으뜸이 되려하면

 

서론

교회 안에 복음을 막는 사람이 있을 수 있습니까.

선교지의 반대자가 아닙니다. 이방인의 핍박이 아닙니다. 교회 안에서, 예배드리고, 직분을 가진 사람이 복음의 문을 닫을 수 있습니까.

오늘 본문은 그렇다고 말합니다.

요한삼서 9절에 디오드레베라는 사람이 등장합니다. 그는 교회 밖의 사람이 아니었습니다. 교회 안에서 으뜸이 되려 한 사람이었습니다. 그리고 그 욕심이 자라면서 — 말씀을 막았습니다. 사람을 막았습니다. 급기야 복음을 위해 문을 열려는 사람을 교회에서 내쫓았습니다.

출교를 명할 수 있을 만큼, 그는 이미 교회를 장악하고 있었습니다.

그래서 요한은 교회 앞으로 편지를 보내지 않았습니다. 디오드레베가 또 차단할 것이 분명했기 때문입니다. 대신 그 안에서 신뢰할 수 있는 한 사람 — 가이오를 찾아 직접 편지를 보냈습니다.

공동체가 병들었을 때, 하나님은 그 안에서 신뢰할 수 있는 한 사람을 찾으십니다. 그리고 동시에 — 병의 뿌리를 드러내십니다.

오늘 본문이 드러내는 것은 디오드레베만의 이야기가 아닙니다. 으뜸이 되려는 욕심이 우리 안에 있을 때 무슨 일이 일어나는지를 보여주는 거울입니다.

포인트 1 — 말씀을 막았다 (9절)

디오드레베가 가장 먼저 한 일이 있습니다. 말씀을 막은 것입니다.

9절입니다. "내가 두어 자를 교회에 썼으나 그들 중에 으뜸 되기를 좋아하는 디오드레베가 우리를 영접하지 아니하니." 요한이 교회에 편지를 보냈습니다. 그런데 그 편지가 교회에 닿지 못했습니다. 디오드레베가 차단했기 때문입니다.

왜 그랬습니까. 요한의 말이 교회에 들어오는 순간 — 요한의 권위가 자기 위에 서기 때문입니다. 으뜸이 되려는 사람은 자기보다 높은 권위를 용납하지 못합니다. 사도의 편지라도 예외가 없었습니다. 말씀을 막아야 자신이 첫째가 될 수 있었습니다. 그것이 바로 하나님의 말씀 위에 자기를 올려놓은 것입니다.

내가 듣기 싫은 말씀 앞에서 어떻게 반응합니까. 외면합니까. 자리를 피합니까. 디오드레베는 그것을 아예 교회 문 앞에서 막아선 사람입니다.

포인트 2 — 사람을 막았다 (10절)

말씀을 막은 다음에는 사람을 막았습니다.

10절입니다. "그가 악한 말로 우리를 비방하고도 오히려 부족하여 형제들을 영접하지도 아니하고 영접하고자 하는 자를 금하여 교회에서 내쫓는도다."

세 단계입니다.

첫째 — 악한 말로 비방했습니다. 요한과 연결된 사람들의 신뢰를 무너뜨렸습니다. 사람을 막기 전에 먼저 평판을 막은 것입니다.

둘째 — 형제들을 영접하지 않았습니다. 여기서 형제들은 앞선 메시지의 그 복음 전도자들입니다. 가이오가 문을 열어 영접했던 바로 그 사람들입니다. 디오드레베는 그들에게 문을 닫았습니다. 그 전도자들은 요한이 보낸 사람들이었기 때문입니다. 그들을 받아들이는 것은 요한의 권위를 인정하는 것이었습니다. 으뜸이 되려는 사람은 그것을 용납할 수 없었습니다.

셋째 — 영접하려는 자를 출교했습니다. 내부의 반대 목소리까지 제거했습니다. 한 사람의 욕심에 공동체 전체가 도구가 된 것입니다.

그런데 여기서 멈춰야 합니다. 이것을 "저런 리더가 문제다"로 읽으면 본문을 절반만 읽는 것입니다. 본문이 우리에게 묻는 것은 — 저 사람이 누구냐가 아닙니다. 내 안에 그 욕심이 있느냐입니다.

내 의견과 다른 사람을 은근히 배제한 적이 있습니까. 인정받지 못하다고 느낄 때 협력을 거둔 적이 있습니까. 규모의 차이가 있을 뿐, 방향은 같습니다.

결론

그런데 본문이 한 문장을 던집니다.

"그러므로 내가 가면(ἐὰν ἔλθω) 그가 행하는 일을 기억하리라(ὑ포μνήσω)."

