지난 시간 우리는 예레미야를 부르시는 하나님을 배웠습니다.
하나님은 예레미야가 모태에 있기 전부터 그를 아시고 남유다와 민족들을 향한 대언자로 부르셨습니다.
하나님의 부르심은 인격적이었습니다.
거절하는 예레미야를 설득하셨습니다.
예레미야가 무엇을 두려워하고, 무엇이 부족하시지를 아시고 격려하시고, 약속하여 주셨습니다.
오늘은 하나님은 예레미야에게 대언자의 태도에 대해 가르쳐 주십니다.
오늘 말씀을 통해 말씀을 받은 자는 어떠한 자세로 말씀을 전해야 하는 지를 배울 수 있습니다.
두려워 말고 전하라
1. 명령받은 대로 말하라 (11–17a)
예레미야는 환상을 통해 하나님의 메시지를 받았습니다.
1) 아몬드 나무의 환상
"아몬드"는 히브리어로 shaqed (שָׁקֵד), "재촉하다"는 히브리어로 shaqad (שָׁקַד). 이 두 단어는 발음이 유사하여 언어유희가 이루어지고 있습니다. 아몬드는 팔레스타인 지역에서 가장 먼저 꽃피는 나무입니다. “재촉하다”는 “주의 깊게 지켜보다”의 의미입니다.
하나님의 심판은 사람이 생각하는 것보다 더 일찍 반드시 실행될 것이라는 의미입니다.
2) 끓는 솥의 환상
북쪽에서부터 끓는 솥이 쏟아져 내리는 모습은 바벨론의 침공과 유다의 심판을 예고합니다. 하나님은 이방 민족도 하나님의 도구로 사용하십니다.
3) 심판의 이유
남유다는 하나님을 버리고, 다른 신에게 분향하며, 자기 손으로 만든 것에 경배하였습니다. 이 모든 죄는 하나님께서 말씀하신 언약을 버리고, 헛된 우상을 섬긴 죄입니다.
오늘날 하나님은 환상으로 우리에게 말씀하지 않으십니다. 그러나 우리는 성경, 곧 완성된 계시의 말씀을 통해 명백한 명령을 받습니다. 하나님은 말씀의 종들을 세우셔서 말씀을 풀어 설명하게 하시며, 우리는 그 말씀을 듣고 순종해야 합니다. 대언자를 대신한 오늘날의 설교자는 하나님의 말씀을 있는 그대로 본의를 살려 잘 전하고, 그 말씀에 따라온 교회가 순종해야 합니다.
2. 사람을 두려워하지 말라 (17b)
1) "두려워하다"
인간적인 연약함에서 오는 두려움, 믿음의 결단에서 물러나는 태도입니다.
2) "당혹스럽게 하다/수치 당하게 하다"
이는 단순한 감정이 아니라, 하나님의 사명을 저버릴 때 허락하실 수 있는 결과입니다. 두려움은 감정이지만, 순종하지 않음은 책임입니다. 하나님은 예레미야에게 "사람을 두려워하지 말라"고 명령하십니다. 그렇지 않으면 하나님께서 사람 앞에서 수치를 당하게 하실 수 있습니다.
3. 영적인 싸움을 싸우라 (18–19a)
1) 하나님의 능력으로 싸울 준비
예레미야는 “방벽을 세운 성읍”, “쇠기둥”, “놋 성벽”으로 세움을 받습니다. 이는 하나님의 영적인 준비와 보호에 대한 약속입니다. 하나님은 우리의 내면을 영적으로 강건하게 하십니다. 하나님을 믿고 싸우라는 격려의 약속을 주십니다.
2) "치다"
단순히 물리적인 타격이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀으로 죄를 정죄하고 책망하는 권세입니다. 대언자 예레미야는 이 말씀의 검으로 죄를 '쳤습니다'.
3) "싸우다"
이는 “전쟁을 벌이다, 싸우다”라는 뜻입니다. 이 의미는 ‘생존을 위한 싸움’을 싸우라는 의미입니다. 목숨을 걸고 영적 전투에 임하라는 절박함과 비장함을 느끼게 합니다.
4) "함께 하다"
하나님은 그 싸움터에 직접 함께 하신다고 약속하십니다. 우리가 하나님의 영적 전투의 현장으로 나갈 때 하나님도 함께 하십니다. 우리가 나가지 않고, 싸우지 않으면 하나님도 우리를 위해 싸우지 못하십니다. 하나님은 우리를 도와 주시는 보조자이십니다. 내가 주도권을 쥐고 먼저 일어서야 합니다.
4. 하나님의 구원을 경험하라 (19b)
예레미야의 싸움은 왕들과 백성들의 지도자들과 제사장들과 백성들과의 싸움이었습니다. 이는 전 나라를 상대로 개인이 싸우는 것과 같습니다. 이는 계란으로 바위를 치는 것과 같이 불가능해 보이는 싸움입니다. 우리가 마음으로 불가능하다 생각할지라도 하나님은 가능합니다. “불가능하다”고 생각하는 나의 마음을 극복해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님 안에서는 불가능이 없기 때문입니다. 하나님의 명령 받은 대로 순종할 때 하나님의 놀라운 "건져 주심"을 경험하게 됩니다. 이런 체험이 우리에게 있어야 합니다.
