Background of the Psalm
This psalm pairs with Psalm 20. In Psalm 20, the people and the king call upon God for victory as they prepare for battle. In Psalm 21, the king praises and thanks God for the victory He has granted. This psalm is divided into two parts. The first part rejoices in the strength of the Lord, and the second part expresses confidence in trusting God.
Content of the Psalm
Joy in the Lord's Strength
In verse 1, David sings, “The king shall joy in thy strength, O LORD” (Psalm 21:1). Again, in verse 13, he declares, “Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power” (Psalm 21:13). The psalm begins and ends with rejoicing and praising God's power. David expresses his joy in God’s strength and confidence in the future because of what God has done.
Why does David rejoice in the strength of the Lord? First, because God has granted him the desire of his heart (Psalm 21:2). Second, because God has not withheld the request of his lips (Psalm 21:2b). Third, God has blessed him with good things (Psalm 21:3). Finally, God has set him on the throne as king and extended his life (Psalm 21:4).
Confidence in the Lord's Mercy
David’s joy leads to a deep confidence in God. He declares, “For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved” (Psalm 21:7). Despite his human limitations, David knows that, because of God's mercy, he will not be shaken. His confidence comes not from his own abilities, but from trusting in God's steadfast mercy. He is assured of victory because he relies on the Lord.
The Desires of Our Hearts
We, too, have desires of the heart, just as David did. Some of us may be praying for the healing of a sick family member, while others may be crying out to God for deliverance from financial hardship. These heartfelt prayers are significant. Just as David experienced God fulfilling the desires of his heart (Psalm 21:2), we also need to experience God's power in our lives. We must encounter the God who does not turn away our prayers and who blesses our lives with good things. We must learn to rejoice in this God, who hears and answers our prayers.
Trusting in God’s Mercy
Just as David gained confidence in God's mercy, so must we trust in the Lord. Our lives are often filled with uncertainty, fear, and limitations, but David shows us that, in God's mercy, we can remain unshaken. Rather than relying on our own strength, we should trust in the One who is faithful and full of mercy. Victory is certain for those who place their trust in God.
The Need for Psalm 20
However, before experiencing the confidence of Psalm 21, we need the mindset of Psalm 20. In Psalm 20, the people of Israel, facing battle, call upon the Lord for victory despite their fears.
