이스라엘 백성이 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀갔을 때,
그들의 세상은 완전히 무너졌습니다.
성전은 불타 사라지고, 왕은 사라졌으며,
하나님께서 함께하신다는 “언약 백성”의 정체성마저 흔들렸습니다.

그들은 스스로에게 물었습니다.

“하나님은 우리를 버리신 걸까?”
“그분의 언약은 끝난 걸까?”

절망과 수치, 죄책감 속에서
그들은 잊힌 존재처럼 느껴졌습니다.
그러나 하나님은 그들의 마음에 희망의 불씨를 남기셨습니다.

포인트 2. “기억하시리로다” — 하나님의 신실하심의 선언

그러나 바로 그때, 하나님은 포로들의 귀를 열어 말씀하셨습니다 —

“내가 언약을 잊지 않았다.”

이 고백이 바로 시편 111편에 담겨 있습니다.

“그분께서 자신을 두려워하는 자들에게 먹을 것을 주셨으며,
자신의 언약을 영원히 기억하시리로다.” (시 111:5)

히브리어 원어 의미:

• יְזכֹּר (yizkor, 기억하시리로다) — 단순한 회상이 아니라 언약을 마음에 두고 지금도 이루시는 행동
   

• בְּרִית (berit, 언약) — 하나님이 결코 깨지 않으시는 사랑과 관계의 약속
   

포로에서 돌아온 유대인들은 여전히 폐허 위에 있었지만,

“하나님은 우리를 잊지 않으셨다.”

그분의 ‘기억하심’은 구원의 행동으로 나타났습니다.
절망 속에서도 하나님의 신실하심이 희망으로 변했습니다.

포인트 3. “주를 두려워하는 것이 지혜의 시작이라” — 현실 속 경외의 삶

 

바벨론에서 돌아온 유대인들은 깨달았습니다.
그들을 무너뜨린 것은 외적 적이 아니라,
하나님을 경외하지 않은 마음이었습니다.

오늘 우리도 결심해야 합니다.

“어떠한 상황 속에서도 언약의 하나님을 신뢰하며 기다리고,
모든 것을 하나님께 맡기는 삶으로 살리라.
지혜의 시작은 하나님을 경외함에서 나오리라.”

 

 

Point 1. The Babylonian Exile — Deep Despair and the Lost Identity of God’s People

When the children of Israel were carried away into Babylon,
their world was utterly broken.
The temple was burned, the king was gone,
and even their identity as the covenant people of the LORD was shaken.

They said among themselves,

“Hath the LORD forsaken us?”
“Hath His covenant failed?”

In the midst of despair, shame, and guilt,
they felt as men forgotten.
Yet the LORD left a spark of hope in their hearts.

Point 2. “He Will Remember” — A Declaration of God’s Faithfulness

But at that time, the LORD opened the ears of the captives, and spake unto them:

“I have not forgotten my covenant.”

This is expressed in Psalm 111:5:

“He hath given meat unto them that fear him:
he will ever be mindful of his covenant.” (Psalm 111:5, KJV)

Hebrew original meaning:

• יְזכֹּר (yizkor, “he will remember”) — not merely recalling, but keeping the covenant in His heart and fulfilling it

• בְּרִית (berit, “covenant”) — God’s unbreakable promise of love and relationship

Though the returning exiles still beheld ruins,

“God had not forgotten us.”

His remembering became an act of salvation.
Even in the midst of despair, God’s faithfulness became their hope.

The children of Israel who returned from Babylon learned
that it was not outward enemies that truly destroyed them,
but hearts that feared not the LORD.

Today, we must also make this vow:

“In whatsoever situation I am, I will trust the God of the covenant, wait patiently,
and commit all things into His hands.
The beginning of wisdom is to fear the LORD.”
