맹세에 관한 올바른 태도

1. 맹세의 신중함

Whosoever taketh an oath

누구든지 맹세하는 사람은

ought duly to consider the weightiness of so solemn an act,

그 엄숙한 행위가 지닌 무게와 책임을 깊이 숙고해야 한다.

2. 진실에 대한 확신

and therein to avouch nothing but what he fully persuaded is the truth.

그리고 자신이 진리라고 확신하는 것 외에는 맹세해서는 안 된다.

3. 선하고 정당한 맹세

Neither may any man bind himself by oath to anything but what is good and just,

또한 선하고 정당한 것 이외의 것에 자신을 묶는 맹세를 해서는 안 된다.

4. 가능한 범위 안의 맹세

and what he believeth so to be, and what he is able and resolved to perform.

자신이 옳다고 믿고, 실제로 이행할 수 있으며, 실행할 결심이 선 것에 대해서만 맹세해야 한다.

5. 합법적 맹세 거부의 죄

Yet it is a sin to refuse an oath touching anything that is good and just, being imposed by lawful authority.

그러나 합법적 권위에 의해 선하고 정당한 일에 관한 맹세를 요구받았음에도 거부하는 것은 죄이다.