ἐὰν ἔλθω — 단순한 가정이 아닙니다. 방문의 예고입니다. 경고입니다. ὑπομνήσω — 숨겨진 것을 공개적으로 드러낸다는 뜻입니다.

디오드레베는 말씀을 막고, 사람을 막고, 교회를 장악했습니다. 아무도 그를 막을 수 없는 것처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 요한은 기억했습니다. 그리고 오겠다고 했습니다.

요한보다 더 확실하게 오시는 분이 계십니다.

고린도전서 4장 5절입니다. "주께서 오시기까지 아무것도 판단하지 말라. 그가 어둠에 감추인 것들을 드러내고(φανερώσει) 마음의 뜻을 나타내시리니."

요한은 올 수도 있고 못 올 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 주님은 반드시 오십니다. 그분 앞에서는 아무리 단단한 권력도 숨길 수 없습니다.

 

If Anyone Desires to Be First

 

Introduction

Can there be someone inside the church who blocks the gospel?

It is not an opponent on the mission field. It is not the persecution of pagans. Can a person inside the church, who worships and holds an office, close the door to the gospel?

Today’s text says yes.

In 3 John verse 9, a man named Diotrephes appears. He was not an outsider to the church. He was a man who loved to have the preeminence within the church. And as that ambition grew—he blocked the Word. He blocked people. Ultimately, he cast out of the church those who wished to open their doors for the gospel.

He had already seized control of the church to such an extent that he could command excommunication.

Therefore, John did not send his letter to the church as a whole. For it was certain that Diotrephes would intercept it again. Instead, he found one trustworthy man within—Gaius—and sent the letter directly to him.

When a community falls ill, God looks for one trustworthy person inside it. And at the same time—He exposes the root of the disease.

What today’s text reveals is not merely the story of Diotrephes. It is a mirror that shows what happens when the desire to be first dwells within us.

Point 1 — He blocked the Word (v. 9)

There is something Diotrephes did above all else. He blocked the Word.

Look at verse 9.

"I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not." (3 John 1:9, KJV)

John wrote a letter to the church. Yet, that letter could not reach the church. It was because Diotrephes blocked it.

Why did he do this? Because the moment John’s words entered the church—John’s authority would stand above his own. A person who desires to be first cannot tolerate any authority higher than themselves. Even the letter of an apostle was no exception. He had to block the Word so that he could remain first. That is precisely what it means to place oneself above the Word of God.

How do you react when faced with a word you do not wish to hear? Do you turn away? Do you avoid the place? Diotrephes was a man who stood right at the very doors of the church to block it entirely.

Point 2 — He blocked people (v. 10)

After blocking the Word, he blocked people.

Look at verse 10.

"Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doest, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church." (3 John 1:10, KJV)

It is a three-step progression.

First—he defamed them with malicious words. He shattered the trust of those connected to John. Before blocking the person, he blocked their reputation first.

Second—he did not receive the brethren. The "brethren" here refers to those gospel evangelists mentioned in the previous message. They were the very people to whom Gaius had opened his doors to welcome. Diotrephes closed his doors to them. For those evangelists were men sent by John. To accept them was to recognize John's authority. A man who desires to be first could not tolerate that.

Third—he excommunicated those who wished to welcome them. He eliminated even the internal voices of opposition. An entire community became a tool for one man's ambition.

But we must pause here. If we read this simply as "that kind of leader is the problem," we are reading only half the text. What the text asks us is not—who that man is. It asks—does that ambition reside within me?

Have you ever subtly excluded someone who disagreed with your opinion? Have you ever withdrawn your cooperation when you felt unrecognized? Though the scale may differ, the direction is exactly the same.

Conclusion

Yet, the text hurls a single sentence at us.

"Wherefore, if I come (ἐὰν ἔλθω), I will remember (ὑπομνήσω) his deeds which he doest."

ἐὰν ἔλθω—this is not a mere conditional statement. It is a notice of arrival. It is a warning. ὑπομνήσω—it means to bring what is hidden out into the open, before everyone.

Diotrephes blocked the Word, blocked people, and seized control of the church. It seemed as though no one could stop him. But John remembered. And he said he would come.

There is One whose coming is far more certain than John's.

Consider 1 Corinthians chapter 4 verse 5.

"Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God." (1 Cor 4:5, KJV)

John might come, or he might not. But the Lord will surely come. Before Him, no power, no matter how unyielding, can be hidden.

I ask you honestly in this place today: Has there been a moment within you where you came before the gospel?

When ambition grows larger than the gospel—the Word is closed, people depart, and the community falls ill.

Before you stand before the One who comes, stand first before this Word today.
