시의 배경

시편 34편의 시인은 악의 문제를 가지고 고민하는 한 의인의 모습으로 등장하였습니다.

시편 37편에서 시인은 악인 때문에 분노하는 젊은이를 타이르는 지혜자의 모습으로 등장하고 있습니다.

여기에서 시인은 나이가 지긋하고 인생 경험이 풍부한 지혜자로 나타나며 자신의 의에 도취하여 자신을 ‘의의 화신으로 생각하고 악인의 악을 뿌리째 뽑으려는 젊은이”을 타이르고 있습니다.

1~9절에서 악인을 투기하지 말고 주님을 의지하라고 가르칩니다.

오늘은 특별히, “신뢰하라”, “기뻐하라”, “주께 맡기라”, 그리고 “안식하고 끈기 있게 기다리라”는 네 가지 동사에 집중해서 주신 말씀의 의미를 묵상하고 은혜 받고자 합니다.

 

시의 내용

 

세상을 향할 때의 초조함과 부러움

 

“(다윗의 시) 너는 악을 행하는 자들로 인하여 초조해하지 말며 불법을 행하는 자들을 부러워하지 말라.”

 

“악”을 행하는 자들

본성에 내재된 죄성이 행동으로 표출되는 것을 의미합니다.

“불법”을 행하는 자들

하나님의 법을 어기고, 하나님의 뜻과 무관한 삶을 사는 것을 의미합니다.

“초조해하지 말며”

“초조해하다”는 “불타다”, “화를 내다”, “격분하다”, “속이 타다"의 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 즉, 남이 잘되는 것을 보며 마음이 불안하고 시기심이 생겨 속이 타는 것을 의미합니다.

“부러워하지 말며”

 

하나님을 신뢰할 때의 안식

 

{주}를 신뢰하고 선을 행하라. 그리하면 네가 땅에 거하고 참으로 양식을 먹으리로다.

“신뢰하고”

“신뢰하다”는 강한 바위 위에 서 있는 것을 의미합니다.

하나님을 반석으로 삼고, 그 위에서 흔들리지 않는 신뢰의 삶을 살아가라고 명령하고 있습니다.

“땅에 거하고”

땅은 하나님의 축복을 의미합니다.

시편 37편 전체를 보면, "땅"은 단순한 물리적 땅을 넘어, 하나님의 백성이 차지할 축복과 안식의 영역을 의미합니다.

“참으로 양식을 먹으리로다”

"양식을 먹는다"는 육적인 필요뿐만 아니라, 하나님이 주시는 안정과 풍성한 공급을 의미합니다.
"참으로"

불확실한 것이 아니라, 확실한 하나님의 신실한 공급을 의미합니다.
 

“너는 또 {주}를 기뻐하라. 그분께서 네 마음에서 소원한 것들을 네게 주시리라.”

하나님을 신뢰하는 자는 하나님께 깊은 영적인 교제 안에 거합니다.

하나님과의 영적인 교제는 살에 기쁨과 활력을 줍니다.

하나님과의 깊은 교제 속에서 하나님의 뜻을 알고, 자신의 삶을 조정하고 교정해 나갑니다.

이제는 하나님의 뜻과 자신의 뜻이 일치됩니다.

이 때에 하나님의 “마음의 소원”을 들어주십니다.

이 구절은 기복신앙으로 오해해서는 안 됩니다.

 

“네 길을 {주}께 맡기고 또 그분을 신뢰하라. 그분께서 그것을 이루시고”

하나님을 신뢰하는 자는 자신의 삶의 행로를 맡길 수 있습니다.

“맡기다”는 돌을 굴러 보낸다는 의미입니다.

자신의 염려, 두려움, 불안 등을 마치 돌을 굴러 멀리 보내듯이 보낸다는 의미입니다.

하나님의 신뢰하고, 그 분의 뜻을 알았다면, 이제 인생의 길을 맡길 수 있습니다.

그러나 여전히 불안한 마음, 불확실한 미래에 두려움은 남아 있습니다.

그러나 그런 마음들과 싸워 이겨야 합니다.

왜냐하면 하나님께서는 살아 계셔서 우리에게 뜻을 분명히 이루실 것이기 때문입니다.

