하나님 앞에서

서론

요한삼서 12절입니다.

"데메드리오는 뭇 사람에게도, 진리에게도 증거를 받았으매 우리도 증거하노니 너는 우리의 증거가 참된 줄을 아느니라."

세 겹의 증언입니다.

• 첫째 — 뭇 사람의 증언입니다. 주변의 모든 사람이 데메드리오를 증언했습니다. 한두 사람이 아닙니다. 그를 아는 사람들이 한목소리로 말했습니다. 이 사람은 믿을 수 있다고.

• 둘째 — 요한의 증언입니다. 사도 요한이 직접 보증합니다. "우리도 증거하노니 너는 우리의 증거가 참된 줄을 아느니라." 요한의 이름을 걸고 한 말입니다. 가이오에게 이 사람을 신뢰하라고 직접 말하는 것입니다.

두 증언만으로도 충분합니다. 사람들의 증언에 사도의 보증까지 더해졌습니다.

그런데 요한이 가장 먼저 말한 것이 따로 있습니다. 뭇 사람의 증언도, 요한 자신의 증언도 아닙니다. 진리의 증언입니다.

진리가 그를 증언했습니다. 진리의 기준에 비추었을 때 그 삶이 일치했습니다. 사람이 볼 때와 안 볼 때가 다르지 않은 삶입니다. 누가 알아주든 알아주지 않든 동일한 삶입니다. 하나님 앞에서 산 삶입니다.

오늘 이 말씀이 우리에게 묻습니다. 지금 내 삶은 누구 앞에서 살고 있습니까.

포인트 1 — 진리가 증언한다 (12절)

요한이 12절에서 가장 먼저 말한 것은 진리의 증언입니다.

"진리에게도 증거를 받았으매"

— 그리스어로 ὑπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας αὐτῆς, 진리 자체로부터 증언을 받았다는 뜻입니다. 사람이 증언한 것이 아닙니다. 진리 자체가 그의 삶을 가리키며 말한 것입니다. 이 삶이 맞다고.

어떤 삶이 진리의 증언을 받습니까. 진리에 맞추어 산 삶입니다. 진리의 기준에 비추었을 때 그 삶이 일치하는 것입니다. 말할 때와 침묵할 때, 보이는 자리와 보이지 않는 자리, 인정받을 때와 인정받지 못할 때 — 동일한 삶입니다.

그것이 데메드리오였습니다. 진리가 그를 증언할 수 있었던 것은 — 그가 언제나 진리 앞에서 살았기 때문입니다.

데메드리오가 어떤 사람이었는지 우리는 알지 못합니다. 어느 도시에 살았는지, 어떤 직분을 가졌는지, 성경은 말하지 않습니다. 그러나 요한이 단 한 절로 그를 소개했다는 것 자체가 증언입니다. 진리의 증언을 받은 삶 — 그것으로 충분했습니다.

포인트 2 — 하나님 앞에서 산 삶 (창 39장)

그런데 그런 삶이 어떻게 가능합니까. 본문은 설명하지 않습니다. 그러나 성경에 그 삶을 살았던 사람이 있습니다.

요셉입니다.

창세기 39장입니다. 요셉은 보디발의 집에 있었습니다. 주인의 아내가 날마다 유혹했습니다. 아무도 보지 않는 자리였습니다. 그 자리에서 요셉이 말합니다.

"내가 어찌 이 큰 악을 행하여 하나님께 죄를 지으리이까."

주인을 의식한 것이 아닙니다. 사람의 눈을 의식한 것이 아닙니다. 하나님 앞에서 선 것입니다. 아무도 없는 그 자리에서 — 하나님이 보고 계신다는 것을 알았습니다.

그것이 코람 데오입니다. 하나님 앞에서 사는 삶입니다.

요셉은 그 자리에서 거절했습니다. 그리고 감옥에 갔습니다. 당장의 결과는 손해였습니다. 그러나 하나님은 기억하셨습니다. 아무도 보지 않는 그 자리에서 하나님 앞에 선 것을 — 하나님이 보고 계셨습니다.

데메드리오가 진리의 증언을 받은 것은 — 바로 이런 삶의 축적이었습니다. 사람이 없는 자리에서도, 인정받지 못하는 자리에서도 — 하나님 앞에서 동일하게 산 것입니다.

오늘 내가 아무도 보지 않는 자리에서 어떻게 삽니까. 그 자리가 내 진짜 삶입니다.

포인트 3 — 그 삶의 동력 (롬 2:29, 고전 4:5)

요셉은 감옥에 갔습니다. 그래도 동일했습니다. 데메드리오는 진리의 증언을 받았습니다. 무엇이 그 삶을 끝까지 지속하게 했습니까.

동력이 있어야 합니다.

사람의 시선 앞에서 사는 사람은 사람의 칭찬이 동력입니다. 그 칭찬이 없으면 멈춥니다. 그 삶은 언제나 불안합니다.

그런데 하나님 앞에서 사는 사람의 동력은 다릅니다.

로마서 2장 29절입니다.

"그 칭찬이 사람에게서가 아니요 다만 하나님에게서니라."

하나님의 칭찬입니다. 사람의 칭찬이 아닙니다. 하나님의 칭찬을 아는 사람은 — 사람이 알아주지 않아도 흔들리지 않습니다. 사람이 보지 않는 자리에서도 동일합니다. 그 칭찬의 출처가 사람이 아니기 때문입니다.

고린도전서 4장 5절입니다.

"그 때에 각 사람에게 하나님으로부터 칭찬이 있으리라."

그 때 — 주님이 오시는 날입니다. 그날 하나님으로부터 칭찬이 있을 것입니다. 데메드리오가 진리 앞에서 살 수 있었던 것은 — 그 칭찬을 알았기 때문입니다. 사람의 칭찬이 없는 자리에서도 하나님의 칭찬이 있다는 것을 알았기 때문입니다.

