1. 마스길의 의미
마스길(משְׂגִּל)은 히브리어로 ‘명철한 자’ 또는 ‘깨우침을 주는 자’를 뜻합니다.
성경에서는 지혜와 교훈을 담은 노래나 시를 가리키며, 하나님께서 행하신 진리와 신앙의 깨달음을 다음 세대에 전하는 중요한 역할을 합니다.
본문에 나오는 말씀처럼,
“다가올 세대 곧 태어날 자손들이 그것들을 알게 하려 하심이라”
마스길은 하나님께서 행하신 구원의 역사를 기억하고, 신앙을 다음 세대로 이어가도록 돕는 교육적 전통인 셈입니다.
2. 교육의 목적
마스길의 교육은 다음 네 가지 목적을 지니고 있습니다.

소망을 하나님 안에 두게 하기 위해
“그들이 자기들의 소망을 [하나님] 안에 두고”

하나님께서 행하신 일들을 잊지 않게 하기 위해
“[하나님]께서 행하신 일들을 잊지 아니하며”

하나님의 명령을 지키게 하기 위해
“그분의 명령들을 지켜서”

과거 세대의 부정적 본을 반복하지 않게 하기 위해
“완고하고 반역하는 세대요, 자기 마음을 바르게 하지 아니하고 [하나님]을 향해 영을 확고히 세우지 않은 세대와 같이 되지 않게 하려 함이로다.”
3. 우리의 과제
오늘날 우리 역시 신앙을 다음 세대에 전수하고, 그들이 다시 그들의 후손에게 신앙을 물려주도록 해야 할 책임이 있습니다.
우리는 말씀을 통해 신앙 교육의 분명한 목적을 배웠습니다.
하지만 이를 가정과 교회에서 어떻게 구체적으로 실천할 것인가는 우리의 중요한 과제입니다.
가정과 교회는 분명한 목적과 목표 의식을 가지고, 이를 위해 체계적인 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하며 실제로 실천해 나가야 할 것입니다.

Pass the Faith to the Next Generation
1. The Meaning of Maskil
Maskil (מַשְׂכִּיל) is a Hebrew word meaning “a man of insight” or “one who gives understanding.”
In the Bible, it refers to psalms or songs that contain wisdom and instruction,
serving as a means to pass down God’s truth and spiritual insight to the next generation.
As the Scripture says,
“That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born;
who should arise and declare them to their children:”
(Psalm 78:6, KJV)
Maskil is an educational tradition that helps God’s people remember His saving works
and pass their faith to the next generation.
2. The Purpose of Education
The Maskil conveys four purposes of spiritual education:

To set their hope in God
“That they might set their hope in God” (Psalm 78:7a, KJV)

To remember the works of God
“And not forget the works of God” (Psalm 78:7b, KJV)

To keep the commandments of God
“But keep his commandments” (Psalm 78:7c, KJV)

To avoid repeating the failures of the past generation
“And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation;
a generation that set not their heart aright,
and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.” (Psalm 78:8, KJV)
3. Our Task
Today, we also bear the responsibility of passing our faith to the next generation,
so that they, in turn, may pass it down to their descendants.
Through God’s Word, we have learned the clear purpose of spiritual education.
Yet how to practice this faithfully in our homes and churches remains our important task.
Both the family and the church must move forward with clear purpose and goals,
developing systematic programs, applying them, and putting them into consistent practice.
