1. Confession and Cry in Extreme Distress

 

The Psalmist first confesses his dire condition, appealing for God's intervention.

My soul fainteth for thy salvation:

Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

I am become like a bottle in the smoke;

Inwardly, his soul is "fainteth for thy salvation" as deliverance is delayed, and his eyes "fail for thy word" while he awaits comfort. Physically, his suffering is extreme, likening himself to a "bottle in the smoke," dried up and withered. Furthermore, the external threats are severe: "The proud have digged pits for me." Amidst all this agony, the Psalmist cries out, "When wilt thou comfort me?" longing for the realization of divine justice.
