1. 하나님께서 그들의 눈을 멀게 하시고 마음을 강퍅하게 하십니다

"For former sins, doth blind and harden,"
이전부터 지속된 죄악으로 인해, 하나님께서 그들의 눈을 멀게 하시고 마음을 강퍅하게 만드십니다.

 

1-1. 진리를 깨닫지 못하게 하심

"From them he not only withholdeth his grace, whereby they might have been enlightened in their understandings, and wrought upon in their hearts;"
하나님께서는 그들이 진리를 깨닫고 마음에 감동받을 수 있도록 하는 은혜를 거두어 가십니다.

 

1-2. 은혜의 선물을 거두심

"But sometimes also withdraweth the gifts which they had,"
때때로 하나님께서는 그들에게 주셨던 은혜의 선물들마저 거두어 가십니다.

 

1-3. 죄의 기회에 노출되도록 내버려 두심

"And exposeth them to such objects as their corruption makes occasion of sin;"
하나님께서는 그들의 타락한 본성이 죄에 빠질 수밖에 없는 환경에 그들을 내버려 두십니다.

 

1-4. 정욕과 사탄의 권세에 넘기심

"And withal, gives them over to their own lusts, the temptations of the world, and the power of Satan:"
또한 하나님께서는 그들을 그들 자신의 정욕과 세상의 유혹, 그리고 사탄의 권세에 넘기십니다.

 

2. 하나님께서 그들이 스스로 강퍅해지도록 내버려 두십니다

"Whereby it comes to pass that they harden themselves, even under those means which God useth for the softening of others."
이와 같은 방식으로 인해, 하나님께서 다른 사람들의 마음을 부드럽게 하시는 동일한 수단 아래에서도 그들은 오히려 스스로 더욱 강퍅해집니다.
