의로운 가지, 우리의 의
본문: 예레미야 23:1–6
서론
오늘 본문은 거짓 목자들에 대한 하나님의 책망과, 참된 목자이신 의로운 가지 곧 예수 그리스도의 약속을 보여줍니다.
하나님께서는 악한 목자들이 자기 유익을 위해 백성을 해치고 흩은 것을 꾸짖으시고, 그 대신 다윗의 자손 가운데서 참된 목자, 의로운 가지를 일으켜 주시겠다고 약속하십니다.
오늘 우리는 이 말씀을 통해 의로운 가지가 누구신지, 그분을 통해 우리가 어떻게 의롭게 되는지, 그리고 그분을 통해 하나님의 통치가 어떻게 이 땅 위에 실현되는지를 함께 배우고자 합니다.
Ⅰ. 거짓 목자들 (1–2절)
하나님은 “이스라엘의 하나님”, 그리고 “내 백성”이라 부르십니다.
이 표현은 단순한 호칭이 아니라 언약 관계를 뜻합니다.
이스라엘은 하나님의 백성이며, 하나님은 그들의 참된 목자이십니다.
그러나 하나님을 대신해 백성을 돌보아야 할 이 땅의 목자들, 곧 왕과 지도자들은 자신의 이익을 위해 양 떼를 해치고 흩어버렸습니다.
“너희가 내 양 떼를 흩으며 쫓아내고 돌보지 아니하였으니”(2절)
그들의 죄는 단순한 도덕적 실수가 아니라 하나님께 대한 언약적 배신이었습니다.
하나님은 그들의 악을 외면하지 않으시고, 직접 심판하십니다.
이는 우리에게 분명한 교훈을 줍니다.
모든 권위는 하나님께로부터 나오며, 그 권위는 하나님을 대신해 섬길 때만 정당합니다.
Ⅱ. 참된 목자 – 의로운 가지 (3–6절)
하나님은 사람의 불의 속에서도 소망을 잃지 않게 하십니다.
그분은 다윗의 후손 가운데서 의로운 가지를 일으키시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.
“내가 다윗에게 한 의로운 가지를 일으킬 것이요, 한 왕이 통치하고 형통하여 땅에서 공의와 정의를 집행하리라.”(5절)
의로운 가지는 누구인가(5절 상)
‘의로운 가지’는 다윗의 후손으로 오실 메시아, 곧 예수 그리스도를 가리킵니다.
이사야와 스가랴서에서도 동일한 표현이 나옵니다.
“이새의 줄기에서 한 가지가 나며”(사 11:1)
“그 이름이 가지라 일컬음을 받을 것이라”(슥 6:12)
이 가지는 단순히 새로운 왕이 아니라 하나님이 친히 세우신 통치자, 참된 목자이십니다.
그분의 통치는 어떤 통치인가(5절 하)
“그가 땅에서 공의와 정의를 집행하리라.”
공의는 하나님의 기준으로 세상을 바로잡는 것입니다.
정의는 하나님의 성품을 닮아 올바르게 살아가는 것입니다.
예수님은 이 공의와 정의를 땅에서, 곧 현실 속에서 실현하십니다.
그분의 통치는 하늘에만 머무는 영적 개념이 아니라 우리의 삶 속에서 실제적인 변화를 이루는 통치입니다.
그분이 통치하실 때 부정이 사라지고, 억울함이 풀리며, 죄인이 의롭다 함을 받습니다.
예수님의 통치는 세상을 바로 세우는 하나님의 손길입니다.
Ⅲ. 우리의 의 (6절)
“그의 이름은 여호와 우리의 의라 일컬음을 받으리라.”(6절)
히브리어로 “여호와 치드케누”(YHWH Tsidkenu), 곧 “The Lord Our Righteousness.”
예수님은 단지 의로운 분이실 뿐 아니라, 우리의 의가 되어 주신 분이십니다.
이사야 53장 11절은 말합니다.
“그가 자기 지식으로 많은 사람을 의롭게 하며 그들의 불법을 담당하리라.”
우리는 스스로 의로워질 수 없습니다.
그러나 예수님이 우리의 죄를 대신 지시고, 의의 옷으로 우리를 덮으셨습니다.
“그분께서 구원의 옷으로 나를 입히시고, 의의 겉옷으로 나를 덮으셨기 때문이라.”(사 61:10)
그래서 이제 우리는 담대히 고백할 수 있습니다.
“여호와는 나의 의!”
Ⅳ. 적용
의로운 가지는 누구입니까?
예수 그리스도, 다윗의 후손이자 참된 왕이십니다.
우리는 어떻게 주의 의를 고백할 수 있습니까?
그분의 의가 우리의 삶을 덮을 때, 우리는 스스로가 아니라 그리스도의 의로 하나님 앞에 설 수 있습니다.
우리는 어떻게 주의 통치를 받습니까?
