1. 시의 배경: 점점 더 깊어지는 배신의 단계

시편 55편은 인간관계에서 가장 고통스러운 감정 중 하나인 ‘배신’을 주제로 합니다.

• 시편 53편에서는 도엑의 배신,
• 시편 54편에서는 동족의 배신,
• 시편 55편에서는 가장 가까웠던 친구의 배신이 등장합니다.

시편은 이처럼 점점 더 깊고 고통스러운 배신의 단계를 보여줍니다. 시인의 감정도 점점 복잡해지고 격렬해지며, 내면의 깊은 번민을 토로하게 됩니다. 하지만 그는 그 속에서도 하나님의 해결책을 찾고자 합니다. 오늘 우리는 그 하나님의 해결책이 무엇인지 함께 살펴보겠습니다.

 

2. 내가 짐을 질 때

1) 마음 깊은 곳에서 터져 나오는 슬픔 (1–2절)

• “원망하는 중에” – 이 단어는 ‘속삭이다’, ‘묵상하다’, ‘불평하다’, ‘탄식하다’ 등 다양한 의미를 가지며, 내면의 고민을 하나님께 토로하거나 마음속으로 곱씹는 행위를 나타냅니다.
• “애곡” – 단순한 눈물이 아니라, 몸을 떨며 울부짖는 깊은 슬픔의 외적 표현입니다.
• 시인의 마음은 상처와 고통으로 인해 하나님 앞에서 쏟아져 나오듯 애절하게 울부짖습니다.

 

2) 죽음의 그림자가 드리운 공포 (3–5절)

• “내 마음이 내 속에서 심히 아프며” – 감정의 균형이 무너지고, 산통을 겪는 산모처럼 뒤틀리는 내면의 고통을 표현합니다.
• “사망의 두려움들이 나를 엄습하였나이다” – 단순한 불안이 아닌, 생명의 위협을 느끼는 극도의 공포입니다.
• “무서움과 떨림이 내게 이르렀고... 공포가 나를 눌렀나이다” – 두려움이 신체적인 반응으로 나타나며, 마음과 몸이 모두 압도되어 마비된 상태가 됩니다.
• 이는 도시 한가운데서 벌어지는 폭력과 분쟁(9–10절) 때문일 수 있습니다.

 

3) 도망치고 싶은 영혼의 피로 (6절)

• “오 내게 비둘기같이 날개가 있다면...” – 비둘기는 광야에서 조용히 사는 새입니다. 시인은 세상의 소란과 고통에서 벗어나 한적한 곳에서 쉼을 얻기를 간절히 바라고 있습니다. 누구나 고통과 두려움이 몰려올 때, 어디론가 도망가고 싶은 마음이 들기 마련입니다. 시인은 현실을 회피하고 싶은 지경까지 고통을 느낍니다.

 

4) 친구의 배신으로 인한 찢어지는 고통 (12–15절)

• “원수였더라면 내가 참을 수 있었으리로다...”
• “나와 동등한 자, 나의 안내자, 내가 아는 자” – 외부의 적이 아니라, 가까운 친구의 배신은 더 큰 상처로 다가옵니다. 신뢰가 깨졌을 때 오는 충격과 상실감은 말로 다 할 수 없습니다.
• “사망이 그들을 붙들어서 지옥에 내려가게 하소서” – 이는 인간적인 보복이 아니라, 하나님께서 공의로 심판해 주시기를 간구하는 간절한 호소입니다. 그들의 악행이 극에 달했기에 하나님의 심판을 구합니다.

 

3. 하나님께 짐을 맡길 때

“네 짐을 주께 맡기라” (22절)

• “맡기라” – 단순히 올려놓는 것이 아니라, 내던지듯 강하게 넘긴다는 의미입니다. 감정과 인생의 무게를 스스로 붙들지 않고, 완전히 하나님께 넘기는 행위입니다.
• “그분께서 너를 붙드시고”
  ‘붙들다’는 단순한 위로가 아니라, 삶 전체를 지속적으로 지탱하시는 하나님의 돌보심을 뜻합니다.
• “그분께서 의로운 자가 흔들리는 것을 결코 허락하지 아니하시리로다” 여기서 “흔들림”은 도덕적·영적 기반이 무너지는 상태입니다. 하나님은 믿는 자가 그 기반에서 무너지지 않도록 끝까지 붙드십니다.

 

4. 하나님께 짐을 맡기는 방법 (17절)

“저녁과 아침과 정오에 내가 기도하고 크게 부르짖으리니, 그분께서 내 음성을 들으시리로다.”

• 히브리인의 시간 개념에서 하루는 저녁부터 시작합니다.
• “저녁–아침–정오”는 곧 하루 전체를 통틀어 드리는 기도를 말합니다.
• 단순히 하루 한 번의 기도가 아니라, 끊임없고 반복적이며 인내하는 기도입니다.
• 이것은 바울이 말한 “쉬지 말고 기도하라”(살전 5:17)는 권면과 연결됩니다.

