패배의 자리에서 다시 일어나는 믿음

 

시의 배경

 

시편 60편의 배경은 사무엘하 8:3~14, 역대상 18:3~14절에 기록되어 있습니다.

아람나하리임

“아람 나하라임”의 의미는 ‘두 강 사이에 있는 아람’ 혹은 ‘두 강의 아람’입니다.

여기서 “두 강”은 일반적으로 고대 근동에서 티그리스강과 유프라테스강을 가리킵니다.

즉, 오늘날 이라크 북부와 시리아 동부, 터키 남동부 일대의 메소포타미아 지역을 의미합니다.

성경에서 아람 나하라임은 종종 아브라함의 고향 하란(Haran) 근처, 혹은 메소포타미아 북서부 지역을 가리킵니다 (창세기 24:10 등).

아람소바

“아람”은 앞서 말한 대로 아람 민족 또는 아람 지역을 뜻합니다.

“소바 (Sobah)”는 도시명 또는 특정 부족 이름으로 보입니다.

일부 학자들은 “소바”가 메소포타미아 북서부나 시리아 북부 지역의 소규모 도시국가 혹은 부족일 것으로 추정합니다.

교훈을 주기 위하여 지은 시

이 시는 교훈을 주기 위한 시라고 제목에 분명히 언급하고 있습니다. 시편 60편에는 다윗이 아람세력과 북쪽에서 싸우고 있을 때, 남쪽 에돔의 공격했을 가능성을 시사합니다. 그리고 그 과정에서 이스라엘이 패배했음을 암시하는 구절이 나옵니다.

“주께서 우리를 내던져 흩으시고 우리를 기뻐하지 아니하셨사오나(1절)

“주께서 주의 백성에게 어려운 일들을 보이시고 우리로 하여금 놀라게 하는 포도즙을 마시게”

다윗은 급히 군대장관 요압과 다른 장군들을 보내 에돔을 물리칩니다.

“오 [하나님]이여, 주께서 우리를 내던져 흩으시고 우리를 기뻐하지 아니하셨사오나 오 친히 우리에게로 다시 돌아오소서(1절)”

시편 60편은 인간의 실패와 혼란 속에서 하나님의 주권과 은혜를 다시 붙잡고, 참된 도움은 오직 하나님께 있음을 고백하는 신앙의 태도를 가르칩니다. 삶의 전쟁터에서 낙심 대신 하나님을 바라보며 다시 일어날 수 있음을 일깨웁니다.

 

시의 내용  

 

[4절] “주께서 주를 두려워하는 자들에게 깃발을 주심은 진리로 인하여 그것을 펼치게 하려 하심이니이다. 셀라.”

 

[직역] “당신을 경외하는 자들에게 깃발을 주셨으니, 그것이 활(의 위협) 앞에서 높이 휘날리게 하려 하심이니다. 셀라.”

“활”은 전쟁, 위협, 공격을 상징합니다.

그 속에서 깃발을 높이 드는 것은 하나님을 경외하는 자들이 두려움 속에서도 하나님의 통치를 드러내며 진리를 선포하는 모습입니다.

“셀라”는 이 진리를 깊이 묵상하라는 부름입니다.

[9절] 누가 나를 저 견고한 도시 안으로 데려갈까? 누가 나를 에돔 안으로 인도할까?

다윗은 신하들을 통해 국경 저지선의 만 이천명을 죽였습니다. 에돔 주력을 처리한 것입니다. 그러나 여전히 에돔의 성은 난공불락의 요새입니다.

오바댜 1:3–4, 예레미야 49:16 등에서는 에돔의 바위 요새에 의한 자만이 강조됩니다:

“너의 마음의 교만이 너를 속였도다, 바위 틈에 거하며 높은 곳에 사는 자여… 내가 독수리처럼 높이 올라가며 별 사이에 둥지를 지어도, 내가 거기서 너를 끌어내리리라.” (오바댜 1:3–4)

 

[11절] 사람의 도움은 헛되나이다.