예수님의 통치는 단지 하늘의 개념이 아니라 우리의 일상 속에서 드러납니다.
우리가 정직하게 말하고, 공평하게 행동하며, 용서하고 사랑할 때 그곳이 바로 하나님의 나라가 임한 자리입니다.
Ⅴ. 결론
예수님은 하늘의 왕이시지만 동시에 땅 위에서 공의와 정의를 행하시는 왕이십니다.
마태복음 1장 21절은 말씀합니다.
“그 이름을 예수라 하라 이는 그가 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원할 자이심이라.”
로마서 3장 24절은 선언합니다.
“그리스도 예수 안에 있는 구속으로 말미암아 하나님의 은혜로 값없이 의롭다 하심을 얻었느니라.”
그리고 예수님은 말씀하셨습니다.
“하나님의 나라는 볼 수 있게 임하지 아니하며, 보라 하나님의 나라는 너희 안에 있느니라.”(누가복음 17:20–21)
하나님의 통치는 지금도 우리 안에, 그리고 우리의 삶 가운데 임하고 있습니다.
로마서 14장 17절은 이렇게 정리합니다.
“하나님의 나라는 먹는 것과 마시는 것이 아니요, 오직 성령 안에서 의와 평강과 기쁨이라.”
그러므로 사랑하는 여러분,
의로운 가지이신 예수 그리스도를 바라보십시오.
The Righteous Branch, The LORD Our Righteousness
Text: Jeremiah 23:1–6
Introduction
Today’s passage reveals the LORD’s rebuke against the false shepherds of Israel and His promise of a true Shepherd—the Righteous Branch, even our Lord Jesus Christ.
The LORD condemns those who have destroyed and scattered His flock for their own gain, yet promises to raise up from the line of David a faithful Shepherd who will rule with righteousness and justice.
Through this passage, we learn who the Righteous Branch is, how we are made righteous through Him, and how God’s kingdom is manifested upon this earth through His reign.
I. The False Shepherds (vv. 1–2)
The LORD calls Himself “the God of Israel” and calls His people “My flock.”
These words express not mere titles but a covenant relationship. Israel belongs to God, and God is their true Shepherd.
Yet the shepherds of the land—the kings and leaders who were to care for God’s people—have destroyed and scattered the flock for their own profit.
“Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them, saith the LORD.”
Their sin was not a mere moral failure; it was a covenantal betrayal against God Himself.
The LORD will not overlook their evil but will personally bring judgment upon them.
This teaches us a solemn truth: all authority comes from God, and it remains valid only when used in humble service before Him.
II. The True Shepherd – The Righteous Branch (vv. 3–6)
Even amid human unrighteousness, God does not leave His people without hope.
He promises to raise up from David’s line a Righteous Branch.
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.”
Who is this Righteous Branch?
He is none other than the Messiah, Jesus Christ—the Son of David and the King of kings.
The prophets spoke of Him long before:

“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse.” (Isaiah 11:1)
-
“Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH.” (Zechariah 6:12)
This Branch is not merely another earthly ruler but the divine King appointed by God Himself.
What kind of reign does He bring?
He “shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.”
“Judgment” means to set the world right according to God’s standards,
and “justice” means to live rightly after God’s own character.
Christ’s rule is not an abstract, heavenly ideal; it is a living reign that transforms our world.
Where He rules, corruption gives way to righteousness, wrongs are made right, and sinners are justified by grace.
The reign of Christ is the hand of God restoring His creation.
III. The LORD Our Righteousness (v. 6)
“And this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
In Hebrew, Jehovah Tsidkenu — YHWH Tsidkenu, “The LORD our Righteousness.”
Jesus is not only righteous in Himself; He is our righteousness.
As Isaiah wrote,
“By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.” (Isaiah 53:11)
We cannot make ourselves righteous.
But Christ bore our sins and clothed us with garments of salvation:
“He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness.” (Isaiah 61:10)
Therefore, we can boldly confess,
“The LORD is my righteousness!”
IV. Application
Who is the Righteous Branch?
He is Jesus Christ—the Son of David, the true Shepherd, and the King of righteousness.
How can we confess, “The LORD is our righteousness”?
When His righteousness covers our lives, we stand before God not by our own merit but through the righteousness of Christ.
How do we live under His reign?
Christ’s kingdom is not confined to heaven; it is manifested in our daily lives.
When we speak truthfully, act justly, forgive freely, and love sincerely, the kingdom of God is revealed among us.
V. Conclusion
Jesus is the King of heaven, yet He reigns also upon the earth, executing judgment and justice.
Matthew 1:21 says,
“Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.”
Romans 3:24 declares,
“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
And our Lord said,
“The kingdom of God cometh not with observation… behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:20–21)
God’s reign is even now present within us and among us.
“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” (Romans 14:17)
Therefore, beloved,
Look unto Jesus—the Righteous Branch, the LORD our Righteousness.
