시의 배경 

 

시편 146편은 시편 전체의 대미(Grand Finale)를 장식하는 마지막 할렐루야 시편들(146~150편)의 시작을 알리는 매우 중요한 찬양시입니다.

• 시편에서의 위치와 성격 제5권의 결론부: 시편 146편부터 150편까지는 매 편이 "할렐루야"로 시작해서 "할렐루야"로 끝납니다. 그래서 학자들은 이 5개의 시편을 최후의 할렐(The Final Hallel)이라고 부릅니다.

• 탄식에서 찬양으로: 시편 전체가 인간의 탄식과 고통(1~2권)에서 시작하여, 마침내 하나님의 통치에 대한 압도적인 찬양(5권)으로 끝나는 구조를 보여주는데, 146편은 그 찬양의 문을 여는 첫 번째 곡입니다.

 

시의 중심 주제 

 

1. 참된 도움의 원천: 흙으로 돌아갈 인생 vs 영원하신 하나님 

• 인생의 허무함: 방백(귀인, 권력자)들은 대단해 보이지만, 결국 호흡이 끊어지면 흙으로 돌아가고 그날에 그들의 모든 계획(도모)도 소멸합니다. 즉, 사람을 의지하는 것은 썩은 동아줄을 잡는 것과 같습니다.
• 하나님의 영원함: 반면에 하나님은 천지를 지으신 창조주이시며, 영원히 진실함을 지키시는 분입니다. 핵심 주제: 그러므로 헛된 인생(사람, 권력, 재물)을 의지하지 말고, 오직 야곱의 하나님을 도움으로 삼는 자가 진정한 복이 있다(5절)는 것입니다.

2. 하나님의 통치 방식: 소외된 자들을 향한 구체적인 돌보심

하나님은 저 높은 곳에서 군림만 하시는 분이 아닙니다. 7절부터 9절까지 하나님이 하시는 일이 구체적인 동사로 나열됩니다.

• 대상: 억눌린 자, 주린 자, 갇힌 자, 맹인, 비굴한 자, 나그네, 고아, 과부. 이들은 사회적으로 가장 힘없고 기댈 곳 없는 자들입니다.
• 행동: 하나님은 정의를 행하시며, 먹을 것을 주시며, 자유롭게 하시며, 눈을 뜨게 하시며, 일으키시고 보호하십니다.

3. 성도의 마땅한 반응: 호흡이 있는 동안 드리는 전인적인 찬양

• 결단: 시편 기자는 하나님이 이런 분(전능자이자 자비로운 왕)이시기에, 나는 상황과 상관없이 내 생전에, 내 평생에 여호와를 찬양하겠다고 결단합니다.
• 영원한 통치: 인간 지도자는 죽어 사라지지만, 시온의 하나님은 대대로 통치하시기에 우리의 찬양도 영원히 계속되어야 합니다.

 

5절의 주해  

 

1. "복이 있도다" 의미:

• 시편 1편 1절과 동일한 단어로, 감정적인 행복(Happiness)을 넘어, 하나님이 인정하시는 '바른 길에 서 있는 상태', 혹은 남들이 부러워할 만한 '객관적인 축복의 상태'를 뜻합니다.
• 세상은 '방백(권력자, 부자)'을 의지할 수 있는 인맥 가진 자를 복되다 하지만, 성경은 그 줄이 끊어질 것을 알기에 하나님을 붙든 자가 진짜 복되다고 선언합니다.

2. 왜 하필 "야곱의 하나님"인가?

• 시편 기자는 아브라함이나 이삭이 아닌 '야곱'을 지칭했습니다. 
• 아브라함은 '믿음', 이삭은 '순종'의 이미지가 강하지만, 야곱은 '험악한 세월'을 살았고, 사기꾼 기질이 있었으며, 얍복 강가에서 처절하게 씨름했던 인물입니다.
• 지렁이 같은 야곱(사 41:14)을 만나주시고 끝까지 책임지신 하나님이기에, 자격 없고 연약한 자들이 붙들 수 있는 유일한 소망이 됩니다.

3. "자기의 도움으로 삼으며"

• '에제르'는 단순히 옆에서 거드는 보조자(Assistant)가 아니라, 물에 빠져 죽어가는 자를 건져내는 '필수적인 구원자(Rescuer)'를 뜻합니다
• 3절에서 "도울 힘이 없는 인생"과 대조됩니다. 사람의 도움은 일시적이고 제한적이지만, 하나님의 도움은 생사를 가르는 절대적인 도움입니다. 하나님을 '옵션'이 아니라 생존을 위한 '유일한 수단'으로 삼는다는 뜻입니다.

4. "소망을 두는 자" 

• "소망"의 단어의 어근인 '사바르(sabar)'는 막연한 기대(Wish)가 아니라, '주의 깊게 기다리다', '확신을 가지고 바라보다'는 뜻입니다.
• 4절에서 인간의 '도모(계획)'는 죽으면 소멸되지만, 하나님께 둔 '소망'은 영원히 소멸되지 않습니다. 땅의 소망이 끊어진 자가 하늘을 향해 던지는 닻과 같습니다.

5. "여호와 자기 하나님"

• 그냥 '하나님'이 아닙니다. '자기(His)' 하나님입니다.
• 나의 하나님(My God)으로 고백하는 개인적이고 인격적인 관계를 강조합니다. 이 관계가 형성된 자만이 하나님을 도움으로 삼을 수 있습니다.

