시의 내용
1. 구원의 체험(v1~2)
시인은 과거 하나님께서 자신을 구원해 주신 체험을 언급하고 있습니다.
시인은 끈기 있게 기다리며 기도했습니다.
하나님은 다윗의 기도를 들으셨습니다.
무서운 구덩이와 진흙 수렁에서 나를 끌어올리시며 반석 위에 두셨습니다.
2. 새 노래로 찬양(v2~5)
시인은 자신의 구원을 새노래로 찬양합니다.
과거가 아닌 현재의 감격과 기쁨은 새노래입니다.
주께서 자신을 행하신 놀라운 일들을 찬양하고 있습니다.
3. 새 노래에서 헌신으로(v6~10)
1) “내 귀를 주께서 여셨고(6)”
이는 하나님의 음성을 들었다 의미입니다.
귀가 막혀서, 하나님의 음성을 듣지 못했지만, 이제는 듣는다는 것입니다.
“번제 헌물과 죄 헌물은 주께서 요구하지” 않는다는 것을 깨닫았습니다.
순종과 하나님을 기뻐하며 신뢰하는 것을 더 귀하게 여기심을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
2) “두루마리 책에 나를 가리켜 기록된 것이 있나이다(7)”
“두루마리 책”은 ‘모세오경’, 하나님께서 그 백성에게 주신 ‘율법’, 혹은 구약의 말씀을 의미합니다
하나님의 말씀을 통해 자신이 해야 할 사명을 발견합니다.
3) “주의 법이 내 마음속에 있나이다(8)
시인은 자신의 사명이 자신의 마음속에 담겼습니다.
주님의 뜻을 행하기를 기뻐합니다.
4) “내가 큰 회중 가운데서 의를 선포하였사오니(9)”
“주의 인자하심과 주의 진리를 그 큰 회중에게 감추지 아니하였나이다(10).”
시인은 구원의 은혜를 자신에게만 머물러 있게 할 수 없습니다.
공동체로 나아가 주의 인자와 진리를 선포하였습니다.
4. 당면한 현실(11~15)
“셀 수 없이 많은 재앙들이 시인을 에워싸고 있습니다(12).
1) 내적인 어려움
“내 불법들이 나를 붙들므로(12)”
“내 머리털보다 많으므로 내가 낙심하나이다(12)”
2) 외적인 어려움
“내 혼을 찾아 멸하려 하는 자들은(14)”
“나를 향하여, 아하, 아하, 하는 자들”
5. 또 다시 기도로(16~17)
1) “비록 내가 가난하고 궁핍할지라도(17)”
“가난하고 궁핍하다”는 의미는 자신이 아무것도 아니라는 의미입니다.
한 마디로 ‘nothing’입니다.
2) “오 나의 [하나님]이여, 지체하지 마옵소서(17).”
시편 40편은 이 시대 우리의 신앙을 노래하고 있는 것 같습니다.
우리는 교만하여 하나님을 알지 못했습니다.
하나님께서 여러 어려움들을 통해 우리를 낮추시고 반석 되신 예수님을 알게 하셨습니다.
우리는 새노래로 찬양하였습니다.
말씀을 통해 사명을 깨닫고, 주님의 뜻 가운데 살고자 결단하였습니다.
이웃들에게 열정적으로 복음을 전하였습니다.
이렇게 살면 당연히 우리의 삶은 승리와 찬양으로 가득해야 합니다.
그러나, 실상은 그렇지 않습니다.
여전히, 나의 부족한 모습에 낙심합니다.
여전히, 대적들이 나를 조롱하고 모욕합니다.
우리는 이런 현실에 적잖이 당황합니다.
왜냐하면, 내가 그리고 예상했던 모습과 다르기 때문입니다.
그리고 다시 기도의 자리로 나갑니다.
자신이 아무것도 아닌 것을 고백하며 나아갑니다.
주님, “저는 “nothing”입니다. 저를 도와주세요” 점점 더 낮아지고 겸손한 모습으로 성화되어 갑니다.
Content of the Psalm
1. Experience of Salvation (Verses 1–2)
The psalmist recalls how God saved him in the past.
He waited patiently and prayed persistently.
God heard David’s prayer.
“He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.” (Psalm 40:2, KJV)
2. Praising with a New Song (Verses 3–5)
The psalmist praises God with a new song for his salvation.
He sings with present joy and thanksgiving.
He gives glory to the wondrous works of the Lord.
“And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” (Psalm 40:3, KJV)
3. From New Song to Dedication (Verses 6–10)
1) “Mine ears hast thou opened” (v. 6, KJV)
This means the psalmist has come to hear the voice of God.
He once had closed ears, but now he listens.
He realized that sacrifices are not what God ultimately desires.
“Burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.” (v. 6, KJV)
He learned that God delights more in obedience and trust.
2) “Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,” (v. 7, KJV)
The “volume of the book” refers to the Law (Pentateuch), the Word of God given to His people.
Through Scripture, the psalmist discovered his calling.
3) “I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.” (v. 8, KJV)
God’s will has become his joy, and His law is now written in his heart.
“I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.” (v. 9, KJV)
4) “I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.” (v. 10, KJV)
He cannot keep the grace of salvation to himself.
He proclaims God's mercy and truth in the midst of the community.
4. Present Reality (Verses 11–15)
“Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.” (v. 11, KJV)
The psalmist is surrounded by troubles without number.
1) Internal Struggles
“For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.” (v. 12, KJV)
2) External Struggles
“Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.” (v. 14, KJV)
“Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.” (v. 15, KJV)
5. Returning to Prayer Again (Verses 16–17)
Even though he once sang a new song, and preached in the congregation,
he finds himself again in need of God’s help.
“But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.” (v. 17, KJV)
To say “I am poor and needy” is to confess: “I am nothing.”
6. Psalm 40 truly reflects the journey of our faith today.
We were once proud and did not know God.
But through various trials, He humbled us and led us to the Rock—Jesus Christ.
We sang a new song of praise.
We discovered our calling through His Word and chose to walk in His will.
We shared the gospel with passion.
Surely, then, our lives should be full of praise and victory.
Yet in reality, that is often not the case.
We still struggle with our own shortcomings.
Our enemies still mock us.
And we find ourselves confused—because life does not go as we expected.
So once again, we return to the place of prayer.
We confess that we are nothing.
“Lord, I am nothing. Please help me.”
And thus, we grow in sanctification—becoming more humble, more broken, more like Christ.
