내 평생에 선하심과 긍휼이 정녕 나를 따르리니 내가 {주}의 집에 영원히 거하리로다.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
“Surely” 단어는 다윗은 ‘확신’ 혹은 ‘보증’을 표현하는 단어입니다.
“선한심”, “goodness”는 목자이신 하나님께서 그에게 베푸신 선하신을 표현합니다.
시편 23편에서 목자가 양떼들에게 베푼 선한 것들이 잘 표현되어 있습니다.
보호자라서 목자는 양떼들에게 푸른 초장, 잔잔한 물가로 인도했습니다.
인도자라서 목자는 양떼들을 의의 길로 인도했습니다.
때로는 징계의 지팡이로 양떼들을 의의 길로 인도했습니다.
그리고, 마침내 양떼들에게 산의 높은 곳에 위치한 평지로 인도했습니다.
이는 다윗의 목자의 경험이 반영되었습니다.
하나님은 목자와 같이 다윗의 삶을 인도했습니다.
때론, 위험에서 보호자로, 때로는 잘못했을 때 의의 길로 인도해 주셨습니다.
그리고, 마침내 하나님께서 그에게 왕이 되게 하셨습니다.
이런 그의 삶의 사건들을 종합해 볼 때, 하나님은 참으로 목자와 같이 자신의 삶을 인도해 주셨음을 깨닫을 수 있었습니다.
하나님의 사랑과 보호를 확신하고 신뢰할 수 있었습니다.
“긍휼”는 “헤세드”입니다.
하나님과 언약적 관계 속에서 오는 긍휼, 사랑 혹은 친절입니다.
이는 은혜입니다.
양은 때로는 길을 잃기도 하고, 사나운 맹수들의 표적이 되기도 합니다.
스스로는 여름 목초지로 갈 수 없습니다.
그러나, 목자는 그의 사명을 다합니다.
양떼들이 여름 목초지로 스스로 간 것이 아니라 목자의 은혜로 간 것입니다.
“따르리니”라는 표현은 ‘따라잡다’란 표현입니다.
사람이나 사물을 목표로 해서 추적하는 것을 의미합니다.
결코 놓치거나 실패하지 않고 계속해서 따라가는 것을 의미합니다.
마찬가지로, 우리의 일생에서 우리의 공로는 없습니다.
우리의 삶의 여정을 뒤돌아볼 때, 우리는 고집하고, 떼쓰며, 반항하며 잘못된 길을 가려고 했습니다.
하나님의 은혜가 우리를 붙잡았습니다.
우리를 바른 길, 의의 길로 인도했습니다.
그리고, 시간이 흐른 뒤, 우리의 인생을 뒤돌아볼 때, 모든 것이 은혜였음을 깨닫게 됩니다.
다윗은 주의 집에 영원히 거하리라고 노래하고 있습니다.
다윗은 자신의 공로가 아님을 알기에 이렇게 노래할 수 있습니다.
만일, 나의 공로였다면 결코 이렇게 노래할 수 없습니다.
우리는 양과 같이 너무도 연약하고 약점이 많다는 것을 알기 때문입니다.
그러나, 하나님은 능력이 많으시고, 지혜가 한이 없고, 긍휼과 사랑이 넘쳐나는 분이십니다.
이 하나님을 깨닫고, 경험했을 때, 우리 또한 다윗과 같이 노래할 수 있습니다.
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." (Psalm 23:6, KJV)
The word "surely" expresses David's certainty or assurance. The word "goodness" signifies the kindness that God, as the Shepherd, has shown him. In Psalm 23, we see the many good things that the Shepherd provides for His flock. As a protector, the Shepherd leads His sheep to green pastures and still waters. As a guide, He leads the sheep along paths of righteousness. Sometimes, He uses the rod of discipline to keep them on the right path. And finally, He brings them to the high plains of the mountain, where rich pastures await.
This reflects David’s own experiences with his Shepherd. God guided David’s life as a shepherd would, protecting him in times of danger and leading him to the paths of righteousness even when he had gone astray. Ultimately, God raised David to the throne. Through the many events of his life, David recognized that God had truly led him as a Shepherd, and he trusted in God’s love and protection.
The word "mercy" translates the Hebrew "hesed," which is covenantal love—kindness or loyalty that comes from a relationship of promise with God. This is grace. Like sheep, we sometimes lose our way or become the target of wild animals. Sheep cannot reach summer pastures on their own, but the Shepherd fulfills His duty. It is not through their own strength that they reach the summer pastures; it is by the grace of the Shepherd. The expression "shall follow" suggests an active pursuit or tracking, meaning that goodness and mercy will not fail but will constantly follow us.
Likewise, there is no merit of our own in our lives. Looking back on our journey, we often see our own stubbornness, resistance, and the times we strayed from the path. God’s grace has held us, leading us back to the right way, the path of righteousness. In time, as we reflect on our lives, we come to realize that it was all grace.
David sings of dwelling in the house of the Lord forever. He can sing this because he knows it is not due to his own merit. If it depended on his own merit, he could never sing with such confidence. We are weak and full of flaws like sheep. But God is powerful, limitless in wisdom, and abounding in mercy and love. When we understand and experience this God, we too can sing as David did.