나는 지금 어떤 싸움 앞에 주저하고 있습니까? 사람의 반응을 두려워하며 하나님의 말씀을 전하지 못하고 있지는 않습니까? 말씀에 순종하여 영적인 싸움을 싸울 때 하나님의 함께 하심을 체험하고 있습니까?
오늘 우리는 예레미야를 통해 말씀을 받은 자의 태도가 어떠해야 하는 지를 배웠습니다. 첫째는 명령받은 그대로 행하는 것입니다. 둘째는 사람을 두려워하지 말아야 합니다. 셋째는 영적인 싸움을 싸워야 합니다. 마지막으로, 이 모든 과정 속에서 하나님이 주시는 영적인 건져주심, 승리를 경험해야 합니다.
Last time, we learned about the God who called Jeremiah.
God knew Jeremiah even before he was formed in the womb and called him to be a prophet to Judah and the nations.
God’s calling was personal.
He persuaded Jeremiah, who was reluctant.
God knew what Jeremiah feared and what he lacked, and He encouraged him and gave him promises.
Today, God teaches Jeremiah about the attitude of a prophet.
Through today's message, we can learn how those who receive the Word must proclaim it.
Fear Not, But Proclaim
1. Speak as You Are Commanded (vv. 11–17a)
Jeremiah received God’s message through visions.
1) The Vision of the Almond Tree
“Almond” in Hebrew is shaqed (שָׁקֵד), and “to hasten” is shaqad (שָׁקַד). These two words are a wordplay with similar sounds. The almond is the tree that blooms earliest in Palestine.
“To hasten” also carries the meaning “to watch attentively.”
This signifies that God's judgment will surely come, and sooner than man expects.
“Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.” (Jeremiah 1:12)
2) The Vision of the Boiling Pot
The boiling pot pouring out from the north foretells the Babylonian invasion and the judgment upon Judah.
God uses even Gentile nations as His instruments.
“Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.” (Jeremiah 1:14)
3) The Reason for Judgment
Judah forsook God, burned incense to other gods, and worshiped the works of their own hands.
All these were sins of breaking the covenant God had spoken and serving vain idols.
“They have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, and worshipped the works of their own hands.” (Jeremiah 1:16)
Today, God does not speak to us through visions, but through the Bible—the completed revelation.
We receive clear commands through Scripture. God appoints ministers of the Word to explain and preach, and we must listen and obey.
Today’s preachers, who stand in the place of the prophets, must faithfully declare the meaning of God’s Word as it is, and the church must obey that Word.
2. Do Not Fear Man (v. 17b)
1) “Be not afraid of their faces”
This fear comes from human weakness and a reluctance to commit in faith.
“Be not afraid of their faces.” (Jeremiah 1:8)
2) “Lest I confound thee before them”
This is not just about emotion; it is the result God may allow if one abandons His calling.
Fear is an emotion, but disobedience is a responsibility.
God commands Jeremiah not to fear man—otherwise, God may let him be put to shame before them.
“Lest I confound thee before them.” (Jeremiah 1:17)
3. Fight the Spiritual Battle (vv. 18–19a)
1) Prepared by God’s Power
God makes Jeremiah a “defenced city,” an “iron pillar,” and “brasen walls.”
This is God's promise of spiritual preparation and protection.
God strengthens us inwardly and encourages us to fight with faith.
“For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and brasen walls against the whole land.” (Jeremiah 1:18)
2) “They shall fight against thee”
This is not merely physical conflict, but a spiritual confrontation, condemning and rebuking sin with the sword of the Word.
“They shall fight against thee.” (Jeremiah 1:19)
3) “But I am with thee”
This means God will be present on the battlefield.
If we step out to fight the spiritual battle, God goes with us.
If we do not go out or fight, God will not fight for us.
God is our Helper, but we must take the initiative and rise first.
“But I am with thee, saith the LORD.” (Jeremiah 1:19)
4. Experience God's Deliverance (v. 19b)
Jeremiah's battle was against kings, princes, priests, and the people—it was like one man fighting an entire nation.
It seemed as impossible as striking a rock with an egg.
Even if we think in our hearts that it is impossible, with God it is possible.
We must overcome our hearts that say “It is impossible,”
because with God nothing is impossible.
When we obey God's command, we will experience His miraculous deliverance.
We need this kind of experience.
“They shall not prevail against thee; for I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.” (Jeremiah 1:19)
What battle am I hesitating to fight right now?
Am I fearing people’s reactions and thus failing to proclaim God’s Word?
When I obey the Word and fight the spiritual battle, do I experience that God is with me?
Today, through Jeremiah, we have learned the proper attitude of those who receive God's Word.
First, we must speak as commanded.
Second, we must not fear man.
Third, we must fight the spiritual battle.
Finally, in all these processes, we must experience the spiritual deliverance and victory that God gives.
