We Cannot Merit Pardon or Eternal Life by Good Works / 선행으로 죄사함과 영원한 생명을 얻을 수 없습니다
We cannot, by our best works, merit pardon of sin or eternal life.
우리는 최선을 다한 선행으로도 죄 사함이나 영원한 생명을 얻을 수 없습니다.
Reasons Why We Cannot / 그 이유는 다음과 같습니다
1. Salvation Belongs to God Alone / 구원은 오직 하나님께 속한 것이기 때문입니다
Salvation is at the hand of God.
구원은 하나님의 손에 있습니다.
It is God who decides salvation, not us.
구원은 하나님이 결정하시는 것이지 우리가 결정할 수 없습니다.
Our efforts do not meet God's standard.
우리가 이만큼 했다고 해서 하나님의 기준에 맞춰지는 것이 아닙니다.
God’s standard is grace, not works.
하나님의 기준은 선행이 아니라 은혜입니다.
Therefore, salvation and good works have no basis in each other.
그러므로 구원과 선행은 아무런 관계가 없습니다.
2. We Cannot Perform Enough Good Works to Earn Salvation / 구원을 위해 필요한 선행의 양이나 수를 채울 수 없기 때문입니다
There is a great disproportion between our works and the glory to come.
우리의 선행과 장차 올 영광 사이에는 엄청난 불균형이 있습니다.
This disproportion means our good works are insufficient to balance the glory of salvation.
이 불균형은 우리의 선행이 구원의 영광과 균형을 맞추기에 턱없이 부족함을 의미합니다.
3. Salvation Is Possible Only When God Comes to Us / 구원은 하나님께서 우리에게 오실 때만 가능합니다
There is an infinite distance between us and God.
하나님과 우리 사이에는 무한한 거리가 있습니다.
Our good works neither profit us nor satisfy the debt of our sins.
우리의 선행은 우리에게 아무런 유익이 없으며 죄의 빚을 갚을 수도 없습니다.
We cannot reach God by our own efforts.
우리가 스스로 하나님께 갈 수 없습니다.
Only God can come to us because He is all-powerful.
하나님만이 무한한 능력으로 우리에게 오실 수 있습니다.
Trying to reach God by works is like attempting to walk across the Pacific Ocean.
선행으로 하나님께 가겠다는 것은 태평양을 걸어서 건너려는 것과 같습니다.
4. Good Works Are Our Duty, Not the Condition of Salvation / 선행은 의무이지 구원의 조건이 아닙니다
Even when we have done all we can, we have only done our duty and are unprofitable servants.
우리가 할 수 있는 모든 선행을 했다 해도, 그것은 단지 우리의 의무를 다한 것일 뿐이며 무익한 종에 불과합니다.
Good works are the duty of the saved, based on grace and done voluntarily.
선행은 구원받은 자의 의무이며, 은혜에 기초해 자발적으로 행하는 것입니다.
Our works cannot be the condition to claim salvation from God.
우리가 이만큼 선행을 했다고 해서 구원을 요구할 수 없습니다.
5. Good Works Are Possible Because of the Holy Spirit / 선행이 가능한 것은 성령님께서 역사하셨기 때문입니다
If good works are good, it is because they proceed from God’s Spirit.
선행이 하나님 보시기에 좋다면, 그것은 성령님으로부터 비롯된 것입니다.
The Spirit knows God's will and leads us continually.
성령님은 하나님의 뜻을 아시며 우리를 끊임없이 인도하십니다.
Therefore, our good works are by the Spirit’s power, not by our own strength.
그러므로 우리의 선행은 우리 힘이 아니라 성령의 능력으로 이루어집니다.
6. Only Pure Works Can Endure God’s Judgment / 순수한 선행만이 하나님의 심판을 통과할 수 있습니다
If good works are done by us alone, they are defiled and mixed with weakness and imperfection.
사람의 힘으로 행한 선행은 연약함과 불완전함이 섞여 더럽혀져 있습니다.
Such works cannot endure God’s severe judgment.
이런 불완전한 선행은 하나님의 엄한 심판을 견딜 수 없습니다.
We must recognize that all our works are stained by sin.
우리의 모든 선행은 죄로 인해 오염되어 있음을 인정해야 합니다.
No matter how many good works we do, sin distorts and corrupts them.
아무리 선행을 많이 해도 죄악이 우리의 선행을 왜곡하고 부패시킵니다.
God is not pleased with our works apart from His grace.
하나님은 은혜 없이 우리의 선행을 결코 기뻐하지 않으십니다.
We must humbly acknowledge that we cannot do any good work by ourselves.
우리는 스스로 어떤 선행도 할 수 없음을 겸손히 인정해야 합니다.
