시의 배경

시편 65편을 통해 ‘우리는 왜 예배 드리는가?’ 답을 찾을 수 있습니다.
시의 내용
1. 예배는 하나님을 만나는 자리이기 때문 (1–2절)
“찬양이 주를 기다리오며, 사람이 서원을 주께 이행하리이다.
오, 기도를 들으시는 주여, 모든 육체가 주께 나아오리이다.”
시편 65편의 서두는 예배의 본질을 분명하게 보여줍니다.
예배는 단순한 형식이 아닌, 하나님을 인격적으로 만나는 만남의 자리입니다.
찬양과 서원, 기도로 하나님께 나아가며 그분을 기다리는 마음—이것이 참된 예배입니다.
2. 예배는 죄로부터의 회복을 경험하는 자리이기 때문 (3절)
“불법들이 나를 이기오니, 주께서 우리의 범죄들을 깨끗이 없애시리이다.”
예배는 감정의 고양만이 아니라, 내면 깊은 곳에서의 정화와 회개가 일어나는 시간입니다.
하나님의 거룩하심 앞에 설 때, 우리는 자신의 연약함과 죄를 깨닫게 되고, 그 자리에서 용서받는 은혜를 경험합니다.
3. 예배는 하나님께서 우리를 ‘택하시고 이끄시는’ 은혜의 응답이기 때문 (4절)
“주께서 택하시고, 주께 가까이 오게 하사, 주의 뜰에 거하게 하는 사람은 복이 있나이다…”
예배는 인간의 결심으로 시작된 것이 아닙니다.
하나님께서 먼저 우리를 부르시고, 가까이 오게 하신 은혜의 결과입니다.
예배는 그 부르심에 대한 사랑과 감사의 응답입니다.
4. 예배는 하나님 나라의 권능을 바라보게 하기 때문 (5–8절)
“그분께서는 자신의 능력으로 산들을 굳게 세우시고, 권능으로 띠를 띠시며…”
예배는 시선을 ‘나’에서 온 우주와 역사를 다스리시는 하나님께로 향하게 합니다.
하나님은 바다의 소음도 잠재우시며, 땅끝까지 평강을 주십니다.
예배는 우리의 두려움과 불안을 넘어서,
하나님의 주권과 질서, 평강을 다시 보는 자리입니다.
5. 예배는 하나님의 실제적인 공급을 인정하고 찬양하는 자리이기 때문 (9–13절)
“주께서 주의 선하심으로 한 해를 관 씌우시니, 주의 길들은 기름을 떨어뜨리며…”
시편 65편은 자연의 회복, 땅의 윤택함, 풍성한 수확을 묘사하며,
이 모든 것이 하나님의 공급하심 때문임을 고백합니다.
우리 시대의 양식과 월급, 건강과 가정, 일상의 평안 역시 하나님의 은택입니다.
예배는 우리가 누리는 모든 것이 ‘당연한 것’이 아닌, 하나님의 선하신 은혜임을 재인식하는 순간입니다.
예배란 무엇인가?
예배는 단지 인간의 활동이 아니라, 하나님과의 만남, 회복, 응답, 확신, 감사의 여정입니다.
시편 65편은 그 모든 과정을 놀랍도록 아름답고 질서 있게 담아내며,
오늘날 우리에게도 동일하게 예배의 본질을 일깨워 줍니다.
Background of the Psalm
Psalm 65 richly reveals what worship is and why we should worship God.
This psalm contains a complete flow of worship: the preparation of the worshiper’s heart, repentance for sin, the calling and response to worship, and the praise of God's power and grace.
Through Psalm 65, we find the answer to the question: "Why do we worship?"
Content of the Psalm
1. Worship is the place where we meet God (verses 1–2)
"Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed.
O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come." (Psalm 65:1-2, KJV)
The beginning of Psalm 65 clearly reveals the essence of worship.
Worship is not mere ritual, but a place of personal encounter with God.
It is a true worship when we come to God with praise, vows, and prayer, waiting on Him with expectant hearts.
2. Worship is the place where we experience restoration from sin (verse 3)
"Iniquities prevail against me: as for our transgressions, thou shalt purge them away." (Psalm 65:3, KJV)
Worship is not just emotional excitement, but a time of deep cleansing and repentance. When we stand before God’s holiness, we recognize our weakness and sin, and there we experience the grace of forgiveness.
3. Worship is the response to God's grace in choosing and drawing us near (verse 4)
"Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple." (Psalm 65:4, KJV)
Worship does not start with human will alone.
God first calls us and draws us near.
Worship is the loving and thankful response to that calling.
4. Worship directs our gaze toward the power of God's kingdom (verses 5–8)
"By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea:
Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power:
Which stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.
They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice." (Psalm 65:5-8, KJV)
Worship turns our focus from ourselves to the God who governs the universe and history.
God silences the roaring seas and grants peace even to the ends of the earth.
Worship is where we overcome fear and anxiety, seeing once again God's sovereignty, order, and peace.
5. Worship is the place where we acknowledge and praise God's actual provision (verses 9–13)
"Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it.
Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with showers: thou blessest the springing thereof.
Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.
They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side.
The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing." (Psalm 65:9-13, KJV)
Psalm 65 depicts the restoration of nature, the fertility of the land, and the abundance of harvest, all as the result of God's provision.
In our time, daily bread, salaries, health, family, and peace in life are all God's blessings.
Worship is the moment when we re-recognize that all we enjoy is not 'automatic' but a gracious gift from God.
What is worship?
Worship is not merely a human activity but a journey of encountering God, restoration, response, assurance, and gratitude.
Psalm 65 beautifully and orderly presents this whole process, and it awakens us today to the true essence of worship.
