“A Song of Ascents”위로 올라가는 노래
Psalm 121 is the second song of “15 songs of ascents.” 시편121편은 15편의 위로 올라가는 노래 중 2번째 시입니다.
These 15 songs are sung by the pilgrims or the worshippers when they were ascending the road to Jerusalem. 이 15편의 시들은 예루살렘을 향해 올라가는 순례자들 혹은 예배자들에 의해 불러졌습니다.
The Jews must go to Jerusalem to attend the Jewish festivals for three times every year. 유대인들은 매년 3회씩 유대인의 명절에 예루살렘에 가야 했습니다.
The festival are Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacle. 이 명절들은 유월절, 오순절, 그리고 초막절(장막절)입니다.
Jerusalem is located at an altitude of 800m above sea level. However, Jericho was at an altitude of 250m below sea level. 예루살렘은 해발 800m 위치한 도시고, 여리고는 해수면에서 250 아래에 있습니다.
Therefore, when the pilgrims travel from Jericho to Jerusalem, they say “ascent”. On the other hand, they say “descent” when they travel to Jericho. 그러므로 순례자들이 예루살렘으로 향해 갈 때, 그들은 올라간다고 말했고, 반대로 여리고로 갈 때는 내려간다고 말했습니다.
Answer Song (화답송)
In verses 1~2 of psalm 121, the 1st person pronoun “my” is used. 시편 121편의 1~2절은 1인칭 대명사가 사용되었습니다.
In verses 3~8, the pronoun is changed from the 1st person to the 2nd person, “thy” or “your". 3~8절에서는 1인칭 대명사가 2인칭 대명사 ‘너의’로 바뀝니다.
This means that this song is the answer song which was sung responsively by two groups of people. 이것이 의미하는 바는 이 노래가 두 그룹에 의해 화답의 형식으로 불러졌다는 것입니다.

What kind of help 어떤 종류의 도움
In the verses 1~2, the palmist uses the word, עֵזֶר (ezer), which means ‘help.1~2절에서는 시인은 “에젤”이라는 단어를 사용했는데, 이 의미는 도움입니다.
In the verses 3~8, שָׁמַר(shamar) is used for 6 times. 3~8절에서는 “샤말”이 6번 사용되었습니다.
It has the meaning, of ‘keep’, ‘preserve’, or ‘protect’. 이 단어의 의미는 “지키다”, “보존하다”, 혹은 “보호하다”입니다.
God helps us. 하나님은 우리를 도와주십니다.
Psalm 121 is about divine protection. 시편 121편은 신적인 보호입니다.
From psalm 121, we will learn three lessons. 시편 121편에서 우리는
세 가지 교훈을 배울 것입니다.
He helps us (1~2, 4) 그는 우리를 도우시는 분이시다.
He protects us (3, 5~7) 그는 우리를 보호하는 분이시다.
He always keeps us (8) 그는 우리를 항상 지키는 분이시다.

The Lord is my keeper. 주는 나를 지키시는 자
Firstly, He helps us (1~2, 4). 첫째로, 그는 우리를 도와주십니다.
Who is God? 하나님은 누구인가?
1. Creator who made heavens and earth, “Elohim.” 하늘들과 땅을 만드신 창조자, “엘로힘”
which made heaven and earth. (2b) 나의 도움이 하늘과 땅을 만드신(2b)
In the Genesis chapter 1 and verse 1, this name “Elohim” appears. 창세기 1장 1절에 “엘로힘”이라는 이름이 나옵니다.
Genesis chapter 1 teaches that God created heavens and earth with His infinite power and wisdom. 창세기 1장은 하나님께서 그의 무한한 능력과 지혜로 하늘들과 땅을 창조하셨음을 가르쳐줍니다.
Our God who helps us is the creator who is all powerful and wise. 우리를 돕는 하나님은 모든 능력과 지혜를 가진 창조주이십니다.
If our God wants to help us, nobody can stop Him from helping us. 우리의 하나님이 우리를 돕기 원하신다면, 그 어떤 것도 우리를 막지 못합니다.
God of the psalmist is the Creator who made heavens and earth. 시인의 하나님은 하늘들과 땅을 만드신 창조주이십니다.
This truth gives the psalmist great confidence in God. 이 진리가 시인에게 하나님 안에서 엄청난 자신감을 줍니다.
The psalmist trusted his God who is true and living God. 시인은 참이요 살아 계신 그의 하나님을 신뢰했습니다.
2. Covenantal Name “The Lord”, or “Yahweh” 언약의 이름 “주”, “야훼”
My help cometh from the LORD(2a) 나의 도움이 하늘과 땅을 만드신(2a)
The word “LORD” is capitalized. “주”는 대문자입니다.
It is to emphasize God’s covenant with His people. 이것은 그의 백성들과 언약을 맺은 사실을 강조하기 위함입니다.
In the psalm, the word “LORD” is used for 4 times (2,5,7,8) 시에서 “주”라는 단어가 4번 사용되고 있습니다.