 

5. 결론: 우리도 짐을 주께 맡기자

우리의 감정은 억지로 사라지지 않습니다.
마치 물속에 풍선을 억지로 누르면 다시 떠오르듯, 억눌린 감정은 결국 터져 나오게 됩니다.

우리도 비록 시편 기자처럼 죽음의 공포까지는 아닐지라도,
삶의 무게, 인간관계의 갈등, 이해받지 못함, 억울함으로 인해 좌절하고 낙심하며 영혼의 공황 상태에 빠질 수 있습니다.

그때 시편 55편은 우리에게 이렇게 말합니다:

“네 짐을 주께 맡기라.”

하나님은 그 짐을 능히 지시며,
너를 붙드시고,
너를 흔들리지 않게 하실 것이다.

 

마지막 권면

하나님은 우리의 감정을 부정하지 않으십니다.
오히려 그것을 ‘그분께 던지듯’ 맡기라고 하십니다.

그분은 우리의 감정보다 크시고, 삶의 무게보다 강하십니다.
오늘, 나의 짐을 하나님께 온전히 맡기는 결단이 있기를 바랍니다.

 

Background of the Psalm: The Deepening Stages of Betrayal
Psalm 55 deals with one of the most painful human emotions: betrayal.

• Psalm 53 describes the betrayal of Doeg,
• Psalm 54 presents betrayal by fellow countrymen,
• Psalm 55 reveals the betrayal by a close friend.
  These psalms show a progressive deepening of betrayal—each more intimate and painful than the last. The psalmist's emotions become increasingly complex and intense, expressing deep inner anguish. Yet even in this torment, he seeks God's remedy. Today, we will explore what that divine solution is.

 

2. When I Bear the Burden

1) Sorrow Bursting from the Depth of the Heart (vv. 1–2)

• “I mourn in my complaint” – The word "complaint" also conveys meanings such as “to meditate,” “to grumble,” “to sigh,” or “to muse.” It reflects pouring out inner turmoil to God or silently dwelling on it in the heart.
• “And make a noise” – This is not a quiet weeping, but a loud, trembling cry expressing deep sorrow.
• The psalmist’s heart cries out before God, overwhelmed by wounds and pain.

2) Terror Under the Shadow of Death (vv. 3–5)

• “My heart is sore pained within me” – This depicts a collapse of emotional balance, like the convulsions of a woman in labor.
• “The terrors of death are fallen upon me” – Not just anxiety, but extreme fear in the face of a threat to life.
• “Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me” – Fear manifests physically, paralyzing both mind and body.
• This may be due to the violence and strife occurring in the city (vv. 9–10).

3) A Soul Weary and Wishing to Flee (v. 6)

• “Oh that I had wings like a dove!” – The dove is a quiet creature that lives in solitude. The psalmist longs to escape the noise and pain of the world and find rest in a quiet place.
  In times of suffering and fear, we all feel the urge to run. The psalmist is in such distress that he wishes to flee from reality.

4) The Tearing Pain of a Friend's Betrayal (vv. 12–15)

• “For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it...”
• “But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.”
  – Betrayal by an enemy can be endured, but betrayal by a close friend cuts deeply. The shock and grief from broken trust are beyond words.
• “Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell” – This is not a cry for personal revenge, but a plea for divine justice. The psalmist calls for God to judge their wickedness, which has reached its peak.

 

3. When You Cast Your Burden upon God
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD” (v. 22)

• “Cast” – This implies not just placing, but forcefully throwing off. It is a decisive act of surrendering the weight of life and emotions to God, rather than holding onto it yourself.
• “And he shall sustain thee” – To sustain means more than comfort; it means that God will uphold your entire life with continual care.
• “He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” – To be “moved” here means to be shaken from one’s moral or spiritual foundation. God promises to uphold those who trust in Him, so they will not collapse.

 

4. How to Cast Your Burden upon God (v. 17)
“Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.”

• In Hebrew thought, the day begins at evening.
• “Evening, morning, and noon” thus represent continual prayer throughout the day.
• This is not a one-time act, but a persistent, repeated, and patient prayer life.
• It echoes Paul’s exhortation: “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

 

5. Conclusion: Let Us Also Cast Our Burdens Upon the Lord
Our emotions do not disappear by force.
Just like a balloon underwater eventually bursts back to the surface, suppressed emotions will also rise again.
Even if we don’t experience the terror of death as the psalmist did,
we may still fall into spiritual panic due to the burdens of life, relational conflicts, injustice, or the pain of being misunderstood.

In those moments, Psalm 55 tells us:
“Cast thy burden upon the LORD.”
God is able to bear that burden,
He will sustain you,
and He will not allow you to be shaken.

 

Final Exhortation
God does not deny or ignore our emotions.
Rather, He calls us to cast them—forcefully and fully—upon Him.
He is greater than our emotions, stronger than the weight of our life.
May today be the day you make a full surrender of your burdens to Him.