 

“{주} 안에서 안식하고 끈기 있게 그분을 기다리라. 자기 길에서 형통한 자나 사악한 꾀를 이루는 자로 인하여 초조해하지 말지어다.”

“안식하고”

"안식하다"의 의미는 ‘조용하다’, 침묵하다, ‘가만히 있다’, ‘동요하지 않고 잠잠히 머물다’의 의미입니다.

자신의 걱정과 두려움을 내려놓고 하나님의 주권을 인정하는 상태입니다.

“끈기 있게 기다리라”

하나님께서 반드시 선하게 이루실 것을 믿고 포기하지 않는 태도,

기다림 속에서도 믿음으로 소망을 품고 있는 상태,

단순한 수동적인 기다림이 아니라, 하나님의 계획을 신뢰하는 적극적인 기대감,

즉, "끈기 있게 기다리는 것"은 하나님을 신뢰하는 믿음에서 나오는 인내와 소망을 의미합니다!

 

Background of the Psalm

In Psalm 34, the psalmist appears as a righteous man struggling with the problem of evil.
In Psalm 37, however, the psalmist takes on the role of a wise man who admonishes a young person angered by the wicked.

Here, the psalmist, now aged and rich in life experience, appears as a wise elder who rebukes a young man "intoxicated by his own righteousness," believing himself to be an embodiment of justice and seeking to eradicate the wicked completely.

In verses 1–9, the psalmist teaches not to envy the wicked but to trust in the Lord.

Today, we will particularly focus on four imperative verbs: "Trust," "Delight," "Commit," and "Rest and Wait Patiently", meditating on their meanings and receiving grace from God's Word.

Content of the Psalm

Restlessness and Envy Toward the World

"(A Psalm of David.) Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity." (Psalm 37:1, KJV)

• "Evildoers"
  • Refers to those whose innate sinful nature manifests in their actions.
• "Workers of iniquity"
  • Describes those who break God’s law and live without regard for His will.
• "Fret not thyself"
  • The Hebrew word for fret means "to burn, to be furious, to be distressed, to be consumed with anxiety."
  • This implies a heart that is unsettled and consumed with envy when witnessing the prosperity of others.
• "Neither be thou envious"

Rest Found in Trusting God

"Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed." (Psalm 37:3, KJV)

• "Trust"
  • The word "trust" conveys the idea of standing firmly on a strong rock.
  • It is a command to live a life of unshakable trust in God, who is our Rock.
• "Dwell in the land"
  • The "land" symbolizes God's blessing.
  • Throughout Psalm 37, "land" represents not merely a physical territory but the realm of blessing and rest that God has promised to His people.
• "Verily thou shalt be fed"
  • "Being fed" signifies not only the fulfillment of physical needs but also the provision of security and abundance from God.
• "Verily"
  • Indicates certainty—God's faithful provision is not uncertain but absolutely sure.

"Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." (Psalm 37:4, KJV)

• Those who trust in God abide in deep spiritual fellowship with Him.
• This intimate relationship with God brings joy and vitality to the soul.
• As believers walk in close communion with Him, they come to understand His will and align their lives accordingly.
• Eventually, their will aligns with God's will.
• It is at this point that God grants the "desires of thine heart."
• This verse must not be misinterpreted as promoting a prosperity-based faith.

"Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." (Psalm 37:5, KJV)

• Those who trust in God can commit their life’s path to Him.
• "Commit" literally means "to roll away a stone."
  • This signifies casting our worries, fears, and uncertainties away, just as one rolls a stone far from themselves.
• When we trust in God and understand His will, we can entrust our life’s direction to Him.
• However, fears and uncertainties about the future often linger.
• Yet, we must fight and overcome these doubts.
• This is because God is living and will surely fulfill His purpose for us.

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass." (Psalm 37:7, KJV)

• "Rest in the Lord"
  • The meaning of rest includes "to be silent," "to remain still," "to stay calm," and "to be undisturbed."
  • It describes a state of surrendering worries and fears, acknowledging God's sovereignty.
• "Wait patiently"
  • Believing that God will surely accomplish His good purpose without giving up.
  • Maintaining faith and hope even in the waiting.
  • This is not passive waiting but an active expectation rooted in trust in God's plan.
  • In other words, "waiting patiently" is an expression of faith that perseveres with endurance and hope!