[12절] 우리가 [하나님]을 의지하여 용감히 행하리니

난공불락의 요새 앞에 다윗은 낙심하거나 좌절하지 않았습니다

11절은 인간적 도움에 의존하지 말고, 오직 하나님만이 참된 구원이심을 인정하라는 의미입니다. 12절은 하나님의 힘을 의지할 때 참된 용기를 가지게 되며, 이런 믿음의 행동은 결국 승리를 가져온다는 의미입니다.

 

성경은 다윗의 군대가 에돔과의 초기 교전에서 왜 ‘실패했는가?’에 침묵하고 있습니다.

아마도 여러 이유들이 있었을거지만, 성경은 그것은 중요하지 않다고 생각했기 때문입니다.

중요한 것은 실패와 혼란 뒤에 어떤 믿음의 자세를 가지는 것을 성경은 더 중요하게 생각합니다.

실패와 낙심의 자리에서 일어나서 하나님을 믿고 도전하는 것이 중요합니다.

이것이 시편 60편이 우리에게 가르쳐 주는 교훈입니다.

Background of the Psalm

The background of Psalm 60 is recorded in 2 Samuel 8:3–14 and 1 Chronicles 18:3–14.

Aram-Naharaim

The term “Aram-Naharaim” means “Aram between the two rivers” or “Aram of the two rivers.”
These two rivers generally refer to the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in the ancient Near East.
This region corresponds to what is today northern Iraq, eastern Syria, and southeastern Turkey—known as Mesopotamia.
In the Bible, Aram-Naharaim often points to the area near Haran, Abraham’s hometown, or the northwestern Mesopotamian region (Genesis 24:10, etc.).

Aram-Soba

“Aram” refers to the Aramean people or region, as mentioned above.
“Soba” is likely the name of a city or a particular tribe.
Some scholars suggest that Soba was a small city-state or tribe in northwestern Mesopotamia or northern Syria.

 

A Psalm Written for Teaching 

Psalm 60 is explicitly described as a psalm written for instruction.
It hints that while David was fighting Aramean forces in the north, the Edomites from the south may have attacked.
The psalm also suggests that Israel suffered defeat in this conflict.

“Thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again.” (Psalm 60:1)

David then urgently sends Joab, the army commander, and other generals to defeat Edom.

“O God, thou hast cast us off, thou hast scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again.” (Psalm 60:1, KJV)

Psalm 60 teaches the attitude of faith to grasp God’s sovereignty and grace again amid human failure and confusion.
It reminds us that true help comes only from God and encourages us to look to Him and rise again instead of losing heart in the battles of life.

 

Contents of the Psalm

Verse 4

“Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.” (Psalm 60:4, KJV)
Raising the banner high means that those who fear God proclaim His rule and truth boldly even in the midst of fear.
“Selah” calls the reader to meditate deeply on this truth.

 

Verse 9

“Who will bring me into the strong city? who will lead me into Edom?” (Psalm 60:9, KJV)

David killed twelve thousand at the border line through his officials, defeating the main Edomite forces.
Yet the city of Edom remains a fortress difficult to conquer.
Obadiah 1:3–4 and Jeremiah 49:16 emphasize Edom’s pride in their rocky fortress:

“The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock... Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle... I will bring thee down, saith the LORD.” (Obadiah 1:3–4, KJV)

 

Verses 11–12

“Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.” (Psalm 60:11–12, KJV)

David did not despair or lose heart in front of the seemingly impregnable fortress.
Verse 11 means we should not rely on human help but recognize that only God is the true Savior.
Verse 12 means when we depend on God’s strength, we gain true courage, and such faith-filled actions ultimately lead to victory.

 

The Bible remains silent about why David’s army initially failed against Edom.
There may have been many reasons, but the Bible considers that unimportant.
What matters more is the posture of faith after failure and confusion.
It is crucial to rise from failure and discouragement, trust God, and continue to face the challenge.
This is the lesson Psalm 60 teaches us.
