맹세의 올바른 원칙

1. 맹세는 쉬운 말로 하라

An oath is to be taken in the plain and common sense of the words,

맹세는 쉽고 상식적인 말로 해야 한다.

2. 맹세는 분명하게 의사표현 하라

without equivocation,

두 가지 이상의 의미를 가진 단어나 구를 의도적으로 선택해 다른 사람을 혼란스럽게 해서는 안 된다.

or mental reservation.

자신의 의사를 분명하게 전달할 핵심 단어나 구를 일부러 보류하는 행위를 해서도 안 된다.

3. 맹세는 반드시 지켜라

It cannot oblige to sin;

죄를 짓겠다는 맹세는 해서는 안 된다.

but in anything not sinful being taken,

죄와 관련 없는 선한 맹세라면,

it binds to performance,

반드시 지켜야 한다.

although to a man's own hurt;

비록 자신의 마음이나 이익에 손해가 되더라도 지켜야 한다.

nor is it to be violated, although made to heretics or infidels.

또한 이단자나 불신자에게 한 맹세라도 위반해서는 안 된다.
