땅에 쌓아둔 소망은 불안합니다. 경제 위기, 도둑, 전쟁, 자연재해 등 수많은 위험 요소가 언제든 내 소망을 앗아갈 수 있습니다.

• 산 소망: 우리의 유업은 이 불안한 땅이 아니라, 가장 안전한 '하늘에(in Heaven)' 마련(Reserved)되어 있습니다. 하나님이 직접 관리하시는 하늘 금고에 보관되어 있기에, 세상의 어떤 재난도 이 소망을 파괴할 수 없습니다.

3. 소망의 '보증'이 하나님의 철통같은 보호이기 때문입니다 (5절)

"너희는... 믿음을 통해 [하나님]의 권능으로 보호받고 있느니라."

유업이 안전해도 상속자인 우리가 무너지면 소용이 없습니다. 하지만 베드로는 우리의 소망이 확실한 이유가 바로 하나님의 '보호하심'에 있다고 말합니다.

• 원어의 의미: 프루레오 (phroureō) 본문에서 '보호받는다'로 번역된 헬라어 '프루레오'는 단순한 돌봄이 아닌 강력한 군사 용어입니다. 이 단어는 적의 공격으로부터 성을 지키기 위해 '군대를 주둔시키다' 혹은 '미리 요새화하여 철통같이 경비하다'라는 뜻을 담고 있습니다. 즉, 하나님은 우리를 지키기 위해 당신의 권능을 군대처럼 주둔시키고 계십니다.

• 비유: 하나님의 능력 (요새): 사탄의 화살과 세상의 공격을 막아내는 것은 나의 얇은 옷(내 의지)이 아니라, 두껍고 견고한 성벽인 하나님의 능력입니다. 이 성벽이 튼튼하기 때문에 우리는 안전합니다. 믿음 (거주하는 것): 그렇다면 여기서 '믿음'의 역할은 무엇입니까? 믿음은 내가 성벽을 쌓는 것이 아닙니다. 그 튼튼한 성 안에 머물러 있기로 결정하는 것입니다. 아무리 성벽이 튼튼해도 내가 성 밖으로 뛰쳐나가면 보호받을 수 없습니다.

• 적용: "성도 여러분, 믿음으로 보호받는다는 것은 내 믿음의 공로로 방어막을 치는 게 아닙니다. 하나님이 세우신 '예수 그리스도'라는 난공불락의 요새 안으로 들어가, 그분을 신뢰하고 그 안에 머무는 것이 바로 믿음입니다. 하나님은 지금도 그분의 권능으로 여러분을 '프루레오(철통 경비)' 하고 계십니다."

결론

왜 우리의 소망이 산 소망입니까? 그 내용은 아프타르토스, 아미안토스, 아마란토스의 완전한 것이기 때문입니다. 또한 그 소망은 하늘에 안전하게 간직되어 있고, 하나님의 군사적 능력(프루레오)이 우리를 보호하고 계시기 때문입니다.

물론 우리는 믿음으로 그 요새 안에 머물러야 합니다. 하지만 기억하십시오. 이 믿음조차도 나의 공로가 아닙니다. 세상에서 방황하던 우리를 불러 이 안전한 요새로 들여보내 주신 분도 하나님이시요, 연약하여 뛰쳐나가려는 우리 마음을 붙드시는 분도 하나님이십니다.

그러므로 나의 연약한 의지가 아니라, 우리를 믿게 하시고 끝까지 지키시는 신실하신 하나님을 바라보십시오. 그분 안에서 이 산 소망을 끝까지 누리는 저와 여러분이 되시기를 축원합니다.

 

 

Why Is It a Lively Hope, Not a Dead One?

Introduction People of the world all live with their own hopes. They want to be rich, they want to succeed, and they want to live healthily. However, the Bible does not call these things true hope. This is because they eventually disappear and end in disappointment. That is "dead hope." However, the Apostle Peter asserts that what we have is a "lively hope." What exactly is different that makes him say our hope is alive?

Body

1. Because the 'Object' of the Hope Is Eternal Life, Distinct from the World (v.4a) To describe the inheritance of heaven we will receive, the Apostle Peter uses a very powerful figure of speech in Greek. He attaches the negative prefix 'a-' to the front of words. This is an expression that paradoxically emphasizes that "such things absolutely do not exist in this earth." If we look deeply into the three words he used (aphthartos, amiantos, amarantos), we can see how great our lively hope is.

