오늘 우리는 예수님의 첫 제자들인 베드로, 안드레, 야고보, 요한의 부르심의 과정을 통해,
하나님께서 사람을 어떻게 부르시고, 사람은 그 부르심에 어떻게 응답하게 되는지 함께 살펴보고자 합니다.

마가복음 1장을 보면, 예수님께서 이 네 사람을 부르시는 장면이 나옵니다.
놀랍게도 그들은 예외 없이 예수님의 부르심에 “즉시” 순종합니다(막 1:18, 20).
원어 성경에서 이 “즉시”라는 표현은 “εὐθέως(유데오스)” 단어가 두 군데 분명히 강조되고 있습니다.

이 장면은 매우 인상적이고 이상적으로 보입니다.
마치 하나님의 부르심 앞에 서면 누구나 주저함 없이 모든 것을 버리고 따를 수 있을 것처럼 느껴집니다.

그러나 우리 현실은 그리 단순하지 않습니다.
하나님의 음성은 들리지만, 우리의 마음은 주저할 때가 많고,
“즉시 순종”이라는 표현 앞에서 부담을 느끼기도 합니다.

왜 우리는 즉시 순종하지 못할까요?
오늘 본문은 그 질문에 대해 한 가지 중요한 원리를 보여줍니다.

예수님께서는 제자들에게도 하루아침에 순종을 요구하지 않으셨습니다. 먼저 그들의 삶 속으로 찾아오셔서, 말씀하시고, 치유하시고, 기적을 베푸시며, 그들이 스스로 메시아 되신 예수님을 깨닫고 자발적으로 따르도록 인도하셨습니다.

이제 우리는 제자들의 그 여정을 따라가며, 우리도 어떻게 예수님의 부르심 앞에 순종할 수 있는지 함께 묵상하려 합니다.

 

본론

1. 즉시 순종은 예수님을 인격적으로 만날 때 비로소 가능합니다

제자들의 즉시 순종은 단순한 ‘결단’이 아니었습니다.
그 이면에는 예수님과의 깊은 만남과 인격적인 교제가 자리잡고 있었습니다.

먼저 안드레는 세례 요한의 제자로서 예수님을 처음 따르기 시작했고,
자신의 형제 베드로에게 “우리가 메시야를 만났다”고 고백하며 예수님을 소개합니다(요 1:40–42).

예수님은 이후 베드로의 장모를 고쳐주시며 그의 가정과도 관계를 맺으십니다.
그리고 누가복음 5장에서, 예수님은 베드로에게 말씀하십니다.

“깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡으라.”

베드로는 그 말씀에 순종했고, 기적적인 고기 잡이를 경험하게 됩니다.
그리고 그 순간, 그는 이렇게 고백합니다.

“주여, 나를 떠나소서. 나는 죄인이로소이다.” (눅 5:8)

이 고백은 단순한 당황이나 두려움이 아닙니다.
하나님 앞에서 자신의 존재를 깨달은 영혼의 고백이었습니다.

이처럼 예수님과의 깊은 인격적 만남 없이는 ‘즉시 순종’이 나오기 어렵습니다.

야고보와 요한도 마찬가지였습니다.
그들은 예수님을 세례 요한을 통해 인지했지만, 즉시 따르지는 않았습니다.
누가복음 5장의 기적의 현장에도 있었지만, 여전히 아버지 세베대와 함께 어업을 계속하고 있었습니다.

그러나 예수님은 그들을 서두르거나 강요하지 않으셨습니다.
마침내 마가복음 1장에서 예수님이 정식으로 부르시자,
그들은 그물을 버려두고 즉시 예수님을 따랐습니다.

이 즉시 순종은, 강요가 아닌 믿음의 응답이었습니다.

 

2. 왜 예수님은 “즉시 순종”하기까지 기다려 주시는가?

예수님은 제자들을 강제하거나 조급하게 몰아붙이지 않으셨습니다.
대신 시간을 두고, 삶의 현장에 찾아오시고,
말씀으로, 기적으로, 사랑으로 그들과 관계를 맺으셨습니다.

그 만남을 통해 제자들은 예수님이 단순한 선생이 아닌
자신의 삶 전체를 변화시키실 메시아라는 확신을 갖게 됩니다.