하나님 앞에서 사십시오. 그 칭찬이 사람에게서가 아니라 하나님에게서 옵니다.

결론

가이오처럼 문을 여는 삶도, 디오드레베처럼 으뜸이 되려는 욕심도 — 결국 여기서 갈립니다. 하나님 앞에서 사는가, 사람 앞에서 사는가입니다.

사람의 평가로 사는 사람은 사람에 따라 흔들립니다. 그러나 하나님 앞에서 사는 사람은 보이지 않는 자리에서도 동일합니다. 아무도 몰라도 무너지지 않습니다. 하나님이 보고 계시기 때문입니다.

데메드리오는 이름보다 삶이 먼저 증언한 사람이었습니다. 사람들이 그를 증언했고, 사도가 그를 증언했고, 무엇보다 진리가 그를 증언했습니다.

우리의 삶은 무엇이 증언하고 있습니까.

사람이 볼 때만 믿음의 사람이 아니라 — 하나님 앞에서도 동일한 사람, 인정받는 자리에서만 아니라 — 아무도 없는 자리에서도 동일한 사람, 그렇게 진리의 증언을 받는 삶이 되기를 바랍니다.

그리고 마지막 날, "그 칭찬이 사람에게서가 아니요 다만 하나님에게서니라." 그 말씀처럼 하나님께 칭찬받는 삶이 되기를 축복합니다.

 

Before God

Introduction

This is 3 John 12.

"Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true."

It is a threefold testimony.

• First — The testimony of all men. Everyone around Demetrius testified of him. Not just one or two people. Those who knew him spoke with one voice, saying that this man can be trusted.

• Second — The testimony of John. The Apostle John himself guarantees it. "Yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true." He says this staking his own name. He is directly telling Gaius to trust this man.

These two testimonies alone are enough. The testimony of the people is added to the apostle's guarantee.

Yet, there is something else that John mentions first. It is neither the testimony of all men nor John's own testimony. It is the testimony of the truth.

The truth testified of him. When examined by the standard of truth, his life aligned with it. His life was no different when people were watching and when they were not. Whether anyone recognized him or not, his life remained the same. It was a life lived before God.

Today, this word asks us: Before whom are you living your life right now?

Point 1 — The Truth Testifies (v. 12)

The first thing John mentions in verse 12 is the testimony of the truth.

"...and of the truth itself..."

— In Greek, ὑπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας αὐτῆς, meaning he received testimony from the truth itself. It is not man who testified. The truth itself pointed to his life and spoke, saying that this life is right.

What kind of life receives the testimony of the truth? A life lived in alignment with the truth. It is when one's life matches the standard of truth when examined by it. When speaking and when keeping silent, in visible places and in invisible places, when recognized and when not recognized — it is the exact same life.

That was Demetrius. The reason truth could testify of him was because — he always lived before the truth.

We do not know what kind of person Demetrius was. The Bible does not tell us which city he lived in or what position he held. However, the very fact that John introduces him in just a single verse is a testimony. A life that received the testimony of the truth — that was enough.

Point 2 — A Life Lived Before God (Gen. Chapter 39)

But how is such a life possible? The text does not explain. However, there is someone in the Bible who lived that life.

It is Joseph.

This is Genesis chapter 39. Joseph was in Potiphar's house. His master's wife tempted him day after day. It was a place where no one was watching. In that place, Joseph says:

"...how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"

He was not conscious of his master. He was not conscious of human eyes. He stood before God. In that place where no one else was — he knew that God was watching.

That is Coram Deo. It is a life lived before God.

Joseph refused in that place. And he went to prison. The immediate result was a loss. Yet, God remembered. Standing before God in that place where no one was watching — God was watching him.

The reason Demetrius received the testimony of the truth was — because of the accumulation of this kind of life. In places where no one was around, and in places where he was not recognized — he lived the same way before God.

How do you live today in places where no one is watching? That place is your real life.

Point 3 — The Driving Force of That Life (Rom. 2:29, 1 Cor. 4:5)

Joseph went to prison. Yet, he remained the same. Demetrius received the testimony of the truth. What allowed them to sustain that life until the end?

There must be a driving force.

For those who live before the eyes of men, the praise of man is their driving force. If that praise is gone, they stop. That life is always anxious.

However, the driving force of those who live before God is different.

This is Romans 2:29.

"...whose praise is not of men, but of God."

It is the praise of God. It is not the praise of man. Those who know the praise of God — do not shake even if people do not recognize them. They are the same even in places where people do not see. This is because the source of that praise is not man.

This is 1 Corinthians 4:5.

"...and then shall every man have praise of God."

At that time — it is the day the Lord comes. On that day, there will be praise from God. The reason Demetrius could live before the truth was — because he knew that praise. Because he knew that even in places where there is no praise of man, there is the praise of God.

Live before God. That praise comes not from man, but from God.

Conclusion

A life that opens the door like Gaius, and a desire to be foremost like Diotrephes — in the end, they divide here. Whether one lives before God, or before man.

Those who live by man's evaluation are shaken depending on people. However, those who live before God remain the same even in invisible places. Even if no one knows, they do not collapse. This is because God is watching.

Demetrius was a man whose life testified before his name did. People testified of him, the apostle testified of him, and above all, the truth testified of him.

What is testifying of our lives?

I pray that we become people who are not of faith only when people are watching — but are the same before God, and not only in places of recognition — but are the same even in places where no one is present, thereby receiving the testimony of the truth.

And on the final day, "...whose praise is not of men, but of God." Just like that word, I bless you to become a life praised by God.
