(1) 다윗의 고난과 절망 (4-13절)

(1) David’s Suffering and Despair (vv. 4-13)
a. The Attacks and Traps of His Enemies
David describes the secret plots and traps laid against him by his enemies:
"Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me" (31:4). His enemies' attacks were covert, adding to his distress, leaving him feeling cornered and helpless.
b. Severe Mental and Physical Affliction
David paints a picture of exhaustion and despair:
"For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing" (Psalm 31:10a). The constant sorrow drained him physically and emotionally.
"My strength faileth because of mine iniquity" (Psalm 31:10b). His physical and spiritual exhaustion, coupled with a sense of guilt or suffering from his sin, weighed him down.
c. Abandonment by Those Close to Him
David’s isolation deepens as even his closest companions turn away:
"I was a reproach among all mine enemies" (Psalm 31:11a). His enemies scorned him, and those around him abandoned him.
"They that did see me without fled from me" (Psalm 31:11c). His reputation had become so tarnished that even those who once knew him avoided him.
"I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel" (Psalm 31:12). The broken vessel metaphor highlights his feelings of being discarded, no longer useful, and forsaken.
d. Accusations and Conspiracies from Many
David was surrounded by slander and betrayal:
"For I have heard the slander of many" (Psalm 31:13a). The false accusations and rumors spread by his enemies intensified his anguish.
"They took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life" (Psalm 31:13b). The conspiracies against him revealed the depth of the threat he faced.
2. "Nevertheless, when I cried out to Thee" (Psalm 31:22b)
Despite the overwhelming sense of abandonment, David turns to God in prayer. His cry reveals a shift in perspective, realizing that God has not abandoned him.
"Thou heardest the voice of my supplications" (Psalm 31:22c). David acknowledges that God heard his cries, reaffirming God's presence and attentiveness despite his earlier feelings of separation.
"The LORD preserveth the faithful" (Psalm 31:24). David affirms that God’s faithfulness never wavers, and He guards the faithful even in the darkest of times.
"Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD" (Psalm 31:25). David encourages others, sharing the lesson that hope in the Lord brings strength to the heart. Despite feeling forsaken, those who place their trust in God will find His strength and support.
In this psalm, David's journey from feeling "cut off" from God to recognizing God's faithfulness mirrors the believer's experience in times of suffering and despair. Even when it seems as though God is distant, the psalm reminds us that He hears our cries, remains faithful, and preserves us. The key is turning to God in prayer and trusting that He will strengthen us, even in our darkest moments.