 

결론과 기도 

사랑하는 하나님 아버지

이 세상에서 의지할 것은 사람이 아니라 오직 살아계셔서 공의와 정의로 통치하는 하나님 한 분 뿐임을 다시 한 번 생각하게 됩니다. 

우리의 삶 속에서 얼마나 사람을 의지하려고 하는 지요.

나의 직장 생활 가운데, 생의 어려움 문제 속에서 우리는 본능적으로 나를 도와 줄 사람은 찾습니다. 

그러나 그들도 결국 죽어 흙으로 돌아갈 자이기에, 오직 하나님을 의지하는 것이 얼마나 복이 되는지요.

세상의 어려움과 마음의 고통, 짓눌림의 상황을 하나님 앞에 가져가 아뢸 수 있는 축복이 내게 있음에 감사합니다. 

하나님의 도움을 기대하며, 인내로 기다리는 자는 복이 있습니다. 

참으로, 천지를 창조하시고, 약한 자를 돌보시는 하나님을 나의 하나님으로 인정하고 섬기는 자는 복이 있습니다. 

참으로 저는 복이는 자요, 하나님을 찬송할 수 밖에 없는 자입니다. 

 

 

Background of the Psalm

Psalm 146 is a very significant hymn of praise that signals the beginning of the final "Hallelujah Psalms" (146–150), which decorate the Grand Finale of the entire Book of Psalms.

• Position and Character in the Psalms (Conclusion of Book V): From Psalm 146 to 150, every psalm begins and ends with "Hallelujah." Therefore, scholars call these five psalms "The Final Hallel."

• From Lament to Praise: The Psalms show a structure that begins with human lament and pain (Books 1–2) and concludes with overwhelming praise for God’s reign (Book 5). Psalm 146 is the first song that opens this door of praise.

 

Central Themes of the Psalm

1. The Source of True Help: Life Returning to Dust vs. The Eternal God

• The Vanity of Life: "Princes" (nobles, those in power) may seem great, but eventually, their breath departs, and they return to the earth; on that very day, all their plans (thoughts) perish. Relying on people is like holding onto a rotten rope.

• God’s Eternity: On the other hand, God is the Creator who made the heavens and the earth, and He is the One who remains faithful forever.

• Core Theme: Therefore, do not rely on vain life (people, power, wealth); true blessing belongs to those who make the God of Jacob their help (v. 5).

2. God’s Way of Ruling: Concrete Care for the Marginalized

God is not One who merely reigns from high above. Verses 7 through 9 list concrete verbs describing the work God does.

• Target: The oppressed, the hungry, prisoners, the blind, those who are bowed down, strangers, the fatherless (orphans), and the widow. These are the socially powerless with nowhere to lean.

• Action: God executes justice, gives food, sets prisoners free, opens the eyes of the blind, raises those who are bowed down, and watches over them.

3. The Believer’s Proper Response: Holistic Praise While Breath Remains

• Resolution: Because God is this kind of being (the Almighty and Merciful King), the Psalmist resolves to praise the LORD all his life and as long as he has his being, regardless of his circumstances.

• Eternal Reign: Human leaders die and disappear, but the God of Zion reigns for all generations; therefore, our praise must also continue forever.

 

Exegesis of Verse 5

1. "Blessed is he"

• Meaning: Using the same word as Psalm 1:1 (Ashrei), this signifies a state beyond emotional happiness. It means a "state of standing on the right path" acknowledged by God, or an "objective state of blessing" that others might envy.

• The world says that those with connections to "princes" (the powerful and rich) are blessed, but the Bible declares that the one who holds onto God is truly blessed, knowing that human ropes will break.

2. Why the "God of Jacob"?

The Psalmist refers to "Jacob" rather than Abraham or Isaac.

• God of the Covenant: Abraham has the image of "faith" and Isaac of "obedience," but Jacob lived a "harsh life," possessed a deceiver’s temperament, and wrestled desperately at the Jabbok River.

• Because He is the God who met "Jacob, you worm" (Isaiah 41:14) and took responsibility for him to the very end, He becomes the only hope that the unqualified and weak can hold onto.

3. "Whose help is..."

• 'Ezer' does not simply mean an assistant standing by to help; it means a "Necessary Rescuer" who saves someone drowning in water.

• This contrasts with verse 3 ("in whom there is no help"). Human help is temporary and limited, but God's help is absolute help that determines life or death. It means making God not an "option," but the "only means" of survival.

4. "Whose hope is..."

• The root of the word for "hope," 'Sabar,' does not mean a vague expectation (Wish), but "to wait carefully" or "to look to with conviction."

• In verse 4, human "plans" perish upon death, but "hope" placed in God never perishes. It is like an anchor thrown toward heaven by one whose earthly hope has been cut off.

5. "The LORD his God"

• He is not just "God." He is "his (their)" God.

• This emphasizes a personal and intimate relationship, confessing Him as "My God." Only those who have formed this relationship can truly make God their help.

 

Conclusion and Prayer

Beloved Father God,

I am reminded once again that in this world, the only one to rely on is not people, but solely God, who lives and reigns with righteousness and justice.

How often we try to rely on people in our lives. In the midst of workplace life and the difficulties of existence, we instinctively look for someone to help us. But because they too will eventually die and return to the dust, how blessed it is to rely only on God.

Thank You for the blessing that allows me to bring the difficulties of the world, the pain of my heart, and crushing situations before God and speak to You.

Blessed is the one who expects God’s help and waits with patience. Truly, blessed is the one who acknowledges and serves the Creator of heaven and earth, the Caretaker of the weak, as "My God."

Truly, I am a blessed person, and I am one who cannot help but praise God.