그 신뢰와 믿음 위에서,
제자들은 모든 것을 버리고 예수님을 따르기로 결단합니다.

즉, 자발적 순종이 쌓일 때, 즉시 순종의 결단이 가능한 것입니다.

 

적용

우리도 베드로와 안드레, 요한과 야고보처럼 하루아침에 순종의 자리에 도달하지는 않습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리를 그렇게 인도해 가십니다. 그분은 단번에 모든 것을 요구하시기보다, 우리의 삶에 찾아오시고, 말씀하시고, 깨닫게 하시고, 기다려 주시는 분입니다. 예수님은 지금도 우리 안에 그런 마음을 빚어 가고 계십니다.

 

결론

예수님의 부르심은 단순한 명령이 아니라, 사랑 안에서 깊어지는 인격적 초대입니다. 그 초대에 억지로 반응하는 것이 아니라, 예수님을 알고, 경험하고, 신뢰하면서, 기쁨으로 “예!”라고 응답하는 것을 기다리십니다.
 

Introduction

Today, we reflect on how God calls people and how they come to respond, by looking at the calling of Jesus’ first disciples—Peter, Andrew, James, and John.

In Mark 1, Jesus calls these four men. Surprisingly, all of them respond immediately to His call (Mark 1:18, 20). In the original Greek, the word “eutheōs” (εὐθέως)—meaning “immediately”—is emphasized twice.

The scene feels powerful and ideal—almost as if anyone who hears God’s voice would naturally leave everything behind without hesitation and follow.

But in reality, it's not that simple.
We hear God's voice, yet our hearts hesitate.
The idea of “straightway obedience” can feel heavy and intimidating.

Why is it so hard for us to obey immediately?

Today’s text shows us a key truth:
Immediate obedience is only possible when we personally encounter Jesus.

Even the first disciples were not expected to obey instantly without understanding.
Jesus entered into their lives—speaking, healing, revealing His glory—and led them to recognize Him as the Messiah, worthy of their full devotion.

Let’s now follow the disciples' journey and reflect on how we, too, are called to respond in obedience.

 

Main Body

1. Immediate obedience comes through a personal encounter with Jesus

The disciples’ response was not a shallow decision; it was the fruit of a deep, relational journey.

Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist, and he was the first to follow Jesus. He told his brother Peter,
“We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ” (John 1:41, KJV).

Later, Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law, connecting further with Peter's household.

In Luke 5, Jesus says to Peter:
“Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.” (Luke 5:4, KJV)

Peter obeys, and when he sees the miraculous catch of fish, he falls at Jesus’ feet and says:
“Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” (Luke 5:8, KJV)

This wasn’t fear—it was the soul’s awakened response to divine presence.

Without such personal encounter, “straightway obedience” rarely happens.

James and John followed a similar path.
Though they knew of Jesus through John the Baptist, they didn’t follow immediately.
They were still working with their father in the boat, even during the miraculous catch in Luke 5.

But Jesus did not rush them.

Finally, in Mark 1, when Jesus officially calls them, it says:
“And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.” (Mark 1:20, KJV)

Their obedience was not forced—it was a response of trust.

 

2. Why does Jesus wait for “immediate obedience”?

Jesus never rushed His disciples into obedience.
He stepped into their lives, spoke truth, performed miracles, and loved them patiently.

Through those encounters, the disciples came to believe He was not just a teacher,
but “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” (Matthew 16:16, KJV)

That trust became the foundation for radical obedience.
Voluntary obedience gave rise to immediate obedience.

 

Application

Like the first disciples, we rarely arrive at obedience overnight.
But Jesus doesn’t demand everything at once.
He enters our lives, speaks to us, waits for us, and gently forms us.

He is shaping us, patiently, into people who obey from love.

So don’t be discouraged.
He is working in your heart even now.

 

Conclusion

The call of Jesus is not a cold command—it is an intimate, loving invitation.

He waits not for forced compliance, but for the moment when we know Him, trust Him, and can joyfully say:
“Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth.” (1 Samuel 3:9, KJV)

May we be those who respond—not with hesitation, but with faith.
May we follow—not because we must, but because we love Him who first loved us.