The Lord who made covenant with His people is sovereign in the history of mankind. 그의 백성과 언약하신 주님은 인류의 역사에 주권적으로 개입하십니다.
The salvation of the Lord is extending to all from generation to generation. 주님의 구원은 모든 세대에 걸쳐 이루어지고 있습니다.
He is the covenant people. 그는 언약의 백성입니다.
So, he is convinced that the Lord will surely protect him. 그러므로, 그는 주님께서 그를 보호해 주실 것을 확신하고 있습니다.
Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.(4) 보라, 이스라엘을 지키시는 이는 졸지도 아니하시고 주무시지도 아니하시리로다.(4)
The Lord made covenant with Israel. 주님은 이스라엘과 언약을 맺으셨습니다.
The Lord will surely keep His people, Israel. 주님은 확신하게 그의 백성, 이스라엘을 도와주십니다.
The Lord who preserves His people, will neither be slumber nor sleep. 그 백성을 도우시는 주님은 졸지도 주무시지도 않으십니다.
Secondly, he protects us (3,5~7). 둘째로, 그는 우리를 보호하십니다.
1. From misfortune 불운으로부터
He will not suffer thy foot to be moved (3a) 그분께서 네 발이 흔들리지 아니하게 하시며 (3a)
The pilgrim had to ascend to the steep mountain road. 순례자들은 가파른 산길을 올라가야만 했습니다.
The Lord will not allow His people’s foot to be moved. 주님은 그의 백성들의 발이 움직이는 것을 허락하지 않습니다.
This verse teaches us the doctrine of divine providence. 이 구절은 우리에게 섭리의 교리에 대해 가르쳐 줍니다.
God has the total sovereignty over His creation. 하나님은 그의 창조물에 대해 완전한 주권을 가지고 있습니다.
There is nothing happen by chance because God is in control of all things. 하나님은 모든 것을 통제하고 있기 때문에 우연히 일어나는 것은 없습니다.
During the ascending misfortune may happen upon the pilgrim. 올라가는 동안 불운은 순례자들에게 일어날 수 있습니다.
The pilgrim may encounter life threatening robbers. 순례자들은 그들의 생명을 위협하는 강도들을 만날 수 있습니다.
It is just like the parable of a good Samaritan. 이는 선한 사마리아 비유와 같습니다.

God even takes care of sparrows. 하나님은 참새들조차 보호하십니다.
They will not fall on the ground without God’s permission. 그들은 하나님이 허락하지 않으시면 결코 땅에 떨어지지 않을 것입니다.
He will surely take care of us who are more precious than the sparrow. 주님은 참새보다도 더 귀중한 존재인 우리들을 반드시 보호해 주실 것입니다.
2. From distress 고통으로부터
The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. (6) 해가 낮에 너를 치지 못하며 달이 밤에 너를 치지 못하리로다. (6)
The meaning of the Hebrew word for “smite” is to kill, to destroy, or to defeat. “치다”의 히브리어 원어의 의미는 “치다”, “파괴하다”, 혹은 “패배시키다”입니다.
The strong sunlight in a day can kill a person. 낮 동안의 강한 햇살은 사람을 죽일 수 있습니다.
The low temperature at night may discourage them psychologically. 낮은 온도는 정신적으로 힘들게 할 수 있습니다.
The pilgrim has to overcome various distress physically and psychologically during the journey to Jerusalem. 순례자들은 여행 동안 육체적, 정시적으로 다양한 고통을 극복해야만 합니다.
Our God will keep them from these distresses. 우리 하나님은 이러한 고통으로부터 순례자들을 지켜 주십니다.
Sometimes, the pilgrim will experience emotion such as, fear, frustration, and discouragement. 때때로, 순례자들은 공포, 좌절, 낙심과 같은 감정들을 경험합니다.
Mental and physical pain can make us feel depressed and sad. 정신적 육체적 고통은 그들을 우울하게 하고 슬프게 합니다.
But our Lord will keep us. 그러나 우리 주님은 그들을 지켜 주십니다.
The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. (5b)

Our Lord will shade us. 우리 주님은 우리의 그늘이 되어 주십니다.
The word “shade” is translated as “defence” in Ecclesiastes 7:12. “그늘”이라는 단어는 전도서 7:12절에서는 “방벽”이라는 단어로 번역되었습니다.
“Shade” is basically a shelter. (Genesis 19:8) “그늘”은 기본적으로 파난처입니다. (창세기 18:8)
We can be protected under God’s shade. 우리는 하나님의 그늘 아래에서 보호받을 수 있습니다.
We can cry out to Him for help in the difficult situation. 우리는 어려운 상황에서 하나님께 부르짖으며 도움을 구할 수 있습니다.
We can trust in our God. 우리는 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.
3. From spiritual evilness 영적인 악함으로부터
The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. (7)
{주}께서 모든 악으로부터 너를 보존하시며 또 네 혼을 보존하시리로다. (7)
The Lord will keep or preserve us from all evil. 주님은 우리를 모든 악에서 보존해 주실 것입니다.
The clause “preserve thee from all evils” includes spiritual protection. 모든 악에서 구원해 주신다는 것은 영적인 보호를 포함합니다.
There are evils which will destroy God’s people. 하나님의 백성을 파괴시키려는 악들이 있습니다.
These evils are from the devil and the people who are under its influence. 이 악들은 마귀로부터 오는 것이며 사람들은 그의 영향 아래 있습니다.
1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

정신을 차리라. 깨어 있으라. 너희 대적 마귀가 울부짖는 사자같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니
The devil is seeking whom He may devour. 마귀는 삼킬 자는 찾고 있습니다.
We cannot stand against him without being sober and vigilant by constantly putting our trust in God and living a life that is holy. 우리는 정신을 차리고 깨어 있어 하나님을 계속적으로 신뢰하며 경건한 삶을 살 지 않으면 마귀를 대적할 수 없습니다.
The devil will always tempt and entice us to sin. 마귀를 항상 우리를 유혹하여 죄를 짓게 하려고 할 것입니다.
The Lord will keep us from this spiritual evilness. 주님은 영적인 악에서 우리를 지켜 주실 것입니다.
Lastly, He Always Keep Us (8). 마지막으로 그는 항상 우리를 지켜 주실 것입니다.
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. (8)