First, It is Incorruptible (aphthartos, ἄφθαρτος)

• Meaning of the original word: It is a combination of 'a' (without) and 'phtheiro' (to corrupt/destroy).

• Explanation: All material things in this world 'corrupt' over time. Food rots, clothes wear out, sturdy buildings collapse, and our bodies eventually return to dust. This is the law of 'death'.

• Feature of Lively Hope: However, the heavenly inheritance possesses [Intrinsic Immortality]. It is life itself that the virus of death cannot invade, and it does not wear out or decay even as time passes.

Second, It is Undefiled (amiantos, ἀμίαντος)

• Meaning of the original word: It is a combination of 'a' (without) and 'miaino' (to pollute/stain).

• Explanation: Worldly heritage is often stained with 'sin'. In the process of making money, one might exploit someone, or sell their conscience for success. Or, when a large inheritance is received, siblings may fight and become corrupt because of it. Worldly blessings are not free from the pollution of sin.

• Feature of Lively Hope: However, the heavenly inheritance possesses [Moral Purity]. It is a 100% holy and clean gift of God, without a speck of sin or evil.

Third, It Fadeth Not Away (amarantos, ἀμάραντος)

• Meaning of the original word: It is a combination of 'a' (without) and 'maraino' (to wither).

• Explanation: This word is derived from the legendary flower that never withers, the 'Amaranth'. All the glory of the world is like a flower. The beauty of youth, the glory of popularity, and the pinnacle of power must all eventually wither and fade.

• Feature of Lively Hope: However, our hope possesses [Temporal Immutability]. Like a flower that bloomed for the first time, the glory we will enjoy in heaven maintains its beauty and vitality forever, even after a thousand or ten thousand years.

2. Because the 'Location' of the Hope Is Absolutely Safe (v.4b)

"...reserved in heaven for you,"

• Dead Hope: Hopes stored on this earth are insecure. Numerous danger factors such as economic crises, thieves, wars, and natural disasters can take away my hope at any time.

• Lively Hope: Our inheritance is "reserved" not on this anxious earth, but "in heaven," the safest place. Because it is kept in God's celestial vault, no disaster in the world can destroy this hope.

3. Because the 'Guarantee' of the Hope Is God's Ironclad Protection (v.5)

"Who are kept by the power of God through faith..."

Even if the inheritance is safe, it is useless if we, the heirs, fall away. However, Peter says that the reason our hope is certain lies in God's "keeping" (protection).

• Meaning of the original word: Phroureō (φρουρέω)

  • The Greek word translated as 'kept' in the text is 'phroureō'. It is not merely caring, but a strong military term.

  • This word carries the meaning 'to garrison a compiled army' or 'to fortify and guard strictly' to protect a castle from enemy attacks. In other words, God is stationing His power like an army to protect us.

• Analogy: God's Power (Fortress) vs. Our Faith (Resident)

  • God's Power (Fortress): What blocks Satan's arrows and the world's attacks is not my thin clothes (my will), but the thick and solid wall, which is God's power. Because this wall is strong, we are safe.

  • Faith (Residing): Then, what is the role of 'faith' here? Faith is not me building the wall. It is the decision to stay inside that strong castle. No matter how strong the wall is, I cannot be protected if I run out of the castle.

• Application: "Saints, being kept through faith does not mean building a shield with the merit of my faith. It is faith to enter the impregnable fortress called 'Jesus Christ' that God has established, to trust Him, and to stay within Him. God is 'phroureō-ing' (strictly guarding) you with His power right now."

Conclusion

Why is our hope a lively hope? Because its content is perfect: it is incorruptible (aphthartos), undefiled (amiantos), and fadeth not away (amarantos). Also, that hope is safely reserved in heaven, and God's military power (phroureō) is protecting us.

Of course, we must stay within that fortress through faith. But remember: Even this faith is not my merit. It is God who called us, who were wandering in the world, and brought us into this safe fortress, and it is God who holds our hearts when we are weak and try to run away.

Therefore, do not look at your weak will, but look at the faithful God who causes us to believe and keeps us to the end. I bless you that you may enjoy this lively hope to the end within Him.
